2nd Half Student Shot
« on: February 18, 2009, 12:46:08 PM »
Does anyone else think its pathetic on Marquette's behalf that there is no longer a three point shot to win a semester of tution? Only the half court shot for the RV.

I know someone made the 3pointer a few weeks back to win the tution (on a side note; i guess the kids dad is a millionaire dentist), but still why doesn't Marquette step up and allow someone to hit another 3 pointer?

Its just a little discouraging that MU is so cheap regarding this, its nice to have this 2 minute event during a TO and now they only allow the student one shot from half court.

I guess it doesn't bother me that they are not offering free tuition since someone already hit it as they've done that forever, and I have no idea where that scholarship money is coming from.  However, I am irked by that the announcer apparently didn't get the memo that it's not a prize anymore - Stop announcing something you're not offering.

I don't believe it's Marquette's fault as they aren't the ones paying for the tuition.  Isn't it called the Pepsi Tuition shot?  I thought Pepsi paid for it.

Was that the reason they didn't do the 3point shot because "it's over for the year" or because the SHU huddle was right under the basket, and they didn't want to disturb the huddle?

.. We were joking, too, that a student who wins the RV .. wtf are they going to do with that?

I'd imagine the RV company is PRAYING for someone to hit a shot, just to move one of their beasts off the lot in this economy.

Typically promotional "contests" like that are covered by an insurance policy. In all likelihood, the insurance policy is only good for one "made" shot a year. Once a shot is made, the contest is over for the year.

The RV company is owned by former Marquette track&field shotputter, MU booster, and all-around good guy Marcus Lemonis. The company was doing very well for a while. I'd imagine between gas prices last summer and the current economy it is tough to move an RV, but we should all wish Marcus the best. He has done a lot for MU.

I thought that now if you make the half court shot you can either have an RV or Tuition. I could be wrong. Also, I am pissed this wasn't around when I was there. I was already on a full ride - so could I just have asked for the cash?  ?-(

Is it just me or do you yell to the student to take a running start when going for the half court shot, I'm amazed when I see them shoot it like they are within 15 feet...

You can't take cash and if you had other MU scholarships they tried to deduct that amount from the prize.
The money comes from the company and I don't begrudge them only giving one per year.
What happened to the Pepsi challenge though?  That was a different contest.

I can't believe he got it as close as he did seeing as though the jersey he was wearing was about 3 sizes too small.

Maybe you should ask Gwaki about that.

None of this compares to the contest they had a few years ago to win a new car.  I think it might have been 2003 against Wake.  The student had to make a layup, free throw, 3 pointer, and half courter in 30 seconds.  The kid made the first 3 baskets real quick and came up just short on his half court shot but got a long rebound ran it back and buried a turn around shot from past mid-court before the buzzer expired.

Everyone thought he won the car, until it came out later the rules said you the half court shot had to be made on the first try, which apparently the kid knew but kept going anyways.

His father is a dentist.  Not sure he's a "millionaire" dentist.  His parents are strong MU Alums, supporters, and very decent folks.  His father's income puts him in the "paying the full boat at MU, not getting any assistance" category.  He's got other kids in college, and paying full boat for them too (at least one other child at SLU, I think).  Did the student play by the rules and win the tuition fair and square?  Did you know that the parents have to pay tax on the "free tuition?"

Would it change your opinion of the family if you learned that they donated it back to the University to give to someone needier?

Why don't you?

Marquette isn't paying for anything, the sponsor is. I am sure they would be happy to allow the Dankdutch Free Tuition Shootout, and I am also sure you could find an insurance company willing to fund it.

i was just talking about this with my uncle last night.  i can't believe the car dealer would take the negative press of not giving the car, rather than eating the cost of the stripped down ford escort.

regarding the current contest, i'm pretty sure you get to choose the RV or tuition if you make the 1/2 court shot.  so i'm guessing the announcer knows what he is talking about.

my all time memory was the kid that blew out his knee during the basketball musical chairs at the MU vs Arizona game.

You don't get to choose. When the tuition prize was still available, they would have you shoot the half court shot and then try for the 3-pointer. Now that the tuition prize has been won, the RV is all that is up for grabs.

Epic. Wasn't the second half start delayed to get him out of the arena?

Sir Lawrence, i wasn't trying to indicate that I was upset or mad at the fact that a 'fortunate' student got the free tuition. All i was doing was saying is I thought it was somewhat funny that he was already fortunate and got a free tuition. I have nothing against the kid or the family. Its like saying that I believe a kid in high school whose family is very wealthy and is a top athlete in his state shouldn't get a scholarship to a university...do you think I'm a democrat?  ?-(

I apologize if I offended you in any way, but next time don't take it to heart.

so if someone hit the rv shot, there would be no attempt? the student 3 pt. attempt for tuition is the best timeout entertainment. i remember another student hit the shot against pittsburgh for gameday during the timeout and the bradley center went nuts, good entertainment.

don't know why they just don't do another insurance policy...those things are pennies on the dollar for premium/payout.  Maybe the MUScoop free tuition shot can come up, eh rocky?

I actually knew the kid that got ripped off...

He was the one that would win a car if he made a layup, hit a FT, then a 3pt, then a halfcourt shot within a set amount of time.  He hit the first three shots and then shot the halfcourt shot and missed.  He had time left so he got the rebound and hit the halfcourter on his second attempt.  Crowd went wild but later was found out that you had to hit them all on the first try.  Those damn insurance people.
