New assistant Coach?
« on: February 23, 2016, 02:19:02 PM »
I met some one on Sunday that is an NC State grad and big fan. I was told that Sidney Lowe was in Milwaukee Saturday to interview for an assistant coaching position at Marquette.

Was I fed a line of BS or is it possible Wojo is looking for an experienced assistant for the bench?

I can't say if there's any truth to that, but Justin Gainey, MU's Director of Basketball Ops, coached under Lowe at NC State so there's a connection. What that's worth? I have no idea.

I dig it. Head coaching experience, been at both college and professional level. Probably still has some east coast recruiting ties. I feel like that would give us a lot of coaches though...

Sidney Lowe is an assistant with the Timberwolves.  They had games at Memphis on Friday night, and in Minneapolis Saturday night.  He gave interviews at halftime of both games, so he didn't miss anything.

So while its not impossible, I would place it in the "highly unlikely" category.  At least for the interview on Saturday.  Whether or not someone is leaving and he would be interested, I have no idea.

It might have been an interview on Sunday, I really am not positive on the day.

It does seem unlikely one would leave an assistant's gig in the NBA for another in college.

Any idea of your sources relationship to Lowe?

Just as likely for him to be a personal friend of Lowe's as a message board fanboy.

Lowe played with Thurl Bailey at NC State.  No wonder we were able to land Brendan, ai'na?

Interesting - you never know.  We'll see if it surfaces as truth in the near future.

There maybe something to this.  Sidney was going to be apart of Flip Saunder's coaching staff for the T-wolves.  Sam Mitchell was delegated to interim coach after Flip's passing...but a lot of talk that Sam will not get the full-time gig next year.  So Sidney may be looking for his next stop after the T-wolves coaching staff gets let go at the end of the year.

In my opinion...Sidney would be a OK hire...I did not think he did that well with NC State a few years ago as the head coach.

By definition an assistant coach that has head coaching experience likely failed at the head coaching job.  Unless you get a real elder statesman that loves the game but doesn't want the stress (Keady or a Don Zimmer as a baseball example).

I agree that I would rather have an assistant come in that excelled at X's & O's and failed at recruiting (like Deane).  I seem to remember Sidney could get the players but never seemed to get the success - but thats just a gut reaction.

Either way though -- I think we  need to add some experience to the bench.

He's also never been a college assistant.

1991–1993   Minnesota Timberwolves (assistant)
1993–1994   Minnesota Timberwolves
1994–1999   Cleveland Cavaliers (assistant)
1999–2000   Minnesota Timberwolves (assistant)
2000–2002   Vancouver / Memphis Grizzlies
2003–2005   Minnesota Timberwolves (assistant)
2005–2006   Detroit Pistons (assistant)
2006–2011   NC State
2011–2014   Utah Jazz (assistant)
2014-present   Minnesota Timberwolves (assistant)

Spot on.

The fact that Lowe did not succeed as a head coach does not indicate he is a poor assistant coach.  The two roles require different skill sets.  The NFL is littered with brilliant Offensive and Defensive Coordinators who couldn't cut it as a head coach.

Lowe was a pretty good recruiter but never found much success on the court. 86-78 record at NC State with two NIT appearances. After he left, Gottfried took mostly his players to the Sweet 16 the next year.

I still wouldn't mind having him on the bench if someone is headed elsewhere. He's coached as both an assistant and head coach in the NBA and has at least been around the block. He wouldn't have to worry about the head duties and could just focus on advising Wojo. He was on the staffs of quite a few NBA playoff teams and I'd have to think he knows the game pretty darn well. He would fit that role of the older head many of us feel is missing from this staff.

That said...still plenty of NBA season left, so seems early for him to be talking about a job here. Especially with our staff currently full. Really hope this isn't a sign Stan Johnson is moving on, he's been amazing so far. Have to think any number of major programs would be happy to have him.

You'd be correct. Seems like a great recruiter;

2006 Class - 1 Four-Star
2007 Class - #14 Class in Country, 5 Star (JJ Hickson), this 4 star, and 2 Three-Stars
2008 Class - 2 Three-Stars
2009 Class - #18 Class in Country, 2 Four-Stars (One Future NBAer) and 2 Three-Stars
2010 Class - #6 Class in Country, 1 Five Star and 2 Four Stars (2 Future NBAers)

Wow. He musta been a real shyte bench coach!

Actually, I lived in Minny when he was the T-Wolves coach. He had a dysfunctional team, but he certainly didn't cover himself with glory, either.

Again, doesn't mean he can't be a good asst.
