Title: The official Marquette nostalgic thread
Post by: ChitownSpaceForRent on February 16, 2014, 11:27:44 PM
So it seems like a lot of threads go off on tangents of people remembering their MU days so why not have all these memories in one place? That and I always love reading the stories of how different MU was.

After hearing Dr. Rhodes lament the 'good old days' when students would bring pitchers of beer to class in the afternoon, showing up on the last day of class with a case of Special Export (reported to be his favorite) and passing them around.....in a 9 AM class.

Junior year, the poli sci prof (just visiting MU for the year, I don't recall his name) lamented that all of the classrooms on campus were locked for the weekend so there was nowhere to have a review session for the final.    He was skeptical when the class suggested Hegarty's, but we ultimately convinced him.   It turned out that he had a weakness for Guinness.   So, while the class plied him with Guinness and quietly nursed our own beers, he gave us the list of 6 questions that he was going to choose from for the final and then, after another Guinness, gave us the outlines to each.    I made good notes, boiled down the outline for each of the questions to fit on a 3 x 5 card, filled a blue-book in 45 minutes, and aced the final.   To this day, I am not sure if we played him or if he played us.   Doesn't matter.

IIRC, Tower, we were in school at the same time--in the spring of '85, I took a poly sci class in ethical decision making from Joseph Nye,  a visiting prof from Harvard - I think the Allis Chalmers visiting something or other.  One of the most interesting classes I had at MU, though if it was the same guy, I missed that review!

Technology circa 1982:  connecting Radio Shack dial pad to a boom-box and holding the boom-box next to our rotary dial dorm phone to key in our MCI passcode to make cheap long distance calls.

No, there was no internet when I attended.

On another note I do remember one the rights of passage while at MU was to take the brewery tours: Pabst, Schlizt and Miller; always had free samples at the end and never carded anyone for proof of age. Back then you could drink beer at 18 throughout the state except in Milwaukee and a few other counties in south east Wisconsin so they sort of looked the other way.

We also had to wear shirts and ties for the evening meal. There was a curfew of 11 pm for men and 10:30 pm for women Sunday through Thursday; Midnight for the ladies and 1 am for the gents on weekends.

In early November they had a big tip off parade down West Wisconsin Avenue to open the basketball season; all the Frats, Sororities and other student Organizations would compete for the best float.

That is incredible for me to think about. Shirts and ties at dinner? Also hilarious that women had an earlier curfew than men.

I think there are a couple of issues at play here:

1.  Kids do study harder; Marquette is a tougher school than it was back in the day.
2.  If you look at my list, over half of the items were related to school-sponsored activities. It seems like most of the social scene evolves around opportunities to binge-drink.  Not exactly the stuff of fond memories.

Different yes things change.  However, I doubt the drinking has changed very much (as I sit here with a guiness float).  I think due to DPS and the board having a stick up their rear ends the in your face social scene isn't as there as it used to be but I mean my freshman year we were named Playboy's No1 Catholic party school so it can't be too bad.

I must admit that is still true to this day. My favorite stall on campus is the handicap stall in the Raynor basement. Its like an entire hall way leading up to the toilet. In all seriousness it may be more then half the size of my dorm room freshman year in McCormick.

Junior year, living in Tower (912) and eating across the street at Cobeen.    One Friday afternoon at dinner time, having gotten an early start on the weekend, some of the guys from my floor decided to steal the ice cream scoops.   We set them in the middle of our table, 15 feet from the ice cream freezer.   None of the Cobeen residents would come get them.   They would, however, go and complain about the lack of scoops.   More scoops were brought.   The guys from my floor stole them, too.   Chaos ensued.   The lack of scoops caused quite the commotion.   All the while, all 4 scoops were sitting nearby.   We weren't doing anything to them, just curious to see what would happen and if anyone would come get them.

rec center for a basketball game when we were hung over.

One of my favorite memories at MU (the names have been changed to protect the guilty) was freshmen year.  Some guys on our side of the 8th floor at McCormick challenged some guys on the other side of the floor to a basketball game at the Rec Center on either a Saturday or Sunday morning, I forget which.  Anyway, we were out late the night before imbibing some of Milwaukee's Best at the various campus bars.  So the next morning we're pretty hung over and one of our guys wouldn't get up.  So I'm banging on the door, and he mumbles, "No way man, I can't make it."  So I say, 'Come on, we're all hung over, get up!"  And again he says, "I can't."  We repeat this stupid conversation a couple more times and finally i say, "Why can't you?"  And he says, "I threw up in my sneakers!"

