Do you have a Corvette, Porsche, Miata, or slammed civic with an old skateboard posing as a spoiler or some other car that you like to take on twisty back roads?
If you do, the growl, purr, or tin sounding reverberation of a coffee can exhaust is probably music to your ears. But what about those times when you want to drop the top, open the windows, or remove the plastic taped over the broken window and crank the stereo to some true driving music? The kind of music that doesn’t work on the long straightaways of the interstate, but really gets your blood flowing as you get on the gas while exiting a sweeping curve.
For those times, what songs really get you going? The kind of music that helps to hype up the driving experience and helps you lose yourself in the moment of man (or woman) and machine?
I’m looking to build an ultimate driving playlist for a long drive through the kettle moraine. Unfortunately, I’m not the best at remembering song titles and artists. Thus, I need help!
What songs do you think are great for a long day of “spirited” driving through the twisty back roads?
-
Zamfir, master of the pan flute. There is no other correct answer.
-
Off the top of my head...
"Sweet Emotion" - Aerosmith
"Radar Love" - Golding Earring
"Rock and Roll Aint Noise Pollution" - AC/DC
"Gimme Shelter" - Rolling Stones
-
Steppenwolf all the way
-
When it comes down to start making out, whenever possible, put on side one of Led Zeppelin IV.
-
We have a Miata, and I have a playlist that consists mostly of classic rock anthems. When I get home, I can post the complete list, but here are a few to get you started:
Crazy Train by Ozzy Osbourne
Frankenstein by Edgar Winter Group
Low Rider by ZZ Top
Ain't Talking 'Bout Love by Van Halen
Hocus Pocus by Focus (my personal favorite)
-
Bob Seger's greatest hits is a great album for a first windows down in the spring on back roads drive.
-
Off the top of my head...
"Sweet Emotion" - Aerosmith
"Radar Love" - Golding Earring
"Rock and Roll Aint Noise Pollution" - AC/DC
"Gimme Shelter" - Rolling Stones
Radar Love was my absolute first choice.

Low Rider (never heard a ZZ Top version if there is one) was by War..
-
Low Rider (never heard a ZZ Top version if there is one) was by War..
But if you're gonna do ZZ Top I'd go "Cheap Sunglasses"
-
Low Rider (never heard a ZZ Top version if there is one) was by War..
You are right.
Go with "Poke Salad Annie"
-
Radar Love was the first song that occurred to me. Then Life in the Fast Lane. Bullet with Butterfly Wings. (Smashing Pumpkins) Boys of Summer.
I usually throw on CD's. Remember those? Joshua Tree, Songs of Experience. Bat out of Hell. Babel (Mumford and Sons) Love & Hope & Sex & Dreams, Home, Live at the Pabst by the BoDeans. Hamilton. Secret World Live. Legend. Wrecking Ball, The Rising, Greatest Hits by Springsteen. Anything by Great Big Sea or Gaelic Storm. American Idiot. Girlfriend by Matthew Sweet. Graceland. Robbie Robertson.
-
And if you want to slow it down in between songs, my go to is "Bad" by U2.
-
"One Way Out" - The Allman Brothers Band
-
Off the top of my head...
"Sweet Emotion" - Aerosmith
"Radar Love" - Golding Earring
"Rock and Roll Aint Noise Pollution" - AC/DC
"Gimme Shelter" - Rolling Stones
"Sweet Emotion" was the #1 song I had and fits exactly what I am looking for (although I'm open to other genre's too, really any and all suggestions).
Also had "I want you to want me," "Sympathy for the devil," "all summer long," and "All night long"
Low rider is a cool option, but don't think it fits the bill. Maybe in the garage while uncovering the car and starting it up while telling myself I'm a baaaad man. ::)
-
I drive a '14 Mustang convertible with a CD player. Every Tuesday afternoon I rent CDs from the public library. Currently I have VH's Diver Down, the Best of Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band, and Kiss' Destroyer. Each is fantastic for driving.
-
"One Way Out" - The Allman Brothers Band
This was nowhere on my radar, just listened and it's perfect.

Pretty Woman with the Intruder intro is a damn good choice.

