Do all roads lead to Wardle?
« on: March 25, 2014, 04:47:44 PM »
I'm getting this sinking feeling that Wardle will be the next MU coach—despite all the cryptic posts from Goose and Keefe.

I can see the BoT... in their usual clumsy, ham-handed way...thinking that hiring Wardle will solve everything because he's part of the MU family. Why hire a coach who may skip town after six years when you can bring in a lifer who won't be going anywhere?

One problem: those other coaches skipped town because they were successful and other schools wanted them. Don't think that will be an issue with Wardle.

I would rather see Rob Frozena hired over Brian Wardle.

I wonder what we Scoopers (myself included) would have said if we hired some eccentric guy whose record got worse in each of his seven seasons at a tiny college, capped by 7-21 and 6-18 his last two years.

Then I wonder what we would have said as we watched him go 8-18 and 14-12 in his first two seasons at Marquette.

At this point I'm just glad I resisted the urge to text all my friends who made fun of me when Buzz left to take less money at an ACC bottom feeder.  I was so ready to rub it in their face 24 hours ago that we forced out Buzz because we knew we had Shaka, made a huge upgrade, blah blah blah.

This is stupid, but so is refreshing scoop for 24 hrs, so I'll play along. The rational of someone staying forever is flawed. Let's say Wardle is good enough over ten years not to get fired. That would mean at some point in time he would be good enough to get hired by a program that could be viewed as better (bigger conf etc).  We are no stepping stone and no blue blood we are marquette.

Hope the BoT realizes Wardle will always be there and there is no need to jump on his potential.  But yes I've thought about this all day.  It'd better be Howland if it's not Shaka.  Especially since he wants to come here.  Don't you think the other big east schools are in Marquette's ear telling them they'd better make an impact hire?

No, but potential candidates are dropping off the list. Smart is staying at VCU...Howland supposedly removed his name from consideration...Miller is staying at Dayton...and Masiello is moving to USF. Also, we hear that MU has no interest in Gregg Marshall.

I hope I'm wrong. But I can see MU serving up Wardle as a member of the family...a coach who won't be leaving at the first opportunity. I'm sure this is a big point with many on the BoT.

While Shaka is the sexier hire, Howland gives us just as good of a chance at a FF, IMO.  I just hope he didn't get turned off by all this.

Trying to mentally prepare myself for a Wardle/Kolczyk (sp? Toledo coach) hire.

If MU has no interest in Marshall, who just won the Coach of the Year Award, and do hire Wardle, then something is very, very wrong.  What would be worse than Hiroshima?

I assume Cords is working on this, but does he have real power? Or do some on the BoT see him as a temp who's keeping the seat warm until a permanent hire is made?

Earlier today, Jeff Goodman was asked about the MU coaching situation. His thoughts: Smart ain't coming. The three names he mentioned are Howland, Hopkins from Syracuse, and...wait for it...Wardle.

Since MU has never hired a head coach with previous head coaching experience in anything but a low-major, you can pretty much bank on Wardle being hired

FYI - Chew is already gone...and no...you don't go get Wardle to get it over with...he'll be waiting in the wings till the end of April...because:  A) He's an MU alum and would love the job.  B) NO other schools are pursuing him...which leads to C) Exactly why he is not the right answer for MU at this time - we are far beyond needing to take a coach who hasn't even made an NCAA tournament...and/or doesn't have a ton of recruiting chops/prowess/connections.

You don't always need "substantial reports" here inna forum. You need common sense and reasonable deduction.

There is nothing wrong with speculation and opinion on Brian Wardle.

That is a good choice. I don't need that to be reported to me from somewhere else to substantiate it for me. Go to Twitter for that.

Now move. Leave me alone and let me go and take down my Shaka avatar... or I could leave it up until I get 'substantial reports" that it is official that he is not coming.

Nice guy for the future. We would lose every recruit signed and most of current players. Has he had terrific recruits?  I just don't see this. Not saying it won't be done but not seeing any benefit to Marquette other than saving money.

If he hadn't gone to MU, no one on this board with his resume would have him on the list.  Let him grow some more, his next stop should not be at MU, anymore than Tod Kolwacyk's was.

Not saying it will happen—and praying it doesn't.

But I can see some members of the BoT saying..."Gee, why must we go through this every six years? Let's go out and get someone from the MU family. Someone who will be here forever. He'll be our Boeheim or Coach K."

I'd dial back the attitude. This morning, ESPN's Jeff Goodman—someone totally in touch with college hoops—stated the three names being associated with MU are Howland, Hopkins from Syracuse, and Wardle.

See CBB's post at the top.  If he hadn't played at MU, no one, including Goodman would be mentioning his name with this job

Really? I thought Wardle was in contact with MU. Was told he met Cords. I'm sure he's not at the top of the list but someone they're "looking at". Maybe out of respect.

Goodman adding Wardle to the mix is a jab at MU. He will be last guy to give MU benefit of the doubt. He is in Buzz's pocket and has been for awhile. Aside from VCU fans no one wants Shaka to pass more than Buzz. Goodman is spinning for Buzz.

Who in the hell started this subject. Here is our chance to get our program back in the ELITE. We depend

on basketball. We have to have a big name. Otherwise have Willie Warrior as our coach.
