1. Turnovers, turnovers, turnovers. Dear lord. Today, MU needed to be stronger with the ball and stronger mentally. Some really dumb plays and some really careless plays.
2. Seton Hall is physically stronger than MU. And more physical. And always going for the poke away.
3. Congratulations to Sam on 1000 points.
4. I will say it again.... Theo John is a bad man.
5. Sacar actually showed his worth today. Solid offensively, solid on a Powell.
6. 0 made 3's in the second half. I would have taken any bet in the world that would have predicted that number.
7. MU was strong defensively.
8. Seton Hall goes zone for the first time all day as a change up and Sacar and Joey team up on a great improvisational play.
9. Free throws matta (?) Make a good percentage, but miss the ones that give Seton Hall the chance to win or force overtime.
10. Wojo chose to foul up 3. Cooley didn't. A mark in the column for fouling up 3.
11. Ugly, brutal win. Beats the hell out of a brutal, ugly loss. Great work. Next!

12. FTs Matter.

12. FTs Matter.
wasn’t that No. 9?
-
wasn’t that No. 9?
Honestly missed it (buries my head in shame). But it's worth being on there twice.
-
Big double double for Theo.
-
The Hall is tough and physical, but we came through. Big win, and great takes Tower especially #1.
-
13. We beat ourselves and still won.
-
Wojo was awesome today
-
I’m not sure if the foul at the end was planned. If it was I think it may have happened earlier.
-
Theo is the best defensive 5 we have had in a long time. His presence alone helps us out a LOT.
TOs. Ug. Seemed like 90% of them were unforced
13. Let's hope Morrow's injury isn't serious.
-
Love Theo so, so much. Would probably hate him if he was on any other team though.
That Cale dude was doing his best Dougie McFlopper impression. Glad Theo pretty much told him to sit down.
-
13. We beat ourselves and still won.
Nailed it.
-
I’m not sure if the foul at the end was planned. If it was I think it may have happened earlier.
That was definitely planned and intentional
-
Chartonay (sp?) must’ve been out at the ‘Lanche last night
-
These guys are going to be tough on the road. Nice win.
My additions:
12. Buy Jamal Cain some stick-em
13. Howard blocked about 5 times? Did someone crack the magic code?
14. Excellent D by Sacar
15. Don't know why we didn't see Bailey because Cain was horrible
-
13. We beat ourselves and still won.
This.
-
12. FTs Matter.
Sigh.
For the bajillionth time. FTsNoMatta is short for "Team FT% matters very little in terms of winning a basketball game."
Take this game for example. We shot 83% from the line which is above our average of 75%. If we shot our average of 75% we would have made two less FTs and still won the game.
What mattered a helluva lot more was that we got to the line 24 times versus 9 for them.
-
Some on here have suggested that Willard can't coach and that Seton Hall would be bad this season. Care to reassess?
-
Props to the Pirates. After loosing their senior class last season to come back and be so competitive is even surprising the Pirate fan base here in Jersey.
-
Love seeing us be able to win in a slugfest, and when Markus isn't in Superman mode. Did what we had to do, holding serve at home against a lesser opponent.
Big props to Theo John today. Bid difference-maker out there once again.
-
That felt like a true big east basketball game! Glad we came out on the right side of it.
HOWEVER, The refs gave us a gift by now calling (howard?) for a foul on the 3 point shot.
-
0 for 9 from three in second half.
Shot 30% overall in second half.
SHU had 19 fouls, MU had 12. SHU was 6 for 9 and MU was 20-24 from the line. 16 point differential.
20 turnovers and the 4 on Joe C. and 3 on Cain were well, not good.
Still win, thats two games in a row, could have gone the other direction.
Hope Morrow heals up soon.
-
We got a huge gift when the ref didn't call a foul on Markus on the Seton three point attempt near the end. Forgot what Seton player it was. Replay showed Markus hit him on the forearm. I think we got some home cooking today from the Refs. Won't get that on the road.
-

All around the Big East, teams, coaches, and fans are looking at Theo and saying 'bleep. That bleeping bleeper is only a bleeping sophomore and is only bleeping going to bleeping stronger and bleeping meaner around the bleeping basket. Bleepity bleep bleep.'
-
We gave up a lot of offensive rebounds today. Noticeable because we have been so good at limiting those this year.
I would love to see us play well for large percentages of the game as the season wears on.
Cain and Chartouny were really bad today, I thought. John and Anim were very good. Everyone else somewhere in between.
If Sam gets it going like last year we are going to be awfully good. He and Joey missed many high percentage 3s today. SHU reminded me a bit of SJU. Very athletic, made it very hard on Markus.
-

Timeout huddle @creighton demonstrated this when McDermott told his guys not to even go inside and challenge theo.
But it was with less swearing
-
13. We beat ourselves and still won.
exactly. Almost gave it away. Glad we could pull it out at the end.
-

