If that's the case you gotta feel pretty good about our chances considering he's making the decision relatively soon after his MU visit...
-
Does he have to check with coach Hurley first?
-
I am cautiously optimistic. Jeronne, come on down!
-
Per rivals, it's Tuesday, the 27th.

I like the timing of this and have a good feeling. Been some threads about his academics, his father, etc., and I really don't care because its obvious the kid has talent and is highly ranked. With all the other BE schools recently getting commitments, this hopefully will benefit the program. Then its three scholarships left, two for 2009 and the leftover 2008. Lets see if Buzz can close the deal with Maymon.

Love it.
-
Welcome aboard Maymon!!!!! Signup and be part of a top twenty recruiting class. Talk to your buddy Wilson and announce together.
Go get 'em Buzz!!!!!!
-
HELP US LORD ::)
-
Did Maymon have any other visits or is he planning any between now and announcement day?
-

Where's that rim-shot button when you need it?
-
Wow! Great news!
Two top 75 players for '09 so far isn't too shabby.
-
Not to be the turd in the punch bowl here, but didn't Keno Davis just offered him a ride at Providence. I know his father was looking for the offense to run through his son, and it seems more likely that could happen at Providence. I hope I am wrong and he heard everything he need to hear from Buzz and is ready to sign up for MU.
-

That's what I was thinking too. If MU was his only visit to date and he isn't planning any more visits.....
Sounds like Buzz and company did a hell of a job talking this kid and his father through the process.

Maybe, but does it make sense he would commit to Providence sight unseen a week after visiting MU and having his dad say he had a "great" meeting with the Marquette staff?
Who knows what'll happen, but the timing at least looks good for Marquette. Either Buzz and Co. wowed the kid or they scared him into the arms of another program.
Anyhow, from the Wisconsin State Journal:
Prep basketball: Memorial's Maymon to announce college choice Tuesday
By ROB HERNANDEZ
Madison Memorial junior Jeronne Maymon, the Associated Press' state boys basketball player of the year, will announce his college decision Tuesday at 8 a.m. at Genesis Enterprise Center in Madison.
Maymon's father, Tim, said his son will choose from nine schools that have offered the 6-foot-5 forward a scholarship. Those schools are: Baylor, Iowa State, Marquette, Tennessee, UW-Milwaukee, UW-Green Bay, USC, Temple and Providence.
For more on this story, check back here late or pick up Friday's edition of the Wisconsin State Journal.

Well, he just took an unofficial to DePaul when he was in Chicago for an AAU tournament a couple weeks ago, and supposedly he was going to visit Wake Forest when he goes down to NC to play in the Bob Gibbon's TOC this weeked.
-
yes, PC did offer. From the list of interested schools, I cannot imagine MU being edged out by anyone with the exception of USC or Tennessee.
-
Looks like MU, Baylor and Iowa State are the main contenders along with possibly USC.
-
I really like our chances with him right now, I really don't think given the choice between PC and us, he'd go with PC; his teammates will be alot better at Marquette.
Now, with McNeal coming back, and if we can get Maymon, then work on Lacy and Wilson...the optimism meter would be off the charts!
-
This is win-win for Marquette.
If he picks Marquette, then we get a fast-rising and uber-talented player.
If he picks Iowa State, Baylor, or some random school, then he won't be in conference anyways. Plus, there won't be any questions or concerns about his dad's involvement or grades.
Marquette doesn't lose either way. Giddyup!
-
I agree Henry. And to add to that win-win, if he doesn't come here, we get to stop wasting time and resources into his recruitment. I hope he picks Marquette, but as they say, the second best answer is No.

Just a reminder, for consolidated recruiting info, the wiki *is* your source.
I just went to add this info to the page, but was already beat to it MU Chi_IL.
There's always a link to the "Recruiting Info" page in the top left of your screen (in the Resources box). However, here's a direct link...

I don't see how not getting Maymon is a winning situation...I'm hopeful that the meeting went great and he wants to announce that he is coming to MU, but as usual I am quite skeptical.
-
Jamil---You gotta believe. One down and two to go in WI.

Sorry to nitpick (I know, I know ... then why do it?) but shouldn't Joe Fulce be listed as a SF/PF on that page, rather than SG? Or am I wrong about him?
Otherwise, the page(s) looks fantastic.

Pakuni - The great thing about a wiki is that the community updates it. So instead of being nitpicky, just make the update and we are all better for it. I place you in charge of making the update.
-
Yup, you can be as nitpicky as you want when editing the pages. ;D
1) Just go to the login** page:
http://wiki.muscoop.com/doku.php?id=start&do=login
2) Use the MUScoop username & password
3) If you click the "Remember me" box you won't have to login again until your computers cookies get cleared out.
** - The login page used to have these instructions, I must have forgotten to update that last time we upgraded the wiki. There's another upgrade coming, so I'll add it during that one.
-
On a side note- Does anyone know the correct pronunciation of Maymon's first name?
Is it, Jeh-rone?

Yeah that seems more believable. I was hoping it would be more like Jaronnie. That would be cool haha.

