In the latest issue of the MARQ Marquette Magazine, the front page refers you to page 2 to read about “#MUMBB”
On page 2 and 3 are a bunch of words on the men's basketball team and their season.
The hashtag used in reality is #mubb. There's been no change in that from the school's Twitter accounts, etc...
..but, is this an early preview of a desire to change the hashtag in an 'equity' move, or simply awful editing?

The hashtag for the Men’s team ranks up there with who makes it on the team in walk-on tryouts of things I’m worried about for next year.

Last time I was on campus I noticed that there is a Land Acknowledgement sign near the Union. Good on the university for doing so. I doubt they will have a postgame announcement every game, but maybe when they play the N7 game.

Forgive my total ignorance but what is a land acknowledgement sign?

Never mind. Googled it.

Agreed. Don’t have a problem with it. Is it necessary, probably not. God Bless America during Sunday baseball games needs to go though. I do sometimes cringe when that pops on. Not because I don’t like the song but because it seems like MLB is trying too hard to meld love of country and baseball.

Their countries are not as great as ours. We are (were?) the best. Now that that is going to change, maybe we should pivot. Let’s only do the national anthem when at least 25% of the competitors are not the same sex as the league they’re playing in.

That phrase, "turning the other cheek" was covered in my pastor's sermon a few months ago. He provided some context that I hadn't heard before that I thought was interesting. The actual passage reads "if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also". In this case the other cheek is the left cheek. Most people (including the Roman occupiers at the time) were right handed. If they slapped your right cheek, it meant they were backhanding you which was considered a sign of disrespect. If you turned your cheek and made them hit you in the left cheek, they would have to punch you as an equal. So another interpretation of that phrase is as an act of defiant pacifism rather than just being a doormat.

That's just because you are used to it. My guess is that those who come here from elsewhere find it a little odd.
But it really isn't a big deal. I don't mind it, but if it went away, I wouldn't really miss it.

I’ve never understood playing the national anthem before sporting events at all sorts of levels. Rather than inspiring patriotism, I think it almost makes the anthem almost background noise.

our desire to forever be free; our love of sport; free people coming together to exercise that freedom through competition. I guess that’s how I’ve always looked at it. I suppose our national anthem means something different to each person, or maybe nothing at all. But, I’ve always appreciated its playing. (btw, the Indy 500 is upcoming. Pre-race pageantry of taps-for Memorial Day, anthem, and flyover…Awesome!)

word is that brittney griner seems to have a new appreciation for it, but no big deal to you.
to some, it does mean something. oh, it would go away alright, if you were to have to do a little time in an overseas prison or the like. then, if you were able to get out and return to this country and heard that song and those words being sung by americans, it might sound just a little bit different even to sultan. whether or not it would make you swallow a little hard, make your eyes watery...to most it would, but i'm only speaking from how i might feel. to scoops "most interesting man" meh, i guess.

What? I was talking about its presence at sporting events. It doesn’t strike me as strange, but if we just decided to stop doing it, it wouldn’t really bother me.
Not sure what that has to do with my profession or…overseas prisons???
Anyway I think “America the Beautiful” is a better song and would be a better anthem, but that’s just an opinion.

I am old enough to remember going through a time when a segment of our population felt disrespect for the American flag and national anthem because they felt we were involved in an immoral war in Vietnam. I recently viewed a couple Youtube videos that told the story behind the national anthem and explained the history and significance of it. It helped me understand how many Americans feel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n7BMjS9vhVI and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hZe8CPGA1E

Went to my son’s basketball game yesterday, no National Anthem. unnatural carnal knowledgeing Biden.

Wife took me to see a play last year, no National Anthem. I bet it was Kamala Harris.
5 O Clock Mass last night, solid homily but we didn’t get the National Anthem. Has to be George Soros.
Next weekend is Graduation? Will Marquette have the balls to play our National Anthem or will the woke left win again? Sad!

Canada does. Go to a junior hockey game, and the crowd sings Oh Canada. Not sure why you think its weird. It's a way for people to show their patriotism. No one is forcing you to participate. Go to the beer stand, or restroom, or sit there and read scoop.