Yep. Heard McDermott say in the In the Huddle segment - Don't challenge the monster. Come to jump stop, pivot, pass out of the lane after forcing help.
Theo's rim protection and post defense are a HUGE asset to the team and the likes of which we haven't had in a LONG time. Jae was a great defender, physical, but nowhere near the rim protector Theo is.
Theo is Faisal Abraham 2.0, but even taller and more physical. Been 20+ years since we've had a player like Theo.
-

No we didn’t.
Refs let them play all game, that benefited the SHU physicality.
Cain was mugged twice. Bang bang charges went on us. We were banged on numerous defensive rebounds.
Powell had a pretty weak leg kick out called on Markus in the 1H.
Refs mostly let them play. There wasn’t home cooking.
-

No kidding. He will be a force by his senior season.
And, I think as refs continue to get used to him, his size, and strength, he won't get called for as many bogus fouls, which will help him stay on the floor more.
-
I thought this was a tough game for MU coming from the emotional high of the Creighton game. Glad to see the boys tough it out and win this one. It will pay off down the stretch as the games get won by the mentally tough.

Exactly. The missed wide open looks in the first half (Sam 2or 3 and Markus) when SH was turning it over repeatedly
and a 12 pt lead should have been 20, and the many wide open looks in the second half made it a much closer game than it needed to be even with all the TOs. Guys are going to miss shots, but I thought we did a good job finding wide open looks and just didn’t convert. I thought Markus did a good job distributing for the most part when bogged down.

Hmmmmm...."We beat ourselves?" Inquiring minds want to know more.

Great summary, nice amplification of some of tower's points. I'll throw out a few, too:
++ If I'm not mistaken, this victory (and the previous 2) eliminates the whole "Wojo can't get 3 straight Big East wins" angle for his critics. I thought he coached an excellent game today -- some nice X's and O's, a good call to foul at the end rather than take a chance on SH shooting a 3, and most importantly he got the guys settled down and re-focused after we gave up the lead. We didn't have Red Hot Markus to bail us out today -- heck, in the second half, we didn't have red-hot anybody -- but still found a way to win against an opponent that has been a tough out for nearly every team they've played.
++ Sacar had 14 points (including two 3s), 2 steals, the assist on the game's most important basket, and made Powell work hard all game long (and held Powell below his scoring average). This just 6 days after Sacar had 20 pts, 7 rebs against Xavier. But Sand-Knit says Sacar is the worst player in the history of mankind ... or at least the worst since he said Luke was the worst player in the history of mankind. So I guess Sacar really must suck.
++ It was ugly at times (OK, much of the time), but I think it says a lot about the guys' mental toughness to be able to win a game like this. I'm 98.6% sure that we lose this game last season.
++ We can win games with our D now. As others have said ... Theo is a difference-maker.
++ Jeezus ... I'm not sure JC and JC can play any worse than they did today, but they've given us some good games this season and I have confidence that they'll contribute the rest of the way. I liked how Wojo gave each of them a couple of chances before giving them permanent pine.
++ Wonder why Bailey didn't play at all, given the JC's struggles.
++ I didn't think we really got much home cooking from the refs, even though I agree Markus fouled the 3-point shooter on that late attempt. Cain was mugged, the charge call on Markus was horrendous, and SH was allowed to climb up our backs on the glass all game. I was pleasantly surprised they called the late shove to send Theo to the line.
++ Was wondering where Morrow was, because he played pretty well early on. I hope it's not serious. Definitely could use him against Georgetown.
++ Methinks we might be a top-15 team now, my friends!
-
Sigh.
For the bajillionth time. FTsNoMatta is short for "Team FT% matters very little in terms of winning a basketball game."
I disagree (or maybe just semantics?). To me it is macro vs. micro.
Over the course of the season (or even most games), FT NO matta. Over the last couple minutes of a close game, they often matter more than any other factor.

Only if we are capable of not turning the ball over. It seems to be our only weakness as a team.

I was speaking literally of the next rankings, not about whether we actually are the 15th best team in the nation right now.
We certainly have the ingredients to be a top-15 (or better) team: great shooting, toughness, defensive ability, rebounding, coaching, versatility, depth, etc. Just gotta put most of those areas together with a little more consistency -- and yes, we have to take care of the basketball.
The good news is we still have 2 months to get there. The better news is that our "teaching moments" are coming in games we're winning despite our flaws. Much, much, MUCH better feeling to teach after wins than after losses!

Paid Attendance- 17,180.
Crowds have been excellent this season. People coming out in huge numbers. That said, Marquette look good in the 1st half. Had it's problems scoring in the 2nd half. We as a crowd need to bring it! I lost my voice in the final 7 minutes getting people to their feet for defense of stops. Wojo felt the same as he was himself trying to get the crowd going. I hope we are not taking winning at Fiserv Forum for granted.
-
Another fun game. Sure, we were sloppy at times. But to win a close game where Marcus is shut out over the last 6 minutes was outstanding and exciting.
Good teams win this kind of game.
-
Terrible game for the guys. Take the W and run.