I don't even know what that means. ?-(
-
Gotta say I agree with it being win-win. I'm not the biggest believer in WI athletes, but there is a good class in '09 I have to admit (based on rankings). If we could secure Maymon that would allow us to turn sights solely on Wilson. And if we don't get him, we move on AND he's not in the conference (we think).
I don't know why everyone would be so quick to poo-poo the Providence offer, though. If you're a Prov fan, you could make the same kind of reasoning to think he's coming to your school. One never knows what goes on in the heads of these kids and their parents.
Sincerely,
Coach Hurley

I can't even imagine the theme of the threads if Maymon picks Providence over MU.
-

Do you know what Lazar means? It's a name....
-

I believe that Lazar is the Greek god of rebounding.
-
So...it seems this would be a bigger grab than Jamil Wilson...?
The Associated Press chose him as Wisconsin's Player of the Year over Wilson, so I mean...sweet! Hopefully we get at least one of them. If we got both of them...
Wowzers.
-
Imo, he's Marquette's to lose. Was told two weeks ago that if MU made a firm offer, Maymon would snap it up. Plus, he visited MU yesterday and announces a decision will be public the day after? No coincidence. But things change ;).
This is good and bad. Talent-wise, we may not get a better player in the 2009 class. There are issues off the court that seemed to have been resolved by maturing but the main question is his academic standing. Perhaps he announces the decision early to give him that extra dose of motivation to hit the books harder.
The main negative is that MU takes a spot out of the 09 pool on a player who at best is 50/50 right now in terms of qualifying. Considering the 09 class is the start of a complete overhaul of MU and is the foundation for Buzz' tenure it's a risky move.
-
I can't even imagine the theme of the threads if Maymon picks Providence over MU.
Yeah, that's what was thinking....it definitely isn't a win-win in that situation. It's more like a Jerry Smith situation or Reece Gaines. Pray he's eligible as well, otherwise we would have locked up a spot for no reason.
-
I believe that Lazar is the Greek god of rebounding.
haha, how could I forget that?!
-
Get him to commit, praise the staff for the commitment and see what Buzz can do with the other two scholarships. Thats why he was hired and would be a great start. The word goes out to AAU programs that MU signed two top players and the players ask "anyone else want to play with us?" Especially a point guard and Wilson. Let the academics thing work itself out.
-
I think his parent's involvement means he is going to MU. If they are that involved it is not likely he would go far away from home. Given that Wilson says he is going to annouce on his mom's birthday, which would mean a spring signing I do not think you wait for him. Keep recruiting him and if a commit does not make it academically you have a scholarship available for him. I also think you may be giving Maymon's parents a bad rap. If the teams recruiting him were telling him they were going to design the offense arround him, then his father just might be repeating what his son was told. It came out like a demand or expectation but that was probably over blown. Especially by the negative people on this board.
-

The players of the year are almost always chosen from teams that make it to state because most of the voters don't see the players much otherwise. Wilson is a better prospect, but this is good news.
-
I would be extremely happy about the pick up. Especially after the news of McNeal. If Buzz has any wits, he will get the incoming class considerable amount of playing time. I think McNeal, James, and Matthews are going to be good mentors.

Overblown? Hardly.
The father was quoted as saying his son would not redshirt and would not be coming off the bench. Not much doubt in that sentiment.

BTW, I think it is also a good sign that Maymon goes to the same HS that Wes Mathews went to. I'm sure he was involved in the visit and his HS coach has had good things to say about Wes' experience at MU.
I'm fairly certain this is going to be good news.

It may help, but the thinking was the same with Keaton Nankivil and Vander Blue both of whom are Madison Memorial guys as well, and they both ended up committing to UW. Obviously the situation isn't exactly the same since UW isn't involved with Maymon anymore, but I wouldn't put too much stock into the Memorial connection since it hasn't worked in the past.

But I think the fact that UW isn't involved makes a big difference. We're not going against a hometown team. We're going against Baylor and ISU. BTW, did MU make a run at Blue at all?

Yes, Buzz extended an offer soon after he got the job, but then Blue picked UW a few days later.

Still confused, are you trying to be funny? Yes, Jeronnie is a name, but why is that funny? I give up.
-
yes, PC did offer. From the list of interested schools, I cannot imagine MU being edged out by anyone with the exception of USC or Tennessee.
Buzz couldn't possibly outrecruit the National Coach of the Year at PC...plus, he doesn't have the "integrity" as guys like Floyd or Pearl. X MU off the list.
-
Maymon would be making a mistake at unproven Providence College. This has Robert Jackson written all over it. Lets hope Maymon makes the right choice.
-

No... I was not trying to be funny-never mentioned anything about trying to be funny. The way Jeronne's name is spelled could possibly be pronounced several ways. I did not know how it was pronounced, but hoped it was said like "Jaronnie" because it sound pretty unique. Not sure what you didn't understand about that.

Is anyone concerned about a 6'6" power forward? I know it can be done in college, but I'm just sayin'....

The key is that he weighs 235 - that is an NBA type body as a high schooler.

Maymon has a knack for creating space that is just incredible at his age. He can drive with either hand equally too. The guy is built like an ox. Imagine a guy who can sink those odd shots like Alando Tucker and has 30 pounds over Tucker in muscle mass before he starts playing college ball.
-
The other odd thing about Baylor is that they have already signed a 6'8" five star recruit for '09. In '08 they have a 6'8 top 50 ranked small forward in Anthony Jones. I just don't see how Baylor's promise of running the offense through him from day one can be taken seriously.

I hope that sways him to MU, the more I hear about his situation the more I get the feeling he's headed to Waco...
