Best Songs/Albums ever! (AKA I hate the Dave Matthews Band)
« on: March 10, 2008, 04:01:06 PM »
I light of some of the music discussion in another thread, I though I would take a more constructive/less snarky approach and open a forum for discussion of some of the best music ever recorded -- understanding of course it is nearly impossible for me to come up with a short list, let alone rank them, but I'll list a few favorites in no particular order...

Albums:

Replacements - Pleased to Meet Me
GnR - Appetite for Destruction
Rolling Stones - Let it Bleed
Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin II
Social Distortion - Social Distortion
Black Crowes - Shake Your Money Maker

Songs:

Tony Bennett - I left my Heart in SF
Replacements - Can't Hardly Wait
Led Zeppelin - Rock n' Roll
Big Star - September Gurls
The Who - The Seeker
Elvis Presley- If I can Dream
Pearl Jam - Better Man
Patsy Cline - Stand by Your Man
Public Enemy - Don't Believe the Hype

Bands/Artists:

The Replacements
Rolling Stones
Elvis

Alright, not too happy with these and I have to go...might have to come back for some editing.

Slightly OT, but for all the lists being made .. ever try http://www.pandora.com ?  Enter a few songs, albums or artists, and Pandora will start streaming songs that match your taste.  About a quarter of the time, it'll play the songs/artists you entered, the other times playing "matching" artists/songs.

Pretty cool.  Free.  Very quick to set up.

heheheheh.....that was a transcendent musical (closing in June after a 12 yr run btw) with a monster cast that will go down as one of the greatest in Broadway history (Taye Diggs, Idina Menzel, Jesse L. Martin, Adam Pascal, and Anthony Rapp).  Add in Jonathan Larson's tragic death just hours before it opens -- wow, that was a great storyline in its day.  The music still holds up.

OK, I'm off the Broadway kick  ;)

Saw them at the first Lollapalooza in Grant Park and thought they were the highlight of the weekend.  Also had the opportunity to see them at the Chicago Theater but the guy I was getting tickets through reniged last minute.  I just about crapped my pants in dissapointment.

Seems to be a lot of the same tastes in some of these posts.  Just curious how old some of you are?  I am 30.

I've yet to see that.
I have, however, seen the Lips on about a half-dozen occasions, the first being at the old MU Union back around 1989 (yeah, I'm old). Fantastic show, but they were a different band then. No less great, but different.
Anyhow, they're always a ton of fun live, so I highly recommend you check them out at your earliest convenience.

Also worth viewing: "The Fearless Freaks", a documentary about the band.