I have always loved the playing of the National Anthem at sporting events. My Dad was a WWII vet and teared up every time it was played, regardless if he was in public. To this day I share that trait with my Dad.
I can only speak for myself, but this country has been very good to my family and I will never tire of tearing up during the Anthem.
Funny thing, my Dad hated how the real Goose behaved during the Anthem at MU, but cheered his ass off for him every game. He was able to separate his feelings and still respect Brell as a player and person.

There it is - a lib had to make this political
-
I want to add a ps to my previous post about the time of the Vietnam war for any young scoopers that wouldn’t know. That was during the Al era when MU was almost always ranked, often in the top ten. Near the end of the national anthem, just before “and the home of the brave,” someone would yell out from near the rafters at the arena “Give ‘em hell Al.” The crowd would erupt in applause. I think there was more reverence for Al than our anthem.

I have an uncle that lives at the VA. He served in Vietnam and it absolutely ruined him. His life is never the same after came back. Though to this day he’s proud of his service and his country. I count myself in the same boat. This is an amazing country.
What I get really, really, really tired of though is teams & leagues that benefit & profit off of “support the troops” and other forms of “Patriotism”. The NFL is certainly the worst offender.
I went to the Tampa Bay Lightning game a few weeks ago and they had four different salutes to military not a single one with a sponsor. That’s good.
You go a Brewers game and they got Johnsonville sponsoring the military fan of the game. I mean give me a break they’re basically cashing checks on the military’s back. My uncle gave his life for the Brewers to get a $50,000 sponsorship? I don’t think so.
That’s the stuff that sucks.

Agree with you wholeheartedly. There is nothing political about a national anthem--only the numbnuts that object to it. Ask the Marines who raised the flags at Iwo Jima, the boodiest battle in USMC History. We should all show deference to the Anthem. If one cant, then be silent and drink a beer with Dylan Mulvaney.

Fine, no other domestic pro league except those based in the US. Of course they play the Canadian national anthem in the NHL when they play the USA’s during games involving the US-based teams.
They also play both when both are involved, but this is obviously a US-driven anomaly in professional sports.
-
Canada does. Go to a junior hockey game, and the crowd sings Oh Canada. Not sure why you think its weird. It's a way for people to show their patriotism. No one is forcing you to participate. Go to the beer stand, or restroom, or sit there and read scoop.
So you found one non-pro league in the most culturally-aligned country to the U.S. that also does this.
I don’t think it’s awful or anything, but you should be able to understand that it’s objectively odd that our sporting events begin with literal pro-military PR performances like flyovers and the playing of a national anthem before matches featuring players from numerous different countries. If you don’t, you need to get outside of the US more - it’s also one of the reasons our games never start on time either!
In the vast majority of countries (maybe there are a few more that also do it), the national anthem is reserved for more special occasions than a Cleveland - St. Louis game.
Hell, let’s not pretend the fans in attendance care or show deference. 99% are trying to get their beers before tipoff, in the restroom, checking their phones, or chanting whatever custom line their team yells at the end a la “and the Home of the CHIEFSSSSS”.
-
You should ask the marines at Iwo Jima that raised the flags about that.
Try it yourself goofball. Dont think you could understand the USMC. Likely you would be a follower of the Communist manifesto.

I’ve read extensively about the battle of Iwo Jima and the exploitation of the men that raised the flag and how they were discarded by fellow Americans following the war.
Wisconsin’s very own John Bradley purposely avoided discussing the flag raising until the day he died.

Personally I’m just glad that the anthem at sporting events is so sacred the team stops all concession sales during it. Can you imagine how disrespectful that would be to do financial transactions during such an important moment!