At least now Milwaukee has something to be excited about to get them through the winter.
-

Agree. And they let a ton of calls go where we were fouled.
-
Fun game . Seton Hall is a high quality and very physical team and MU definitely worked hard to earn the victory. Kudos to the players and coaches on a job well done. Looking forward to the rematch on the road should be very hard fought.
-
ALL wins are good wins. Carolina lost by 21 at home today.

I'll be at the next 2 home games (as I know I've mentioned before). Can't wait to get my first look at our new place, and my first in-person look at our Warriors this season. I won't take it for granted!
ALL wins are good wins. Carolina lost by 21 at home today.
Yep, yep, yep.

I thought the refs made bad calls both ways. Markus fouled the 3 point shooter at the end but did not foul Powell on the 3 point leg kick that the refs called. The charge calls on Markus and Sam (which wiped out a bucket) were both terrible calls (though Markus probably travels if the charge isn't called anyways). The travel they did call early in the 2nd half on Markus where the defender flopped and nothing was called, forcing Markus's feet to slide, was a blocking foul on the defender.
These things tend to even out over the course of a game.
-
Some on here have suggested that Willard can't coach and that Seton Hall would be bad this season. Care to reassess?
Guilty in thinking Hall would be poor this year after graduating that senior class. Willard has them playing very hard, which makes up for some of their talent deficiencies.
-
++ Wonder why Bailey didn't play at all, given the JC's struggles.
He was pulled I think after Wojo was unhappy with team defensive rebounding effort on a long SH possession.
Also, many have correctly noted how bad of a man Mr. John is. He challenged early for every single rebound it seemed. And he altered many many more shots than he blocked. B-East.
-
The Crowd was very weak imo. Outside of the last few minutes in the game the crowd was pretty quiet. Unlike the Buffalo and Wisconsin game where every stop/made shot the roof was coming off. Maybe because they were not ranked but this was my 4th game of the year (K-State, Buffalo and Wisconsin) and it was the weakest as far as crowd noise out of all.
-
Wojo was awesome today
Agreed. I love how he’s settled in and doesn’t appear to get rattled under 8 minutes.
-

I brought this up early on. The attendance has been outstanding this year! Marquette was struggling in the 2nd half after looking pretty solid in the 1st half. I lost my voice yelling at the crowd and waving to finally get them going! We can't take winning for granted at Fiserv Forum. Student body coming back will help the cause.

Poor shooting, lots of turnovers, and timeouts at inconvenient times really kill the vibe in the arena. It would have been loud if the game had a better flow to it. Creighton will be a good atmosphere when they come here.
-
The bench with a whopping two points. I get Ed got hurt, but that is pretty brutal.
I noticed that Seton Hall, like MU, used 5 players from the bench. Also got only 2 points from their bench. Strikingly bad for both teams.

I've been to so many rock fight games over the years, so flow has nothing to do with it. 7 mintues left needs to be a sign of energy from crowd when the team is trailing.

Missed your post earlier but Yes I saw Wojo on multiple occasions swinning his arms trying to get the crowd to get loud when Seton hall was taking the ball up court. As many said maybe it was the flow of the game that killed the vibe. Either way it was a great grind it out win. Hopefully we shoot the 3 ball better on Tueday.
-

I don’t disagree. The UW game had great energy during the 12-8 min mark and I’m not sure there were any field goals made during that time. I do think the opponent makes a difference and this is supposed to be a “down” seton hall even though they are playing well this season.
-
Also need to give props to McKnight from S.H. He shout down Howard pretty good in the second half. It was the rest of the team that stepped up when Howard was locked down.
-
The crowds are always going to be louder on Friday and Saturday nights or late afternoon games because of one thing: beer. Don't underestimate the effects of boozing it up before and during a weekend night game when it comes to crowd noise.
-
Some on here have suggested that Willard can't coach and that Seton Hall would be bad this season. Care to reassess?
I’ve never said he can’t coach.....but I’m not sold. And nothing that he did today made me change my mind. They battled. Does this make Willard something other than what we’ve seen the last several years?

After the goaltending on Theo, the tv audio caught Theo essentially saying, "How'd you like that, Beotch?"

I was yelling at the TV, "Shut up!" The last thing we needed was a technical there.

When's the last time we had a dude as bad as Theo? Like the reason he's there is to talk sh!t, intimidate you, and attempt to kill you if you try and drive to the basket.
As much as I wanna say Jae, he's not really close. Haven't had a player like that since I started paying attention to MU.

