Todd RosiakMU's Hayward clearedMarquette Golden Eagles freshman Lazar Hayward was cleared Friday afternoon by the NCAA for game competition.
Hayward's paperwork had been under review by the NCAA for almost six weeks.
The 6-foot-6 forward, who played last season at Notre Dame Prep in Fitchburg, Mass., was cleared to practice a little over two weeks ago, but had yet to be given clearance to be able to take part in games.
Hayward is in the running along with junior Dan Fitzgerald to assume the starting power forward spot vacated by the graduated Steve Novak.
His availability is considered huge for MU, which was picked by coaches to finish fourth in the Big East in the league's annual pre-season poll released on Wednesday. Hayward figures to give the Golden Eagles an added dose of athleticism and shooting on the perimeter, and he's already considered one of the team's top rebounders.
By being cleared, Hayward will now also be able to participate in MU's scrimmage at Kansas State on Sunday.
The Golden Eagles and Hayward will scrimmage tonight beginning around 8 p.m. at the Al McGuire Center. The event, called "Haunted Hoops", is open to the public.