Who says they hate the national anthem? It’s unnecessary to be played at sporting events.
Part of what makes America great isn’t blind loyalty to a song or piece of cloth

I’ve read extensively about the battle of Iwo Jima and the exploitation of the men that raised the flag and how they were discarded by fellow Americans following the war.
Wisconsin’s very own John Bradley purposely avoided discussing the flag raising until the day he died.
These men deserved far better than a song being played before a sporting event
My Dad fought on Iwo Jima but was OK with the National Anthem and the American flag. Too late for you to straighten him out on that - he’s dead.

You can be fine with the anthem and flag. You can also be fine not having blind loyalty to a piece of cloth and a song.
It’s not straightening anyone out.

It’s all about one’s perspective, I guess. But if you’re in a foxhole fighting for your own and your fellow Marine’s lives blind loyalty to that piece of cloth is a pretty good idea.

Then how about we treat them with more than lip service at an unimportant sporting event? Fix the VA, take care of the wounded warriors beyond flashing them on a Jumbotron for a few cheap pops?
We talk an awful lot about patriotism but when we have an opportunity to take care of our veterans, it turns into a pissing match about unimportant stuff like national anthems and respecting the flag.
As someone that comes from a military family, I’ve seen first hand how patriots are treated. They should be more than props and forgotten when the mission is done.

My dad was a WWII vet. Stood for the anthem. Pissed guys were laughing in the beer line during the anthem. But strangely enough never had a flag burning party. I was told that anyone had a problem with the anthem before any activities was a flag burning commie.
Do the anthem before any event guys play the anthem before sex? Even with themselves?

I think you are painting with a very wide brush. Not going to get in details, but there are many on here, and elsewhere, that are active in supporting our vets, first responders and current military.
I get your schtick and do not get pissed off at your jokes, but I think you are off base with your comments on your last post.
I am thankful every fxxking today for what our veterans and others have done to make my life a better place. I was telling my kids today about the sacrifices my Mom made when my Dad was overseas and she is as much of a patriot as my Dad. They did not need anything from anyone, except each other. I will honor that commitment with pride.

Sorry, Goose, but I believe those helping to be in the minority, not the majority. And I cannot stand when we use military members as props at sporting events or things of that nature.
We also paint a broad brush when we talk about service members undying love for country because they chose to serve and sacrificed greatly to do so. Many became disillusioned at their country and how they were treated by their country while in service or upon leaving the service.
We’ve conflated national anthems and the flag as the ultimate sign of patriotism when for many, it’s the absolute least they do to make their country or community better.
I’m glad that you honor your parents the way to do. I truly am.

My personal favorite was minor league baseball gane where the guy left his MAGA hat on during the anthem. My arm hurt afterwards because my wife kept punching me because I was laughing out loud.
Can former military wear their hats during the anthem?

Honestly don’t understand this. Who “strangely enough never had a flag burning party”? The guys laughing in the beer line? And who told you that guys who had a problem with the anthem were flag burning commies? Your Dad?
And playing the anthem before games means we have to play it before sex, including masturbation? Is that the “any event” guys? Who are they?

My parents came from Serbia and Lithuania and were first generation born in the USA and both were born over 100 years ago. Side bar, I am 59 years old and they had me late in life. That said, my parents came from nothing and NEVER expected Uncle Sam to provide anything other than an opportunity.
I say this because there are a great deal of people in this country that do respect the flag and and anthem because it means something. IMO, many have forgotten what America represents and that makes me sad.
Will add, my parents questioned the government, our leaders and direction of our country, but never questioned the greatness of what America represented. My grandma never spoke English to me, but loved the opportunity she gave my Mom. That is why I will always tear up during the national anthem.

I'm genuinely curious, for those who in response to "playing the anthem before sporting events is cringe" went straight to some version of "you hate America", "why don't you leave?", or "you must be a commie"....are you like that in all aspects of life or just with your love of country?
For example, if one of your coworkers caught you at the water cooler and complained about the fluorescent lighting your company uses, do you accuse them of hating the company and telling them to find another job? If your spouse tells you about one of your quirks they could do without, do you call them a name and say they should leave the marriage?
If no, why does someone mildly criticizing one small aspsect of American culture provoke that response?