Don't leave out Hocus Pocus! It's also the background music to the best sporting goods commercial ever:

;D
But I will tell you that on more than one occasion, Vegas valets have parked her out front flanked by $100k 'quarter panel protecting' street rods. 'This baby is vintage Mr. G. How can a 20 year old car be in this good condition?' Dead serious. Crazy, I know.
(No, I didn't give em $20 tips to do so!!! :))

I did add it, but I have to admit that it goes on kind of long with the same repetitive chords for my taste.
After spending too much time this morning on this, I realize that I'm going to have to mix in more than classic rock. I need more genre's to mix in. I'm not saying we need some electronica or whatever ( I'm picturing the scene in Super Troopers when they pull over the Porsche), but definitely gotta have some change of pace.
I'm thinking maybe some Outkast, some might say Beastie Boys - No Sleep Till Brooklyn... too bad I hate the Beastie Boys.
OK fine, maybe even something wacky like "Happy hardcore." If you don't know what that is... er, it's probably not your thing. Don't judge. ;D
-
Oasis - Morning Glory (song not album)
Scorching guitar, gets me fired up every time
-
No blues? At least some Thorogood perhaps if not into Muddy.
-

What about the accordion solos? The whistling in what sounds like a bathroom? The flute solo that would put Ian Anderson to shame?
-

Had a customer trade in a base, white Mustang convertible. I added two-tone leather interior and Shelby stripes. It's only the V6, and has absolutely no options, but looks better than a pair of tits. When I drop my 6 year-old off at school he feels like a rock star.

you missed the Fast Times at Ridgemont High joke.
I really, really want to like Greta Van Fleet. Zep clone or not. I really want to like them. There are no new rock bands that play that type of music. But I'm just struggling to like them. And I'm mad at myself because I should like them.

I understand what you’re saying. I think they are a couple years away from being (real) good.

Except that this commercial is way more exciting than any real soccer match.

Anyone that hasn't driven a Miata may be surprised once they actually drive one. Nimble, quick, and just plain fun. I don't own one, but they're a ton of fun... and they don't break the budget.

Quick and nimble are the right words. They don't have big HP so it's never a 'beat anyone off the line'. They also corner on a dime and are surprisingly smooth and glued to the road at 85. But don't get anywhere near one flake of snow!
I've done 750-900 mile days in ours numerous times. Hard to believe given the size.

I always considered him a pompous a$$, but we’re just quibbling.
On the other hand, he has worked ( and spent tens of millions) for the betterment of mankind.

Go with "Poke Salad Annie"
By ZZ Top?
As a hit written and performed by Tony Joe White it was an awesome song. Fat Vegas Elvis did a bad cover, but the song belonged to TJW.

Garbage...Push It
Works well with performance cars....It used to be the main track for Gran Turismo on PlayStation lol.

you can do both

I don't understand this at all. So a guy who is worth nine figures can't be truly charitable unless he flies coach?
Look if you find him to be insufferable, I get that. If you don't like his music, that's fine too. But he seems like a pretty good guy all things considered.

I sort of had the same situation. Until last month, my fun ride was an '89 corvette convertible. It doesn't exactly get respect with all the corvette stereo types and that it's straight up 80's with the edgy body and digital dash. However, despite being low on power, it handles amazingly well even compared to modern sports cars and is a blast to drive on curvy roads. There's a slight tradeoff in that the miata would be smoother, but the old vette had some serious torque to offset the hard ride. Still very comfortable on long highway trips (and nearly 30 mpg hwy to boot!).
So if someone wants a car that is fun and doesn't care about trying to look "cool" I think both these cars fit the bill.

I lived in Boston when Joshua Tree was on the charts, and none of my Boston-Irish friends would listen to U2 because they are Protestants.

We're bringing ours back to Chicago this summer because we still have Illinois plates and it's emissions testing year. I'll be doing the Million Dollar Highway in about 2 weeks.

Black Betty might be the greatest song ever written.

Next time just tell him, “Lend me your ear while I call you a fooooooooooolll.”

