St. John's a wonderful environment? Compared to what?

Don't know NY all that well, in fact most of my knowledge of Queens comes from Coming to America.[/i] But Wonderful environment is probably a stretch.  Although the area surrounding MU is nothing to write home about either.

For an east coast kid the bright lights of NYC have got to a draw.  The incessant mediocrity of St. John's and DePaul has always seemed puzzling.  Why couldn't one of those schools have attracted a high energy recruiter/promoter like KO or Crean?   Then again, maybe that is happening right now.

yes, he's from baton rouge, LA.  He's went to a prep school in Maryland for one year.

SJU is in Queens and mostly a commuter school.

But it is a nice campus. In fact, it doesn't really seem like it's in NYC.

I shot hoops there with some buddies who were alums. It isn't a "downtown" campus like MU is.

Donald Williams/Comments on St. John's Campus
« Reply #9 on: June 11, 2008, 07:14:30 AM »
In response to questions on the neighborhood around St. John's University, it is adjacent to a section called Jamaica Estates, where Donald Trump grew up and $1 million will get you a fairly modest house and homes in the $2 million+ range are mre common.  In fact, the scenes of the wealthy guy's house in the Eddie Murphy film "Coming to America", which an earlier post referred to, were shot about two blocks from the SJU campus.

Jamaica Estates is beautiful, but there are no stores there. Jamaica itself makes State Street in Milwaukee look like Rodeo Drive.

Reminds me of the LL Cool J song, where he raps Farmer's Boulevard, where that at...Jamaica Queens

Jamaica Estates is zoned for residences only, with limited exceptions for churches, synagogues and schools.  The commercial strip bordering Jamaica Estates to the north, Union Turnpike, formerly featured several high end furriers and clothing boutiques but now is mainly restaurants.  The Jamaica section of Queens is south of Jamaica Estates and St. John's.  Farmers Boulevard is about five miles from SJU.

St. John's opened its first dormatories about four years ago, giving the area a more collegiate feel, particularly on weekends.  In the old days, SJU put their basketball players in nearby apartments.

Nearby is Archbishop Molloy High School, which academically is the best catholic high school in Queens, and the alma mater of former Marquette star Roney Eford, as well as Brian Winters (former Bucks star), Kenny Anderson, David Caruso (the actor; also played hoops at Molloy), and Andrew Cuomo.  The Bayside section of Queens is about three miles from St. John's; current Marquette player Patrick Hazel attended Bayside High School.

Probably more information than you wanted.

I used to live in Kew Gardens, which borders Jamaica, which is why my auto insurance was $2,700 per year. Jamaica is the carjacking capital of the East Coast.