I didnt sit and screamed my head off. arena was fine when we needed it. #opaquecupseverywhere
-
I was yelling at the TV, "Shut up!" The last thing we needed was a technical there.
I was surprised we didn't get a technical and I couldn't hear any of the audio. Another play that had me nervous was when SHU was fouled on a three and Theo swatted away the shot right as it got below the rim. It wasn't close to going in, but it looked like one that could've been called goaltending anyway, especially with Big East refs this year.
-
The bench with a whopping two points. I get Ed got hurt, but that is pretty brutal.
Yikes. Cain and Bailey are really hard to watch at times. Cain in particular does at least one boneheaded thing a game i.e. dribble the ball off his leg or catch the ball with a foot on the baseline. He does some of the little things well but man there are times he looks like he’s only been playing basketball for two years
-

Soft, according to Johnnies fans.

No. that was an incredibly stupid play by Theo. No reason to move into the SH player. He has to be smarter than that, especially with Morrow out for a bit.

IDK young Skywalker and I'm sure someone will come up with one but I'll throw out Maurice Lucas for ya; the baddest MU baller ever.
-
Theo is a beast who has the potential to become a really good player. I would be happy if he talked a little less sh!t and let his play speak for itself. Putting him in a team picture with Maurice or Jae is premature at best.
-
IDK young Skywalker and I'm sure someone will come up with one but I'll throw out Maurice Lucas for ya; the baddest MU baller ever.
I've been watching MU a long time and I think ML is a good comparison. Been a while since we had a player like Theo.
One thing that I am struck by is how much he has improved. Think about how far he has come non conference last year, conference last year, non conference this year......If continues to improve like he has we will be talking about bad, bad Theo John(just like Leroy Brown) for a long time.
His presence is underestimated by other teams. SJU fans talking about him being soft is just them whistling in the dark.....
Ring Out Ahoya....Beat GU!

Theo is developing as you might expect an athletic 3 star big to develop. JB was making Faisal Abraham comps when he signed. He has to foul less. And save them for fouls around the basket, not silly fouls handing the ball off to a guard. Particularly with Morrow injured. Matt is an experienced Big East center, but there is a reason he is now the third string center. The ability to guard in space. So, Theo needs to take the next step in his development and improve his ability to be physical without fouling.

Agreed.
He has gotten much better at this as a sophomore than he was as a freshman, and I like to think he will be much better as a junior.

That has always been his issue, but I think his fractured/separated toe has left him with even less lateral mobility. I think a healthy/seasoned Ike would make Matt 4th string.

Was just at Evanston the other night. His picture was right above the entrance to the gym.

Who had the toddler daughter they showed hundreds of times on the Jumbotron in the cheerleader outfit dancing around? Adorable, and definitely knew when the camera was on her!

Not sure, but I did see little Microbrew up there at least once!

Sacar has shown his worth a lot this year. One of the unsung heroes. Great at getting to the basket and finishing. Solid on D and can rebound/make some passes. He's a big part of this team's success.

Played great 2 of the last 3 games. And he was fine in the other, just didn't score as much.

I know... just wanted to check the stats out of curiosity. I went to school with Faisal... first time I saw Theo I thought the same thing I did when I first stood next to Faisal.. "damn, this dude is built" (nh)
Theo's shot blocking has been better earlier than I thought it would... great to have him on the squad.

Damn old man, I barely remember even watching Faisal play.

geezus man, now that wojo has us playing better "d", can he now hire someone to work on dribbling and passing? 20 turnovers is about 10 too many!! at that rate, the fat lady could have been singin the "jump around song bouncin with the leapin lawyer

That reminds me of a question I have had about college basketball in the past concerning players who have deficiencies in certain areas: Is there such a thing as "consultant" coaches that specialize in super-targeted areas like ball-handling or free throws? And if so, are college programs allowed to bring people like that to work with a particular player?

Why do you continue to do this when you know it is offensive to LGBTQ members on this site?

He was a gem when I worked in the felt. His dad, as well (RIP). Nice kid, amazing work ethic and teammate. Chose Marquette because he liked our practice shorts. Lol. At least that is what he told the staff.

Bob Lackey The Black Swan
10-4 Brother Herman.
Lucas was an absolute nice guy compared to Lackey. Lcakey was something else and if not my favorite Warrior of all time, damn close to being my favorite. Very colorful character.

They have high opinions of themselves:
"And Myles Powell (21 points, 9 rebounds) was the best player on the floor (again). They should be favored in the returning meeting March 6, and if they meet again on a neutral floor."
-
Not necessarily wrong. I agree they will be favored at home.

This is how they prove it. Have a better BE record than MU at the end...and beat MU soundly at their place. But until then, 1-0 Marquette.

Robert Jackson ate opposing teams' puppy dogs for lunch and washed them down with the players' tears. A bad bad man.