But if you mean some sort predestination or such nonsense…

You’re certainly right about many vets becoming disillusioned when they return home. I had many friends who fought in Viet Nam and the way they were characterized and treated by many of those who opposed the war was disgusting. Talk about a “broad brush” - they came home with a whole lot of people calling them murderers.
Not “cringing” when you hear the National Anthem doesn’t mean one thinks the US is perfect. Respecting what our flag stands for doesn’t equate to agreeing with every decision our politicians make.
You take issue with the way the government treats vets after their service. Good for you. Continue to advocate for more and better services for them. But I don’t think cringing during the National Anthem or disrespecting the flag will help much.

So another interpretation of that phrase is as an act of defiant pacifism rather than just being a doormat.
https://www.biblestudytools.com/bible-study/topical-studies/what-does-it-really-mean-to-turn-the-other-cheek.html if you are interested in reading about it.
Thanks, interesting take on turning the other cheek. I remember a cartoon commentary on that passage with Jesus "mooning" the slapper. That being said Jesus was no pacifist when it came to the money changers in the Temple.

This gets it. Most are just pointing out that it’s a bit strange we play the national anthem and perform overt pro-military stunts before games, and the response is to call literally everyone communists who are not right-wing and accuse us of hating the military.
Wasn’t it a few years ago some NBA team (Dallas or Miami maybe?) stopped doing it for a few weeks and no one cared until someone mentioned it on Twitter and it blew up and they had to go back to it.
-

I think Rico's larger point is that we substitute performative measures for actual ones that make differences. For instance, loving the troops because you stand up and cheer at a baseball game versus advocating for full physical, mental and emotional support of our veterans.
Performative measures are fine...as long as we are doing the hard work that comes with it. But we oftentimes don't.

BINGO
As a country, we treat our veterans horribly relative to all they've done for us. Horribly.
As was stated, even "libtard snowflake cuck" Jon Stewart knows this and does more for this cause than any other celebrity (hell, politician) that I can tell.
I enjoy the anthem before big games (the one in Colorado last Stanley Cup Final was incredible, for example), but the anthem is unquestionably paid patriotism and it only became a lightning rod when Kaepernick kneeled (after consultation with a former vet) to bring awareness to police brutality.
Of course, because everything is a culture war these days we all know what came of that. And like TAMU stated, if you mention this or hint at the anthem as, at times, a performative drop in the bucket compared to what soldiers and vets ACTUALLY DESERVE, you're labeled as some America-hating commie.
But we all saw the actual snowflake pearl clutching that kicked off this whole crapshow so who's even surprised anymore.
-
Compulsory patriotism at professional sporting events doesn't come cheap.
Arizona Senators John McCain and Jeff Flake have released a report following an investigation into Department of Defense spending for so-called "paid patriotism" efforts at professional sporting events, and found that the Pentagon paid $6.8 million in taxpayer money to various sports franchises over the last four years. McCain and Flake investigated the spending after learning in June that the New Jersey Army National Guard paid the New York Jets $115,000 to honor soldiers at games. The vast majority of the DOD money went to NFL teams, but the report found that teams in all the major professional sports, including the NBA, MLB, MLS, and NHL, had contracts with various branches of the armed services for these JumboTron-ed displays of patriotism.

This is why the right wing is correctly focusing on Mr. Potato Head, the M&Ms, Mickey Mouse, and black Little Mermaids, 'cause they are all a bunch of godless commies that don't stand for the anthem, and that's what's important in 'Murica.

I don’t disagree and it’s a point well taken. Performance is certainly more important than pomp. That said, I don’t see a whole lot of benefit to finding our National Anthem cringeworthy or dismissing the flag as nothing but a piece of cloth.