We finally got him up and he rinsed off his sneakers in the shower and he played.  Now, THAT'S the heart of a champion!

I must admit that is still true to this day. My favorite stall on campus is the handicap stall in the Raynor basement. Its like an entire hall way leading up to the toilet. In all seriousness it may be more then half the size of my dorm room freshman year in McCormick.

Ha, very true

Yes!  (1979-1983) Also Suburpia subs, Boy Blue on Wells, and Zantigo fast food Mexican on about 24th and Wisconsin.  The MECCA was always packed to the rafters (10,938 capacity); watching Days of Our Lives and General Hospital during the coldest winter days in the Union with a plump hot dog & fries; and "studying" outside with a beer on one of the lawns on any warm sunny afternoon in April.

Also remember playing an intramural playoff BBall game at the rec center at about 9:30 pm on one St. Patty's day.  Not wanting to miss all the holiday fun, we of course hit O'D's for our pregame "warmups" right after dinner.  Luckily, we survived and advanced only because our opponents were drunker than we were!  Both teams took the postgame celebration back to O'D's--I'm sure some combat juice was involved--it was all a fruit juicy red and kelly green blur from that point on.

Hmmm...

Schroeder 1008?  Down the hallway to the left, on the right hand side.

I was in 1010. Off the Vator, turn left (north) on the left (west) side. The evens looked west towards McCormick/Circle Inn/Angelos.

So true! Wow. Something like 2-3x the size of the first floor bathrooms, and no one knew they existed (or something?) so they were never used!

Judging by this thread, it sounds lik they were used plenty.

I used The Annex; they were very under-used, and you could smoke in there.

Dime taps at the State House.  Getting a sandwich and a beer at the Mugrack.  The rec center for a basketball game when we were hung over.  Living 120 steps from OD's.  10 pm mass at Schroeder.  Our dog Duke.  Parties at the Lighthouse.

Was Duke a Doberman?

We had a Chessie named Rasta. The Swamp.

I'm sure that fools your wife...

Smokers have no idea since their senses are dulled but you can smell them a mile away. There is zero possibility of masking that odor on clothes and breath from a non-smoker. Perhaps the most unusual habit ever.

Duke was a lab-shepherd mix. He was one of the Lighthouse guy's brother's dog and we got him for our senior year.
Among other things he could do, he would go with us to Wales, sit outside and wait for us with no leash.  He was that good of a dog.  True story.

I ask because there were some guys with a house on State that had a Doberman with the same name.  The dog was highly trained to give the neighbors a "warm" welcome when they would walk by the house.  The "locals" would cross the street to avoid getting anywhere near this dog.

In the late 70's there was a black lab with a white spot on his neck, giving the appearance of a Roman Collar. He was named Landy after Fr Landwermeyer. Landy would wait patiently outside Lalumiere or the Chemistry building while his owner was in class. Great dog. People would throw Frisbees to him and after playing Landy would go back to wait for his friend.

I had my first gyro in 1978 at the food court of the newly-opened Hickory Hollow mall in Nashville.  There was a big sign out front explaining what a gyro was and how to pronounce it (people still called them "Jy-roes", though).

And of course, it being Tennessee, they served them with barbecue sauce instead of tzatziki sauce.

McCormick 5 East. 9th floor Schroeder. First party at the "Tool Box" and Kensington. My buddies' place at Renee. Bradford Beach. The opening section of "Where The Streets Have No Name." Marquette Gyros. Some kid in the dead of winter with no gloves or coat hurling snowballs at a dark house for not having a party. Yes, those Friday acco exams.

Anyone else live all the way up on 22nd? We had balconies in the front and back of every apartment. The Harp & Shamrock was right across the street and we were right by Conway's. It was a great little spot but it seemed like nobody ever wanted to hike that far west.

Nice call on Bradford Beach, at least for the first two weeks of school (and a lobster boil clam bake that I think a couple of Boston guys put together in the Spring of '84).

Also, in the summer-and I spent two great summers in Milwaukee with 1) the par 3 golf course at the lake (all you needed was a wedge and putter, and you could rent those) and 2) SUMMERFEST -- drinking wine Steidle's (sp?) coolers down like they were grape Nehi (which it pretty much was, accept all of a sudden you were toast).  I am embarrassed by and love the 80s so much.

Thanks for remembering the concerts guys.  While we made a few mistakes, I think our band lineups were pretty good.

By the way, I take zero responsibility for the Chicago themed weekend when we brought sliders up from White Castle's as the food offering for the big Blues Fest.  Yeah, I'm talking about THOSE sliders that weren't properly 'handled' and got numerous students sick.  (Fits nicely with the Raynor bathroom discussion, don't ya think.)