No free bird?
Boston- foreplay/longtime

Black Betty might be the greatest song ever written.
Some random hilarious comments on the YouTube video for this song...
“I live in rural Alabama, and I could round up 5 guys who look exactly like this in about 10 minutes tops.”
Producer: “here’s your $5,000 video budget”
Manager at Scarf store: “That will be $4960.oo please.”
Lead singer’s grandma: “for $40 bucks, take the House for the whole week.”
Black Betty at a local Rotary picnic: “Do you have steak or shrimp on the BBQ?”
Grill master: Nooooo Black Betty, it’s Ham ‘n Lamb”
-
I'm partial to Driver's Seat by Sniff 'n the Tears
-
No free bird?

Nope. Massively overplayed.

No free bird?
It's for posers. I can picture the Hauser's with their dorky haircuts blasting it from their Corolla on their final ride up Wisconsin Avenue.
Most everything off The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars is good for a drive.

I was not familiar with this... seeing pictures of some of those sections, good god I'd be white knuckled near some of those turns with the drop offs.

Plan on visiting the south rim in the national park.

Adjacent to my old stomping grounds. Winter bus trips over Red Mountain Pass for school sports were...exhilarating.

I'll bet. Already looking at my long range weather forecast. High 60s and sunny. Should be perfect. And I can always adjust my timing.
-
"Kickstart My Heart" - Motley Crue
"Runnin Down a Dream" - Petty
Although classic rock isn't my go-to genre, I've actually found myself speeding down the road when songs come on the radio more than several times.
Also:
"Strength" - the Alarm
"Blue Highway" - Billy Idol
"Wildflower" - the Cult
"Dim" - dada
"Miserlou" - Dick Dale
"Denise" - Fountain of Wayne
"I'm Not a Number" - Gary Myrick & the Figures
"She's Kerosene" - the Interrupters
"Stone Pony" - the Romantics
"When She Begins" or "Story of My Life" - Social Distortion
"Somebody to Shove - Soul Asylum
"Let it Happen" - Tame Impala
"Got Me Under Pressure - ZZ Top
Give these a listen--I think they fit your criteria.

Been there before?

Been there before?
I have not, at least dating back to 1968 when I 'might' have visited with my parents but I don't think Black Canyon was a national park at the time. On that trip we absolutely visited Mesa Verde and took the narrow gauge Silverton train. Did the same with our family in 2001. Last time in the area I continued east toward Great Sandunes. Northeast this time. :)

South Rim has lots of short hikes along the road - mostly about 1/4 mile for overlooks. At the end of the road their is a trail to Warner Point which is the best hike. Unless it's real hot, it is a fairly easy walk - maybe 1 1/2 - 2 miles round. But well worth it.
As I'm sure you know, there are a lot of nice rafting spots as you head east or northeast. Water might be a bit cold, but May is the best time for whitewater rafting out there due to the snow melt runoff.
My wife and I used to head out there every other year - just love the area. Let Scoop know how the trip goes.
-
Still on CD's.... I have about a dozen 'live from the WXRT archives' discs. Get a handful of those and set out knowing you are going to hear unique live recording for the next 10 hours.

I'll do it. I probably won't have time to raft as this is more sightseeing on the drive home. But you never know on a 1/2 day.
-
I was doing this wrong the whole time... I should just put baby shark on repeat.

You only need to actually play it once. After that, it will stick in your head the rest of the day.

So it's looking damn iffy. I don't think the Miata wants to play in an effin' foot of snow at elevation. My somewhat revised route has me running the Grand Staircase tomorrow instead. If necessary, I can get all the way to Denver and beat the snow up high. Colorado has a fantastic weather/road conditions app that I'll play close attention to. And if it gets really bad, I can hunker down in Grand Junction for a couple days. I guess the M$H will have to wait until Fall. The aspens will be nice then.

How is there a four page driving music thread and no mention of Motorhead?
If you want something more than Rock add Diamonds and Guns by The Transplants.
Doom and Gloom- The Rolling Stones
Don't Drag Me Down- Social Distortion
Reach for the Sky- Social Distortion
London Girls- The Vibrators
The Chase- Angel City Outcasts
Hell Yeah- Rev Theory
Just A Ride- The Virginmarys
Implosionatic- Hot Hot Heat
-
So not like you guys care (or should), but I rode the Staircase today. Been almost 20 years. Then east through Capitol Reef. There were times the nearest human was about 1,000,000 miles away. Folks from the east have no concept.
And I'm glad I missed the Bucks game!

No, it's 2 lane paved the whole way.
