Indiana (Marquette) Media Guide
« on: December 02, 2009, 10:39:35 PM »
People usually ask what Indiana has to do with Marquette.  Well the Indiana media guide seems to have more information about the 2003 Final Four than Marquette's media guide has.

Check out page 40 (7 of 28) for team photos and quotes from the Marquette Hall of Fame ceremony.

It will be interesting to see if Wesley will be added to that list next year.

IU needs someone to proof read that Media guide, I notice a few errors/typos.  Also, did they realize Crean was sub .500 versus the Big Ten before they hired him?

That's this year's guide, so it includes all the losses from last year on that "career against by school" list.

I realize that - but 3-8 versus Wisconsin, 0-4 vs Minnesota, 0-3 vs Michigan St didnt' all come from last year.

Ya, a lot of typos in there, like oh I don't know, putting the 2002-03 season as the 2004-05 season. That was a big season if I recall correctly.
Also, what do people think about Crean taking credit for the Michigan St. players in the NBA? Something tells me players like Mo Pete and Cleaves didn't go to MSU b/c of Crean. I'm thinking Izzo had more to do with that, but I could be wrong.

I was actually thinking the same thing. My guess is they are players he recruited, but I'm not sure.

I know a lot of coaches do it, but I think having all those pages dedicated to one person is just unseemly. Do we really need to see a picture of the head coach and Fuzzy Zoeller, who last won a significant golf tournament 25 years ago? (I like Fuzzy, by the way). But is that something for recruits or is it simply an ego boost to the coach? Again, I'm not specifically talking about Crean, but those media guides are out of control. I know they're used for recruiting purposes...but c'mon. Are recruits going to read all that nonsense?

I liked the 2 full pages of "celebrity" testimonials.  Because who wouldn't want to know that Crean would be an excellent linebacker coach.

Side note, do the players pictured: Wade, Diener, Cleeves, etc need to consent to having their "image or likeness" used in a media guide?  If so, then I guess they don't care if he rides their coattails.

From memory

He was 0-1 vs MSU, 0-2 vs Minnesota, 1-0 vs Indiana, 3-6 vs Wisconsin

They probably hired him for his record against Big East teams (also from memory)

Pitt  4-3
Louisville 8-10
Notre Dame 5-3
DePaul 12-4
UCONN 2-2
Cincinnati 6-7
G'town 1-3
Providence 3-1
Rutgers 3-1
St. John's 4-0
Seton Hall 5-0
South Florida 3-0
Syracuse 0-2
Villanova 3-1
West Virginia 2-1

These are off memory and I'm sure I missed a few

And what if they provided that consent, would it be riding the coattails?

To an extent, yes I would think so.  It is not like it is unique to Tom, all coaches do it.  You would be stupid not to try and capitalize on the success of your past players who made the leap.  I was simply wondering if they had to provide consent to have their picture used.

Great question, I doubt they have to.  I believe NCAA athletes sign away their consent of image likeness for these types of things, but I don't recall.

I suspect you're probably right, but I wonder if that applies for all schools.  If Wade and Diener signed something so that Marquette could use their images, I wonder if that automatically gives Indiana the right to use their images just because Crean went there.

While I don't really like seeing MU players in the IU media guide, I don't think this is a "new" practice for coaches around the country.

Also, in this specific case, he's kind of damned if he does, damned if he doesn't. If he puts the players in the media guide, some MU fans complain. If he doesn't put them in, somebody would inevitably say "Hey Tom, YOU didn't go to the Final 4, Wade, Deiner and Novak got you there, why do you only put your name down? What an egomaniac."