Helluva memory.  I couldn't have come up with that on my own.

Acts you all might remember down in the grill besides the BoDeans (after my time as I recall) and the Femmes include:

- Big Twist and the Mellow Fellows
- Koko Taylor
- Magic Slim
- Arroyo
- X-Cleavers
- Badboy
- Pat McCurdy and the Men About Town
- Snopek

and many others I simply can't remember.  Milwaukee had a vibrant live music scene back in the day.  And the Grill time slot was perfect for bands because they would typically have a second gig that night, even if traveling from Chicago as was the case with the blues artists.

One quick story.  We were thisclose to having Survivor inked for the 1981 Party of the Century.  We were literally in meaningful negotiations with their agency when Eye of the Tiger went to #1.  Our checkbook never had a chance.  But can you imagine that out in the central mall?

My Frosh year Southside Johnny put on a great show at the Varsity.  I particularly enjoyed it because I was just a kid in the crowd that day.

I've got to give props to Bob Babisch down at Summerfest.  He was very helpful to us, made introductions, showed us the ropes and never asked for anything in return. 35 years later he's still doing a great job.

Well, when I was drinking beer there the drinking age was 18.  Pretty much every student was of legal drinking age.  When they raised the drinking age to 21, most students became underage so the school started to try to deemphasize alcohol on campus.

Haha we used to roll ourselves in the curtains of schroeder and have like six fans blowing at us from the door.

Glow

We must have met back in the day. I was in ASMU and knew Shady Jim, Marty King, Dave Sinker, et al... Unlikely we didn't meet up.

Yep.  Sinker is down here in metro Chicago. Runs a comedy club/school in Naperville.  I think he was a Senior when I was a Frosh.  Marty is one year ahead of me and turned Grill Concerts over to me for my Junior year after I left the Senate.  Senior year I did both Grill and Major Concerts including the Romantics.  I had heard of Shady but don't think I know him. Perhaps just a bit ahead of me. 3-4 years made a difference.

wow, that would have been something to see

Smooth, what you need to appreciate is that even dumb squirrels occasionally find a nut.  The reality was I begrudgingly booked the Violent Femmes for their first appearance at MU.  While it was well attended, it was far from being some epic show. Like good scotch, they're an acquired taste and not for everyone.  Revolutionary music is often like that.  Find your own special vibe, whatever it is.  Don't follow the sheep.

Rocky was known to indulge. Of course, he was an inmate and not a warden when we were both on 10.

Dodging MPD officers trying to give you a jaywalking ticket.
$1 import night at the Ardmore.
Always finding a game at the rec center.
Wales on Wells burgers and Cheddar fries.
Amigo's Chimi.   (Sorry, Real Chili was never my thing)
Radio Doctors.
Seeing Darryl Dawkins, Buck Williams, Micheal Ray Richardson, Mickey Johnson and Kelvin Ransey walk through the doors at Radio Doctors.
Safe House.   Having freaky things done to me in the loft at the Safe House.
Closing Hegarty's every Sunday night for a semester.  (Fun Bunch!    Just one more!)
Having my buddy's date run her foot up and down my leg while at the spring Formal.
Mass at the Gesu.
Drinking with Jesuits during the JesRes open house.
WMUR.
Watching the Marquette interchange from my loft as a cure for insomnia or a sense of perspective.
Watching the frisbee sail out the window at the north end of the hall and out onto the highway.
Mini golf in the hallway with the hole we cut out of the carpet by the elevator.
Walking in on my roommate and his girlfriend at an inopportune moment.
The first Jigglesfest.
Getting hustled at pool for the only time in my life (I was a shark) when my roommate didn't spot an even better shark at O'P's.     Can't win if I can't get to the table.
Having my freshman year RA threaten to write a bunch of us up as we noisily celebrated the ground ball going through Durham's legs.

I remember Dave got a job as a writer for the Gong Show. I was in flight school and he was writing gags for Chuck Barris and he made 3 times what I did. Sinker was a funny guy.

Marty was a bit of a goof ball. He booked a clown act (I think the guy's name was Bobo.) Paul Winter wasn't pleased.

Shady Jim put the Mug Rack Friday concerts on the map. He had the position for two years and did such a great job that he made it a Milwaukee event. Shady got more ass than a public toilet seat.

Does somebody know exactly when the Mugrack was built?  I'm thinking it must have been around 1977-78.  It certainly existed when I arrived on campus in August 79.  Loved that place.

