So what is the real story behind "Freeway"
« on: May 31, 2009, 09:17:26 PM »
We have all heard the legend about how he was supposedly hit by a Milwaukee County bus and therefore elected to settle with the county for a lifetime supply of local sports tickets, but what is the REAL story here?

that is the same story I heard.  He seems to be at every sporting event I have ever attended.

How old is he?  and what did he do before the "incident"?

I don't think he has aged since I met back at Brewer game in 1996.  Maybe he is a Highlander.

I think Freeway has gotta be around 50.  He was already hanging around campus in the early '80's when I was there.  The legend that I have heard had him getting hit by a MU Public Safety van, not a county bus.  The rest of the story is the same.
The shaka sign, sometimes known as "hang loose", is a gesture of friendly intent often associated with Hawaii and surf culture.

The wiki knows all.

http://wiki.muscoop.com/doku.php/freeway/start?s=freeway

edit:  Apparently not "all."  The wiki doesn't know the true story behind the urban legend either.  Must be a mystery!

I don't know the true story other than what has already been posted.

But nothing is more amusing, yet more annoying than having Freeway sit next to you during a game. Especially when MU is losing.

I heard Mike's parents were killed in auto accident and he became obsessed with watching the traffic. I think Mike is roughly 50 years old. I first met him in 1981.

Ok, Freeway story time!

Sources tell me that Freeway HATES the NHL and nothing can get him to go away faster than asking him an NHL question.

I was standing in line for a beer at the BC in 2003 and Freeway came up to me and yelled, "Who's gonna guard big Marvin Stone?"  I flatly replied, "Robert Jackson, he's our 5."  Freeway just turned around and walked away.

"Offense, offense!!"

Great Freeway impressions.  I met him in 1989 and I am still convinced there is more than one of them.  I remember one day no matter where I was (downtown, near campus bar, Marquette game, etc.) he was there.  The man is omni-present.

With Freeway as part of my six degrees of separation, I have no doubt that I am six degrees removed from at least every Midwesterner in the country.

I heard he also drives the big Jesus station wagon with the loudspeakers on top.

Omg... Freeway is Jesus! :o

Footprints in the Beer

One night I dreamed I was walking along 4th Street with Freeway.
Many scenes from my life flashed across the sky.
In each scene I noticed footprints in the beer.
Sometimes there were two sets of footprints,
other times there were one set of footprints.

This bothered me because I noticed
that during the low periods of my life,
when I was suffering from
anguish, sorrow or defeat,
I could see only one set of footprints.

So I said to Freeway,
“You promised me Freeway,
that if I followed you,
you would walk with me always.
But I have noticed that during the most trying periods of my life
there have only been one set of footprints in the beer.
Why, when I needed you most, you have not been there for me?”

Freeway replied,
“The times when you have seen only one set of footprints in the beer,
is when I carried you.”

Its interesting that this continues to be a mystery......maybe he really did get hit by a milwaukee county bus and settle for a lifetime supply of Milwaukee sports teams tickets.

A quick google search of Mike McCarter Milwaukee reveals the following...

He is on Twitter.
He is on facebook.
He is on Myspace.
He wonders...Q: Michael McCarter, Milwaukee, Wisconsin - Now that they get the 10th pick in the draft, what do they need to be a playoff team and bring a championship calliber back to Milwaukee? Can they win it all in the very near future or down the road? How many mvp's have the Buck won in their career years? Can this team win it all with the current core? I want to know.

Yeah, thanks for pointing that out.  One of his more recent tweets: "I don't think I wiped good enough. I wish that bush had bigger leaves."

I always thought he got a lot of tickets out of Goolsby's. It seemed that he always showed up late for games in the mid 80's.

His mom actually died this past year.  How do I know this??  Well as a bouncer during my college years I made the fatal mistake of talking to him.  He would never leave me alone, and still to this day if he sees me I can't get rid of him.  My friend as a joke gave him my number, and he calls or texts me at least once a week.  I have him in my phone as "do not answer."  This began over 15 years ago..

A couple of Freeway moments:

1.   A couple of years ago I came in late to the BC from Chicago and hit the bathroom in a hurry before the tip.  Freeway is in the bathroom sink area telling me:  "YOU MISSED THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER....BEST SINGER YET...UNBELIEVABLE VOICE".  I could not get out of there fast enough.

2.  Last year he got a ticket right behind me.  The entire game he read scores off the sports ticker in the corner like it was play-by-play.  When things calmed down I would ask out loud "what is going on with UCONN today" and Freeway would come to life and start up again.

I think his father was/is a minister...

A couple years ago I was listening to Homer and McIllvaine doing a game... and Homer goes, 'oh, there's Freeway'.. and Mac said something like, 'nowadays, it's more like a 4 (or maybe 6?) lane highway'

Thanks for ruining summer, Canada.

Those are definitely all fake accounts.  If you had taken a look at his Facebook page you would have realized that all of his biographical information was taken straight from the muscoop wiki :p

I figured that when I looked at the Twitter postings.

Think the Bucks question is fake as well? I want to think it is real, but I think 75% of the people on this board would know how to word a question (or 5) to make it look like Freeway.
