2012 Graduation
« on: February 16, 2012, 05:08:35 PM »
Not basketball related, but MU announced today that Hank Aaron will be the commencement speaker at graduation this May. Pretty neat.

Any cool noteables from your graduation experiences?

Hopefully someone will add the speech here after he gives it.

Wow, what a treat for them.   We had Dick Enberg in '09.  He was fantastic, everyone loved his speech.  Definitely feels good when you hear about the underwhelming draws others have had for their classes/schools.

I had the legendary Wayne Sanders!

'04 was a year that MU struck out on getting a well-known Commencement speaker and instead decided to throw a bone to a big-time donor/prospect. Only to have that blow-up in their face, when Wayne decided to touch the third-rail of MU politics, the great nickname debate. Good times!

Shockingly, MU hasn't gone down that Commencement route since.

You guys are lucky.  I graduated in '08 and we had Andrew Natsios.  All I remember is him name dropping everyone he'd worked with (Colin Powell is a good friend of mine!!) for what seemed like 4 hours.  Hank Aaron would be pretty cool to hear.

Supreme Court Justice Rehnquist.   Ridiculously dull.

Worst speech ever.  He claimed he would donate a million dollars if we brought back the Warriors.  Of course everyone cheered... I just shook my head and knew it would never happen.

Saint Sanders may have failed, but he got us closer to the promised land than anyone in a decade.

We had the lady who started teach for America in 2010, that was possibly the worst speech I've ever heard. I'm still pissed I had to listen to that lady talk for what seemed like hours, got nothing out of it.
Bring back FFP!!!

The only thing that Sanders got MU close to was Marquette Gold. That whole debacle was sent in motion that graduation day.

Just because its one of my favorite articles maybe ever, and I square peg/round hole it into whatever I can - here's an article about college graduation from when Drew was still relatively new at Deadspin:

Don't forget his constant references to where he went to college (Georgetown) or the time he spent on his private island.

Thank God we had Rushin the year before.

I think '94 was Cardinal Bernardin.  Don't remember much from it, other than sweating lots of beer throughout the event.

I also had Enberg.  It was the closest thing to having Al McGuire give your commencement speech.

Also I won the bet with my friends on how many times Dick would say any Al, McGuire, or Al McGuire.  I want to say it was 19 times but I forget now.

I thought enberg was ok. I remember very little because unnatural carnal knowledge it I was graduating. Goes without saying that Enberg was better than whatever insufferable self absorbed student MU threw in front of us.

I feel bad for anyone in the 2004-2008 range. Yikes

Well, I guess there is that.  Perhaps he should have pushed for the Marquette Blue Balls.

(Not so sure he got us any closer than we were before his speech...we all know what you get when you multiply any number by zero...)

+ 1 million

That was something like a 9:00 am ceremony as well.  Up all night before, worst speech in the history of graduations.

I feel lucky as the exception to that rule in 07. Steve Rushin was excellent. I still read that speech from time to time.
