Depaul does it again! (now 5-2)
« on: January 22, 2015, 08:26:30 PM »
Won at #24 Seton Hall ... first win against a ranked team in seven years (in Rosemont against 'nova in 2008)  Now 1 - 52 against ranked teams since 2008!

Ugly game, took 2 1/2 hours and had almost 60 fouls.

After seven games they are in first place (again).

At what point do we stop saying this is bad for the league and Depaul could be the surprise of this basketball year?

The BE is so even anyone can win the tournament this year.  League was solid out of conference how will it be in the NCAA tournament

It likely won't do well in the tournament. Deep, but the teams at the top aren't great.

The last top 50 in RPI graphic I saw had us, DePaul and Creighton as the only three Big East schools not included.  If DePaul keeps winning they'll get up there.  I guess the bad for the league argument involves just how damaging to their RPI it is for other Big East schools to lose to a fellow conference member that lost seven games in non-conference.  That is a one season phenomenon, however.

This year's success has come too late to help DePaul with 2015-16 recruiting, hopefully it will allow them a higher profile with 2016 HS grads.  Ultimately, it's going to substantially help the league to have high profile programs in the two of the nations top three media markets, so let's hope for the best for DePaul and St. John's.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

Depaul cannot make the NCAA. Their non-conference was too poor. The only way they can possibly make it is if they go 9-2 or better or win the BEast tournament. Every Depaul win is bad for the league.

I kinda want everyone to end up .500 in conference. Creighton needs to go on a run for that to happen though.

I guess the other question is why are they all of the sudden good? Transfer eligible? Cleveland Melvin back?

Does that make our wins bad also?

While they had a really rough stretch, they did knock off Stanford (RPI 22) and have notched 3 more top 50 wins in conference.  If they go 6-5 the rest of the way, that would give them 11 conference wins and at least 8-9 top 50 wins.  Would that be too much to be ignored?  Losing to Lehigh, Loyola Marymount and Ohio is bad, but who knows.  How many good wins outweigh a bad loss?

They aren't bad for DePaul.  DePaul being better gives our conference more credibility, not less.

DePaul being bad out of conference then being good in conference makes the big east appear weak.

Ohhh I always forget the transitive property of hoops.  Dammit!!  Now Lehigh is better than half the Big East!

Fox Sports is reporting that this is DePaul's first road win over a ranked team since beating #16 Wake Forest 84-81 in 2005.

So not only was it so long ago that DePaul beat a ranked team on the road, but it was so long ago that team DePaul beat was Wake Forest; who hasn't been ranked once in 5 seasons.

True.  But right now it is a Top 50 RPI win at a neutral venue.

Oddly enough, DePaul still has the lowest RPI in the conference, per ESPN at #151.

DePaul is 4-5 vs. the RPI Top 50, which is obviously good for them, and as good as they've been in many years.

However, they are currently sitting on an RPI of 151, and a strength of schedule of 153. They also have four bad losses, including two at home. Those are absolutely crippling to their NCAA chances.

ESPN is slow at updating.  Depaul (130) is above Creighton (149) and closing in on us at 102.

I know, it is a good win, but it isn't so good that it separates MU in any way.  It is 1 win.  Our best other non con win was GT, whose RPI is just plummeting and scored 28 points tonight.

They are now officially out of "bad loss" territory.  But really the moral of the story is, if DePaul is so bad, and everyone else is so much better, just beat them.
