Message boards and internet reports can work against Wojo's efforts to bring the current players together and recruit prospects. Over the years it has actually cost MU recruits.
-
Agreed. Words have consequences. And those consequences can hurt MU basketball. BTW, who did it cost us this time? So we know who to blame.
-
Some of us OLD guys look at this as harmless fun. The kids (HS, College and up to around 30 yo maybe) use this as a serious way of communicating.
It's gospel to them.
Things change.

When proselytizing it is better to preach in a dive bar than the sacristy. Get thee from this nunnery and sow thy seed in more fertile and appropriate ground. Scout awaits your fevered word, sir!
-
Then let's just spell out the new rules. This needs to be a 100% rah-rah, wave-your-pom-poms board.
The expression of opinions—especially negative ones—will not be tolerated.

wave-your-pom-poms board.
uh...most of us are guys

If this board is the sacristy, then I call the role of the unconsecrated-wine-stealing altar boy.

Bull. Name a program that has nothing but glowing commentary on their boards? Name a recruit who cited "comments" on the message boards that made him decide to "not commit". If comments on theses boards had any effect, half the current players would not be coming back.
-
Time for everyone to start being serious on the Internet!

Yup, that would be my argument. If MU loses recruits because of message board banter, than those same recruits aren't going to see anything differently on any other message board. Otherwise the argument is that recruits are really sensitive to Marquette posters, but don't care what the posters on other boards say about them. That doesn't pass the smell test.

This is so true

Why, oh god why, do you hit the space bar 18 freaking times after a period?

You're in for a long wait.

So just like every major college basketball fanbase?
-
I have to agree with Tulsa. and we all know it. And we all know...."showing some sort of prove" is not possible.
-

...good thing we don't step in it.
-
Recruits choose a school because of the support from the coach and school, NOT from the support of potential fans. Boards have no effect because they are 99% opinion driven from who knows who.
-
It's all common sense. I could see where spreading false or negative rumors about a current player or recruit may have consequences. The problem is some posters love to spread that gossip, not matter how far-fetched or silly it is.
-

LOL. That's awesome
Sounds more like a convenient excuse a kid would give. "I didn't go to MU because someone said something mean on a message board, so I'm going to attend Wisconsin where they talk about tattoos, and players moms instead on their message boards".
::)

I will give you proof......if it weren't for those other boards we would have landed Shaka!

That's what UCLA said, too

Did I miss something? Why did this thread pop up in the first place?

I believe Carson Desrosiers was one. Parents didn't like the comments on the message boards from what I can recall.
-
Vander cited the Badgers forums as a reason he didn't recommit
-
The best way to ruin a message board is to censor all negative thought.
-
This is classic.
The recruits don't care what a handful of blowhards say.
Self-importance much?
-
Wasn't the original poster the one quoted in another thread sending tweets to Ahmed Hill? Maybe you should stop directly contacting recruits on Twitter and then you can tell the rest of us how to act.
-

Any recruit who is such a wuss that he would make his decision based on the Internet ramblings of anonymous dopes (present company included) isn't tough enough to play for the Warriors. Let him go to Dayton!

Jams
There is one that I do know of. Kid's mom didn't like some of what she read. He's at PC now.

Derosiers? And ramblings of the badger boards contributed to Blue's decision to not go to UW.

Yea

I don't know if you are brilliant ( I think you are some days) or just got lucky on this one, but really....he's at "PC" now. You meant Providence, or you put PC there as the ultimate pun?
You win the internet today.

Don't forget Wilt Chamberlain and George Mikan. The DePaul message boards showering love ultimately sealed the deal for Mikan. Bastards.

Don't want this to turn into Dodds Gestapo Board. Got banned umpteen years ago for stating, "who the hell is IWB." Guess I was slightly ahead of the curve, aina?

Exactly.
BTW, I was curious why Tulsa posted this here so I looked over at Dodds Board and while he posted the same message there it was with the caveat that "the message was really for the Scoop Board..."
I mean, WTF?
There is a reason this place is a lot more fun. And actually has informed discussion.
-
Message boards and internet reports can work against Wojo's efforts to bring the current players together and recruit prospects. Over the years it has actually cost MU recruits.
Couple things. First, I don't believe this. There is no way internet boards are the sole reason a player doesn't attend a school. Kids might mention it, but there are likely other factors that prevent them. Chat boards are an easy target. Much easier to say that then bash the school, city, etc.
Second, if They, in fact, don't attend MU because some gibroni says something stupid on scoop, then good riddance. Not mentally tough. If they can't handle that, how the hell will they handle the rigors of major college basketball.
-
Name one recruit lost bc of MQ message boards.
Didn't know Mequon had message boards about college basketball players. Learn something new every day.

I like it. If a kid doesn't want to come to MU because of something said on a message board, how is that same kid going to handle the pressure of a college course load and actual games.
-
If this is true, then we all need to start creating accounts on other basketball boards and troll 110% :)
-
If anything, this board hypes these recruits into better players than they really are. Potential recruits get their youtube highlights posted on here and everyone talks about them like they are the greatest player to ever lace them up. There isn't very much negativity when talking about potential recruits. Now talking about our former coaches, lots of negativity and most deservedly so!
-

All joking aside there is an underlying truth there: kids need to lock up their damn tweets and facebook accounts.
They're part of the reason there's unfettered access (love and hate) to their accounts and, understandably, emotions.
You don't like what someone says? Block them. Report them.
You can't be sure they represent who they say they are.
But they just want the love...they want to feel wanted...
Which is all baloney when the coach you support decides to leave.
HE left the university; the university didn't fire him.
Some people these days...use the gray matter and grow a pair.
-

I will go first I will register on Badgermaniac and be known as Swenson and take shots at Diamond Stone saying how much better Ellenson is. Of course I will do this all with thinly veiled racism.

Only complete mental midgets like Vander Blue get upset about what fans have to say about them.
;D

At least our mental midget didn't go into hiding every March and bow out early in the NCAA Tournament.
Oops.

Wait, you seriously believe a recruit gives a single crap about what some people say on a forum? What?!?!?!?!?!?

I do not know if negative comments on this board has caused MU to lose any recruits, but I never understood why there is so much negativism towards recruits or our current players.

Maybe it doesn't enter your mind that this very type of reaction turns off recruits parents. I know it's hard to believe and this happens all the time on this board, but hey, it's all about freedom of speech.

I recommend you start another board. Call it MUKisses&Sunshine.com.

For the record, I'd like the guy who lost the bet to email me at muscoop@muscoop.com, and we'll make sure TheTulsaWarrior never gets the best of you again ;D

Words absolutely have consequences. Even the ramblings of the self important on message boards.
Could we lose recruits over it? Yes.
Does this happen often? No.
Where I actually see more damage is on the pysche of current players. At TAMU, we attempt to keep the players off the boards but they read them. And it gets in their head. TAMU football fans make Scoopers look like kittens. Players get upset, they take offense, and I have seen it lead to players copping attitudes or even leaving the institution.
I have no problem with what is said here, provided one rule is followed. If you would say it to a person's face in real life, than post it. If you wouldn't have the cajones to say it in person, don't say it on the internet. It's cowardly, IMHO.
"Negative" posting is absolutely acceptable. But there is a huge difference between "Derrick is a poor shooter," "Derrick makes the game 4 on 5," "Derrick struggles with the entry pass" and "Derrick sucks," "Derrick wouldn't start for a division 2 team," and "Derrick is the worst player in the history of Marquette basketball."
Hyperbole is not your friend.
And yes, I would say all of this to someone in person ;D

BURN!....or revisionist history?

It's the first merit badge earned by most true MU fans.