Other side:
House Republicans have accused the Biden administration of lying to veterans about purported cuts to their benefits concealed in the debt limit bill their conference passed last week.
GOP members, many of whom are veterans themselves, slammed President Biden over the weekend for “politicizing” the Department of Veterans Affairs after the agency put out an April 21 press release claiming the debt bill would cut funding for veterans’ programs by 22%.
“In my nine years as a member of Congress, I have never seen the use of an agency that is so vitally important to so many people be used as a political hammer, to deliver a message that is false so that it would stir people up to cause our veterans to be used as pawns in a political game,” Rep. Mike Bost (R-Ill.), who chairs the House Veterans Affairs’ Committee, said on a Sunday conference call.
The Limit, Save, Grow Act, which passed the House along party lines April 26, would increase the federal debt ceiling by $1.5 trillion or suspend it until March 31, 2024, whichever comes first.
It would also reduce non-defense discretionary spending to fiscal year 2022 levels and limit the growth of future expenditures to 1% annually over the next 10 years — though no agencies are singled out for spending cuts.
They’re shamelessly lying about veterans benefits and politicizing the VA to do so,” House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik (R-NY) said of the Biden administration. “There is not a single line, not a single page in this bill that Democrats can point to that cuts veterans’ benefits.”
Stefanik added that similar negotiations in 2011 between House Republicans and the Obama White House included no cuts to veterans’ benefits.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) and Bost have all pledged to retain the full range of veterans’ benefits in any final version of a debt ceiling bill.
“The speaker himself has said, ‘We’re protecting veterans.’ Mike Bost, the chairman of the Veterans Affairs Committee, is a veteran himself,” Scalise said Sunday on ABC News’ “This Week.”
“I’ll tell you as the majority leader, I will not bring a bill to the floor of the House — even if President Biden wants it — I will not bring a bill that cuts our veterans.”
Bost said Sunday he had spoken with VA Secretary Denis McDonough earlier in the day, but had “to calm down” first.
“I said, ‘Well, I understand that probably your boss told you to do that,’” added Bost, referring to pressure from the Biden White House. “But still it shouldn’t have been done.”

Bost claimed that Republicans were not cutting veterans’ benefits even as the text of their bill to raise the nation’s debt ceiling would roll back all discretionary spending.
No language in the House-passed Limit, Save, Grow Act, was included to specifically protect it does include a specific budget rescission for unspent COVID-19 relief funds. That translates to $2 billion coming from the VA.
Although Congress could restore that money in the future, it would result in a reduction in spending for veterans as the proposal stands.House Republicans like Bost have said repeatedly they intend to protect this key constituency. But so far, such protections are not evident on paper.
We rate Bost's statement as Mostly False.

Republicans Push Back
On ABC’s “This Week” on April 30, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, who was interviewed after Coons, disagreed with the claim about cuts to services for veterans.
“We talk about protecting veterans,” Scalise said. “We’ve heard this lie over and over again. The speaker himself has said we’re protecting veterans. My boss, the chairman of the Veterans Affairs Committee, is a veteran himself. The only person talking about cutting veterans’ benefits is Joe Biden. And I’ll tell you, as the majority leader, I will not bring a bill to the floor of the House, even if President Biden wants it, I will not bring a bill that cuts our veterans.”
In an April 21 statement released before the vote on the GOP bill, Rep. Mike Bost, the veterans committee chairman whom Scalise mentioned, said Democrats had “spread false claims” about House Republicans trying to cut veterans’ benefits.
“This commonsense bill will grow the economy and save American taxpayers money, all while protecting veterans’ benefits, Social Security, and Medicare,” he said. “Republicans have always prioritized veterans in our spending to ensure veterans have access to the care, benefits, and services they have earned, and as the Chairman of this Committee, that is my number one priority. Anyone who questions our commitment to the men and women who have served should find new talking points.”
In an email to FactCheck.org, Chad Gilmartin, deputy spokesman for House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, said, “Democrats should point to where in the bill it says any of the claims that they make.”
As we said, the text of the bill does not specify which parts of the discretionary budget would be cut — but it also does not say which parts would be shielded from future cuts, which is a point the White House made to us.
“Congressional Republicans could have protected veterans’ medical care” in the bill “but they chose not to — which is why 24 veterans organizations opposed this bill,” a White House spokesperson said in an emailed statement.
We would note that the bill also does not state that defense spending will be spared. However, Democrats seemingly have accepted Republican assurances that it would be, while now dismissing similar assurances that funding for veterans also would not be cut.
But if Republicans were to exclude defense and veterans’ health care from cuts, as they say they would do, that means other discretionary programs would have to be cut by larger percentages.
“If they protect both defense and veterans’ health care from cuts, then all other non-defense discretionary programs would have to be cut 33 percent in 2024 and 59 percent in 2025,” the left-leaning Center on Budget and Policy Priorities estimated in an April 24 analysis.
Discretionary funding also pays for programs for homeland security, transportation, education, housing, social services and more.
Ultimately, specific spending cuts, or exemptions from those cuts, would be addressed during the regular appropriations process — if the GOP bill somehow became law.

