1. Good defense, offense, rebounding, took care of the ball, attacked the rim, made enough 3's.
2. Everything every MU fan has been rooting for all year. For one night, everything clicked and it was glorious.
3. OMP. Not a waste of a scholarship. You need length in the Big East. I like him as a starter.
4. Kuath controlling the interior.
5. Welcome back, Mr. Jones.
6. OK, quit fouling 3 pt shooters.
7. They never quit. I am a huge fan of that when they are behind. I am a huge fan of that with a lead.
8. Good to get off the schneid. Everybody exhale.
9. How about a streak now?
-
Very fun game! Big time W!
-
Great win! Great historic win for Shaka!
-
Shaka's best win of the year by far.
-
Congratulations to Shaka and the team. Great way to win your first game in the Big East.
Let's continue that play at Georgetown!
-
If that's the ceiling...we will have some excellent hoops to watch over the next 3-4 years
-
Ill take a win streak for MUBB anytime. Hopefully this game showed that MU can win a slow-pace half court offense game. Hope they can integrate it more when the frenzy-offense isnt working.
-
Tower's thread title and the on court performance both get a 10/10.
-
Well done by the fella’s tonight. Won’t be the last BE win this year.
-
It will not result in 32 point blow outs everytime
But please, let’s make it a point to establish the paint early like tonight from here on out.
Let the 3s come naturally later. This team is athletic enough and can pass well enough to work it to the rim
-
A pretty significant change in offensive mindset leads to a much more visually pleasing game. Rather than three point attempts by volume, work the ball inside and establish scoring in the paint which then opens up the three point shot. Probably a better strategy in the long run for this squad.
Phenomenal strategy to take out Watson from the game. Fronted him on the strong side and crazy good ball pressure made entry passes impossible. He barely touched the ball.

Where’s nolonger?
-
Awesome performance and thread title tonight!
-
The talent is there, fellas.
Great to see them put it all together. MU won't blow out good teams like PC on the regular, but they're capable of playing some pretty good ball.
-
Where’s nolonger?
Who da F&*K cares??? 8-)
-
This team is still very much a live bullet. The early wins were no fluke. This is still a dangerous team. We just lost several extremely tough games to very good teams and many wrote the team off.
The schedule softens up for us. Those losses will drive the team to improve and team cohesion will only continue to grow.
-
Pakuni
Nice win tonight!! Fast start and make a couple of early baskets and they can play with anyone in BE.
-
Most complete effort we've seen since Brent was around.
Great rebounding position and team rebounding effort, defensive rotations were outstanding, very few runouts/easy baskets, and the ball movement was great. Very fun to watch.
-
Was wondering how'd they come out after having a loss pulled from the jaws of victory, but not to worry.
They set the tone from the beginning with great defense. On offense, they showed a new dimension by attacking the rim. With big guys. Not like having guards attack Kalkbrenner.
Nice to see JL inside the 3-point line. Good passing, sharing.
Let's take this energy to GT, where, if weather and Covid cooperate, I'll cheer them on.
God, I love nights like this.
-
Haven't enjoyed a blowout like that in quite a while. Very impressive.
-
Where’s nolonger?

A very impressive stat, 24 assists

Any comments are welcome but respect the process!
Great win!

This! Loved it.

Yes. I have been saying this for quite some time. There's a big difference between an "open" three and a good three. We usurped this game early by slowing down in our half-court sets, moving the basketball, and establishing the paint with Kolek dropping dimes. In tandem with slowing down, and taking better shots, we also took care of the basketball.
This team without question has a number of good pieces. We should be able to defend well enough to be in games when shots aren't falling. Oso and Kur can finish around the rim. I actually think Ighodaro could really break out by next year. He's becoming much more fluid and confident. Anyway, this was a complete team performance and hopefully they can bottle what we saw tonight.

This

Not bad.
-
Really aggressive, connected and smart on defense (well, mostly smart; can't foul four 3-point shooters); and great mindset and execution on offense.
Kolek was outstanding getting the O into a great flow. Elliott also had 4 great passes, three leading to layups and the other setting up a wide-open 3.
Nice to see Kur back to impacting the defense. He was a non-entity in the UConn and Creighton losses. We need his presence.
Kam Jones will be this team's go-to guy next season. And maybe even later this season. We'll occasionally have to live with suspect shot selection, but I love his mentality.
So much fun to have a game like this. Very much needed it!
-
Fantastic start, and finish tonight. I expected Providence to make a run in the 2nd half, but MU kept them off balance. Reminded me of the Illinois game, but obviously much better offensively.
-
Very fun game! Big time W!
This team sucks.
-
I was car-jacked, shot and killed on the way to the game.
Did we score 50?
-
We’re solidly shaping up as one of those confusing teams on Selection Sunday that get the blind resume review. The good wins are accumulating and still not a bad loss.

