Missing Tyler Herro
« on: January 07, 2019, 02:36:36 PM »
How bad are we missing Tyler Herro right now? Throw him in this lineup and we would be legitimate national title contenders. He is looking like a mid first rounder possibly lottery pick after this season. We only would have had him for one year but it would have been worth it.

Right now he is ranked about 53rd on one draft.  Not sure he is ready yet, awful skinny.  Not sure how he would have fit with Markus, only one ball.

We'd probably be missing Joey Hauser then, if some reports are correct.

Rather have Joey.

He would be perfect fit here.  But we all knew this a few years ago too.   I'll go out on a limb here and predict he averages 18-20 rest of the day.

I've watched a few KY games and have been impressed. He would fit really well next to Markus. Plays off the ball for Kentucky. Seems to pick his spots well and by no means is a chucker. While he has a ways to go on the defensive side ( as most frosh do) he has definitely improved.

Shocking that the '2' of you would simultaneously disappear for months only to  'coincidentally' return on the same day discuss the only subject you have ever posted about.  Astonishing.

Sorry, rest of the way.

He is definitely not a chucker.  The guy we had here last year was a chucker.

I know Cheesy but I'm not one in the same.  We just thought it would be prudent to remind you who was right about Herro after another year has played out.  Glad to see we are finally getting some other support on this site.

No one ever said Herro wasn't a great player.

We just disagreed with over the top statements like "he put Wisconsin high school basketball on the map"

Glad he's doing well. Would have loved to have him. I'm more glad that we have Joey.

Pretty sure that if anyone is missing Herro, it's the rodents. Once he decommitted and the blue bloods got involved, he never seemed interested in sticking around.

Anyhow, I'm perfectly happy with Joey. I would never refuse to take a one-and-done, but would rather build a program around 3 and 4 year players.

If that's the case, why isn't Kentucky better?  If he is the missing piece for our 3 and 4 star talent, why isn't he taking them to the promised land with all of their 5 star talent?

He is a nice player, would have helped MU or Wisky, but he is not a game changer.  There are not many of them except a few kids at Duke, right now he is a little ahead of Quentin Grimes, who might have been a tad overrated.

Imagine not being satisfied with the amount of attention your family member is getting at Kentucky (of all places), such that you have to go to a board for a nonrival school to start posts about him a year after his recruitment ended? This after all of your prior trolling efforts failed as well. Bizarre.

Herro's father Chris appears to run the show (case in point:  https://www.kentucky.com/sports/college/kentucky-sports/uk-basketball-men/article219505905.html).  I think that may be a big reason Wojo stayed away, or may explain the stories we hear about the Hausers.  Having "handlers" doesn't seem like the MU way these days, while Kentucky probably has staff dedicated to handling handlers.  Also, CCAP is your friend.

I don't think Herro/Joey were an either/or deal like some have suggested. I think Herro was interested in playing for a blue blood and got his wish.

However, just in case it was an either/or, I think we may have gotten the better end of the deal.

Joey: 27.9 mpg, 10.5 ppg, 6.1 rpg, 2.3 apg, 0.5 spg, 0.1 bpg, 2.0 tpg, 60.5 eFG%
Herro: 28.8 mpg, 13.2 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 2.1 apg 1.3 spg, 0.5 bpg, 1.5 tpg, 52.8 eFG%

I think both are great players with good chances of playing in the Association. I would love to have both on this team. If we could only have one, I think I'd rather have Joey.

I'm sure he'd be an asset to any program, but his offensive rating is a lot like Matt Heldt's last year. Impressive, but with a virtually non-existent usage rate.

Is striving to match/exceed Heldt's run during his glory years a bad thing? :) Haliburton is averaging 9/4/4 on the traditional stat line w a ridiculous eFG%.  Back-to-back double-digit efforts to kickoff conference play seem to indicate he's not hit a freshman wall just yet. Seems like a steal for the Cyclones TBH

Definitely a steal for the Cyclones. Playing way better than his #173 composite ranking would have suggested.

The player that we really missed out in that group is Marial Shayok. He was great at Virginia and is now a dude at Iowa State. He was the Buzz recruit that I hoped Wojo could retain more than any of the others.

I definitely don't want to insinuate that UK did anything wrong in the recruitment, or that anyone gave or has agreed to give $, because I really have no idea.  However, I do think that most schools would look at such significant financial issues and be more than a little worried, especially given the fact that we've very recently seen players' parents brokering side deals that put both the player and the program in jeopardy.  Especially with a player of Herro's caliber, where there are likely to be some less-than-wholesome business folk lining up to "help" him.  If nothing else, it might push him to enter the draft this year, which is probably not in his best interests.

Unless he transferred here instead of Marquette West

That's what I was saying.

I'm surprised the NBA hasn't changed its "one and done" rule already -- just so Tyler Herro can go pro even sooner. He'll make fans forget Steph Curry, Michael Jordan or Magic Johnson ever existed.

Back when Shayok said he wanted to transfer, he was the guy I wanted. This year's Warriors with Shayok ... wow!

But does MU land Sam, and therefore Joey, with Shayok on the roster?

Sam was already on the roster when Shayok transferred from Virginia.

But even if we we're talking about keeping him as a freshman, they play two different positions so I don't think it would have affected Sam's recruitment.

He'll finally put NBA basketball on the map.

Like I said two days ago......wouldn't be surprised to see Herro average 20 the rest of the way.  21 last night, boys.

They should just put him in the hall of fame already....

there's talk that after he sets the NCAA record for postseason scoring they may rename the Wooden Award:

there is an actual video on how to create Herro as a player in NBA2K19.
I just made a team full of Herros and they beat the 1996 Bulls by 112.

https://youtu.be/ExqpByTI1-Q

and a note for those that track such things; his neck durability rating in the video is 85 (4:23 into video).

I dove down the CCAP rabbit-hole for the elder Herro a little deeper last night (because that's what I do when my kid wakes up at 2 AM).

It looks like he was briefly a partner of some sort in a bar/restaurant in Mundelein, IL called Blue 60 - probably 7-8 years ago at this point.  Anyway, the bar lost its liquor license for various reasons, but what struck me was the other owner of the place was another Wisconsin guy named Steve Itsines.  I knew the name sounded familiar, and it turns out that he very recently went to prison for running a pretty significant sports gambling business (https://www.jsonline.com/story/news/crime/2016/09/30/new-berlin-man-charged-sports-bookie/91327780/).

So, yeah.  Bedfellows and all that.

I knew Herro was a good player.  Until I read this thread I didn't know about any of this stuff.

I knew Herro was a good player.  Until I read this thread I didn't know about any of this stuff.

Herro is a very good player, and will very likely play in the NBA in some capacity.  But the original poster (and aliases?) seem to imply that MU didn't recruit him because they didn't recognize his talent level.  I'm sure they saw his talent, but were either a) flat-out told that he was going elsewhere (UW, UK), or b) did their due-diligence and found something they didn't like.  His pops' legal/financial issues would sure give me pause if I were bringing in a marquee player.

And just to clarify, I don't know anything first-hand about their situation - I only know what is publicly available, like anyone else.  Honestly, I wish the kid nothing but the best and hope that he listens to the right people and achieves his dream.