Grill Concerts were an absolutely spectacular concept.  Full fledged party at 3pm every Friday afternoon.  Great music, free flowing pitchers of beer.  Perfect way to kick off the weekend.

Funny, most of us learned how to responsibly (and legally) enjoy alcohol throughout college.  I sometimes wonder if the 21 age limit has caused more harm than good.  A Mugrack or Grunt's pitcher with your buddies was always safe, even when we were 18 and stupid.  Not so sure about every Kilbourn red cup party these days.  I worry about the new Frosh every August.

Mugrack opened up in 78-79. Shady Jim started the Friday afternoon Grill concerts, calling them Shady Jim Productions. No kidding, full house from Day One. Lots of local females would show up.

I recall they had great sammies. One of the first build your own in Milwaukee.

I'm surprised nobody ever mentions Sy's Deli on Wells near the Boy Blue. Classic Kosher Deli with steamed chickens hanging in the window.

When I had money, I buy a couple burgers or Italian sausages from Sy's to cook up.  They were a little pricey, but boy where they good.  And I always thought the two old guys working there would be behind the counter selling meat until they died.

They were great.  Thirty years later walking through an airport, I saw a chain sandwich shop where you checked off your order on a paper bag and handed it to the cashier.   It immediately took me back to the Mugrack.

The other nice thing about the Mugrack was the student bartenders and sandwich makers.  While I had a great time with Archie and Mitch at the Lanche, a sandwich, beer and conversation at the 'rack was always an attractive alternative.

This was a great show. The band was drunker than monkeys (you know how drunk they can get) and tore the roof off the place when they returned around midnight. We were freshmen and had to call our RA and convince him to come and join us because the bus stopped running at midnight and we didn't have a car and didn't want to walk back in the early AM when the show would have ended. He owed us the rest of the year.....

I was on a vator in Schroeder that had way too many people on it. It reached the 1F but as the doors began to open it dropped about 5 feet. We were stuck there for almost an hour.

Guy named Dave Bolger ran for ASMU President. People wrote, "The guy who makes the underwear" on every single poster. Dave ended up winning.

My freshman year, McCormick was all male and we were in the penthouse on the top floor.  Some idiot late at night \ early in the morning crashed in the elevator doors so that they were hanging and could have fallen down the shaft.  Very fortunate.  No one owned up to it, so our entire floor was billed for it...each of us had some flesh extracted for that one.

Loved Arroyo - I became a fan of the SoCal Rock scene due to my roomie's influence and Arroyo fit right in.

I was in the apartments right next to M&I Bank, across the street from the never creepy Biller Hotel. Cambridge Apartments, I believe.

We were in the St. James Court apts.  We had the last unit on the first floor.  Same floor as atty Alan Eisenberg - great party apartment.  Trashed our share of disposable goodwill furniture there.

Friends night? Absolutely not. Not sure I ever danced.. more like stumbled around... BUT.. WMUR, nice call on that. One of my best friends still today was the station manager for a year.. we did a show together and I did one of my own. Later (shortly after graduation), he and I would reunite and the "real" airwaves of Milwaukee for many years.

I'm sure the equipment has been upgraded *just* a little bit.

Random question, does anyone know when and why MU stopped serving Alcohol at the Brooks lounge in the AMU?

I assume its when the Annex opened up. That became the university's bar.

The Brooks lounge is totally underutilized. I never went there once and never knew anyone who did. The pool table thing is kind of cool, but what's the point of going to a place like that if you can't have a beer?

They should start serving beer again or re-purpose the space.

I agree! I mean I thought it was cool when I visited MU in High School as a barlike hang out but then again I also thought the "man cave" in OD's basement was cool to in HS.  But the moment I got here I realized both were essentially homes for the stricktest rules I've seen and really just a waste of space that could've been awesome if the drinking age was still 18.

I'm sure the administration is reluctant to serve alcohol to students at the union. I'm sure that's why they opened the Annex, so you can card students going in the door, and don't need to worry about students wandering in from other school functions which are hosted at the union. You also don't have to worry about drunk students wandering into study groups or MUSG meetings. I get it.

But then they should repurpose the space. Its a waste right now.

I think they could get a lot of students there if they just served a couple different beers on tap, no hard liquor. It would become a cool place to hangout. They would just have to card at the door. Maybe its too much effort and liability.

Some upgrades to the serving presentation, but similar to what I saw in 1995

Thursday nights at the Brown Bottle... $1 import bottles all night. Good times.

Free concert tickets to Eagles Ballroom. Student volunteers would pass out those tickets before just about every good show. I remember seeing Public Enemy and almost going to Eminem before anyone really knew who he was.
