Hayward to try out for University Games team

MU forward Lazar Hayward has been invited to try out for USA Basketball's World University Games team.

The 6-foot-6 Hayward is one of 20-some players who will try out from June 16-18 at USA Basketball's training facility in Colorado Springs, Colo.

There will be two rounds of cuts, with the team scheduled to be announced on June 22.

The 24th World University Games will take place from July 2-12 in Belgrade, Serbia. UW's Bo Ryan will coach the team.

"It'd be great for him," said coach Buzz Williams. "I think it'll be a great experience. He's excited. He's been working hard, and I think he'll do well.

"I think any time in international play you have somebody who can shoot it as well as he can, you'll at least have a chance."

Fellow Big East players Corey Fisher of Villanova and Da'Sean Butler and Devin Ebanks of West Virginia have also been invited to try out, according to reports.

Hayward, who just completed his junior year, is the fifth MU player in recent years to be invited by USA Basketball to try out for an international team.

Jerel McNeal, Wesley Matthews and Dominic James all were invited to try out for the Pan Am Games team in July, 2007. Neither McNeal nor Matthews made the team, and James declined his invitation in favor of summer school.

Steve Novak was one of 17 finalists for the Pan Am Games team as a freshman in June, 2003, but didn't survive the cutdown to 12 players.

McNeal, by the way, worked out for the Oklahoma City Thunder last Friday, and has a workout scheduled with the Houston Rockets for Thursday.

M Club Hall of Fame additions: Dwyane Wade and the 2002-'03 Final Four men's basketball team are among those who will be inducted into the Marquette M Club Hall of Fame on Aug. 22.

Bill Cords, who served as MU's athletics director from 1987-2007, will also be inducted.

Does anyone know off the top of their head if these try outs are open to the public?

They have not been open in the past. I am hoping they are this year as I live near Colorado Springs and would love to see Hayward. I will definitely check it out.