So who is advocating that is what they deserved-'just a song? What is that point?
And military veterans do receive far more than just a song.
And Bradley avoided talking about most of what he encountered, not just the flag raising. The flag raising was and is an inspirational symbol of World War II and our country as is the National Anthem a symbol of our country.
And you just make a half ass smart comment about talking to the Marines. I have talked to countless Marines the great majority who are patriotic. You should try it.

Republicans Push Back
On ABC’s “This Week” on April 30, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, who was interviewed after Coons, disagreed with the claim about cuts to services for veterans.
This doesn't support your argument, fwiw.
Basically, the House GOP has put forth a bill that proposes cuts in ALL discretionary spending. VA funding comes from discretionary funding. Hence, they've put forth a bill that proposes cuts to VA funding.
They're essentially telling you, "Don't believe what we put in writing. Believe what we're telling you instead. Trust us."
If you wish to take them at their word, knowing their solid record of honesty and integrity, good for you.
But based on what they put in writing, they're proposing VA cuts.

What do you mean by exceptionalism? If you mean the strongest and wealthiest nation to exist over the last few hundred years, then yeah. We have benefitted greatly from our geography in that regard.
But if you mean some sort predestination or such nonsense…
are you serious? Damn, Dane Cty just oozes out of you. Exceptionalism. We are free. We are a beacon of light to a dark world. We, as Americans, can pursue our dreams. All, in America, can pursue their dreams. Dream big and achieve! We have the right to peaceful protest without repercussion. Defend the weak. Justice. Law. Liberty. Add-in what Goose opined prior. I could go on, and on.
I mean, what’s up? Are you contrarian by nature? Wait, don’t answer that.

The Obama administration gutted the military. Decimated it, in fact. It was properly funded and rebuilt, 2016-20. Alas, Biden underfunds the military! And you speak of mendacity? The current White House is in office based on mendacity. That pesky 1023 form needs to be released. I’m sure you agree. Yes?

We should cover everyone's healthcare. Those that serve and aren't dishonorably discharged should be guaranteed housing. Should be guaranteed a job as well (whether they take that job is up to them).
Why not for everyone?
Socialism? Or FDR platform?

We claim these as our aspirations but there are countless examples of us not reaching them. And there are many who are actually fine with that.
And I’d “contrarian” means “challenging your brainwashed mind” then yes…I’m contrarian.

Facts don't matter to people that have created an alternative universe for themselves where whatever they want to be true suddenly is true to them.

Yes indeed. Forgot that all the facts in the article can be cross checked, budgets can be looked up and verified, statements can be weighed objectively. Nope! It must not be true because fact-checkers are all biased and they don't agree with what you want to be true.
Quite a bubble where any fact can be dismissed because it doesn't align with your alternative universe.

Exactly, nowhere in the bill does it state that veteran's benefits will be cut. But others want to believe that

It doesn't say that defense spending wont be cut, but the Dems are taking their word for that. Not sure why they are not taking their word for the VA issue. Maybe because President Biden jumped the gun and thought he had a "Gotcha!" moment. The Republicans are on record stating no VA cuts. If for some reason there is, they will be called out, especially during the next election.
Nowhere in the bill does it state cuts across the board. During appropriations is where it will be decided where the cuts comefrom.

It literally calls for spending to be rolled back to 2022 levels.
