Full update on Davante, from the horse's mouth
« on: March 02, 2012, 04:25:06 PM »
I know the Twitter update was posted, but here is Buzz's full response.

What are the odds Davante can play tomorrow?

Buzz Williams: "Slim. He’s progressing. He practiced for 22 minutes yesterday when it wasn’t live. We’ll see if he can get to 25 minutes, with three minutes of it live. I’d like to be able to play him at some point, only when he’s healthy and when he’s confident in his health, and only when our team is confident that he can contribute to us winning.

I’ve never seen, in my career, a team that wins 12 out of 13 games, and every single game there is something said about an injured player. I’ve never seen that. And normally guys get hurt and everybody says, ‘Wait until they get back.’ We lost our guys and, percentage wise, won better.

And everybody’s still talking and tweeting, and guys I don’t even know saying stuff that it’s coming from me, and I’m probably too open and honest in my conversations with the media. I haven’t tried to dodge any of it. If I knew the answer to when he would play, I would say that. I don’t.

He’s progressing. I would like for him to get to the point where he can help us, but only to the point that he can help us win, will he play? Will he be able to play tomorrow? I think that depends on how he feels today after practicing for 22 minutes yesterday. How will he feel in the morning after he practices however long he can practice today? It’s not hide and go seek. If he can help us, he’ll play. If he can’t, he won’t."

...please note the third paragraph...

Sounds promising to me, like DG may say "I feel great, I be playin', doh."  And then we may see him in tomorrow's game for a couple minutes.

Buzz is really a beauty....lol

He says slim chance that he will play and then says it depends on how he feels tomorrow.

Ok Buzz...we get it....you don't want to talk about it and you aren't going to tip your hand.......

there is link to the podcast there under the title "williams podcast"

He goes on to mention stuff about Davante being in good enough shape and the number of possessions he could theoretically play.

I like how Buzz is surprised when people are asking if Davante's ready.

All due respect to Buzz, when you are cryptic in your responses on someone playing, there are going to be a lot of rumors and questions.  It is kind of like the financial markets, if you tell them bad news, they react and its over.  Same thing with good news.  However, when the market is ensure of the news, look out.

I am not saying Buzz should divulge anything.  I am just saying he shouldn't be surprised with all of the questioning when there are non-definitive answers.

Here's his quote on how many minutes/possessions Davante could play when he comes back.

Will he be limited?

"Yes, I don’t think any player, particularly one that’s heavy in nature, can go from non-activity for six weeks and then play in a game where the possessions are so monumental. Not that Davante doesn’t understand what’s going on. You guys know he has a great pace to how he plays, but I don’t know that cardiovascular-wise, he could play more than four of five possessions. His adrenaline would maybe get him to six or seven, but that would probably be it."

It doesn't matter, either way BD will be right, he said he's 99% sure...still leaves 1% to keep his 100% correct information in tact.

Hopefully, they didn't leave it in Cincinnati.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

How many times does Buzz have to say that he doesn't know when he will be ready to contribute?  Why must you always believe that there is a hidden agenda.  Buzz has been consistent with his comments about Bardner throughout.  That is more than I can say about most posters on this site.

Willis Reed-like.

(Ed. note:  Slightly hyperbolic)

But it sure was nice having a guy grab some offensive rebounds, score on putbacks, and another big body to throw out there against Georgetown.  ELATED that he's back.

Guessing Buzz didn't want Georgetown to have a clue Davante would play.  That way the game plan totally changes mid-game.

I was surprised to see him play based upon the limp. Hope he feels good enough to play next week.

Don't know if Buzz reads the board, but plenty of people in the basketball department read boards. People who talk to Buzz.

I was surprised to see him play after Andy Katz said he was out for the regular season.

He might have played BECAUSE Andy Katz said he was out for the season.