I wouldn't say we slowed down. We did attack the paint more because our guys were able to beat their defenders both on and off the ball, they haven't been able to do that in past games. I do think as our guys get more experience, they are learning the difference between an okay shot and a good shot, meaning we're not taking the first three we see...but we still shot 23 of them. This has always been the system, we just finally got to see it when it is humming and it was beautiful.
-
Bump from 83 to 61 in Kenpom. Big time.
-
I was car-jacked, shot and killed on the way to the game.
Did we score 50?
Ha!
-
MU slowed it down and got very efficient. Lowest tempo game of the season and highest O efficiency. I noticed Nevada sitting next to Shaka all game and in his ear. Thank you.
MU flummoxed an All Big East Center, especially with Reeves out. Great defensive game plan.
JLew with a bounce back game. Played as an All Big Easter.
Let's build on this.
-
Awesome Win Merry Basketball Christmas!!
-
Haven't enjoyed a blowout like that in quite a while. Very impressive.
This got me thinking. With thanks to http://muoverload.com/, I found that tonight looks like our 6th Big East win by over 30. Second biggest ever. Something we've only seen 1 other time in over a decade.
Big East wins by >= 30
Buzz: January 4, 2009 - Cincinnati (34)
Shaka: January 4, 2022 - Providence (32)
Wojo: March 14, 2019 - Saint John's (32) [Big East Tourney]
Buzz: January 18, 2011 - DePaul (30)
Buzz: January 17, 2010 - Providence (30)
Crean: February 23, 2008 - Rutgers (30)
Big East losses by >= 30
Wojo: Villanova - March 12, 2015 (35) [Big East Tourney]
Wojo: Villanova - February 10, 2021 (32)
Buzz and Crean never lost a Big East game by more than 30. What I did notice is that Buzz's biggest loss ever (33 at Florida) and biggest Big East loss (25 to Louisville at MSG) are two road games I had the misfortune to attend.

Good stuff.
-
That defensive effort in the first half was very impressive. Everyone knew where they needed to be and where rotations took them. Nice to see from a young team.
-
Interesting….not even a peep (so far) this morning about the game in the Providence Journal.

JLew with a bounce back game. Played as an All Big Easter.
So you're saying, after Scoop crucified Justin, his game was resurrected three days later?

Loved the game plan. Getting points from the paint early established an offense and let the three's come later on. Also, stifling defense. Glad they kept the pedal down after getting a big lead.
-
Great to see a game where we didn't let the foot off the gas. I expected a Friar run in the second half as well, but instead of losing the second half but still winning the game, Shaka had them playing as aggressively at the end as he did at the start.
-
We’re solidly shaping up as one of those confusing teams on Selection Sunday that get the blind resume review. The good wins are accumulating and still not a bad loss.
Interestingly, according to NET, we do have a bad loss. St. Bonaventure. They are currently slotted at 113 in the NET and that makes them a Q3 loss. We currently rank as their best win of the season with their two other wins at Charleston slotted closely behind us. They got blown out by the only other two good teams they have played and dropped a game to 4-7 Northern Iowa (I think Lofton was out). Their wins over their cupcakes haven't exactly been convincing either. They've missed their last three games due to a COVID pause. Hopefully they can come back rested and win the A10 like they were picked to do preseason.

So many thoughts on last night...
- Came out like a fireball. In the postgame, Shaka said he told the team to play like Justin's hair. They were loose and all over the place on defense. Great communication.
- Loved the defense on Watson. He got a few buckets, but they really limited him in the post and I think the fouls drawn helped frustrate him on both ends. And holy crap is he a lazy defender. He would not play for this team with that level of defensive effort.
- Tyler might have a mediocre offensive rating, but boy does he make this offense run. 9 more assists and top-25 nationally in assist rate. He sees the floor so well and last night it was infections. 24 assists on 31 made baskets compared to just 6 on 19 for the Friars.
- Kam's spin cycle triple was a brilliant highlight. Thing of beauty. He has quietly been awesome in Big East play, ranked 5th in conference games in offensive efficiency.
- Oso is 1st in offensive efficiency in Big East games, #1 nationally in 2PFG%, and #14 nationally in offensive rating. He's having a 2018 Matt Heldt type season but with about double the usage. Another solid offensive game last night.
- Game of runs in the first half. 18-6 good guys to start, 12-4 response by PC, then the 20-0 to put it out of reach and put a stranglehold on the game.
- This was a fantastic metric win. So glad they didn't let up, though it was disappointing to see them go up by 37 only for PC to score the last 5 points because Marquette's previous biggest Big East margin of victory was 34 over Cincinnati 12 years ago to the day. Anyway...up 25 in kenpom, 26 in the NET, and 33 in Torvik overnight. Need to improve the conference record, but Marquette's computer numbers are finally into bubble territory.
- PC really missed Reeves tonight. They are undefeated when he scores a point and 0-2 when he doesn't. Not saying he would've made up a 32-point deficit, but I expect a (much) tougher contest at the Dunk if he's back and healthy.
- Really felt like we took our frustrations out on PC after being close against Xavier, UConn, and Creighton. They won't all be this easy, but it's fun to see what this team can be when the defense is doing what it's supposed to and we hit shots on the other end.
- Is there any question defense and deflections lead to offense, even when it isn't live ball turnovers? It was holding them to 6 points in the first 11 possessions (only three that resulted in points) that got us going and then absolute suffocation in the 20-0 run that kept fueling our offense.
- Really hope this is the start of something. Next two are very winnable. Get back to .500 in conference and we can fire up those NCAA dreams again.
-
After last night, I just had a sour taste on Watson. Always thought he was good, but with the beatdown we put on, he got angry and threw two elbows at different players, but nothing got called. I've seen that a few times that he swings them when angry.
However, great great game. Let's hope this sparks a run.
-
I’m really hoping this allows the team to relax a little bit. I’m thinking they were a little tight trying to get that first win. Hopefully this kicks off a great stretch.

Great summary, brew.
I know you weren't saying that Oso is only as good as Heldt or anything like that, but still seeing their names side-by-side made me chuckle.
As the 2017-18 season wound down, I felt one of the signs that we'd be good in 2018-19 would be if Heldt only played 5-10 mpg; well, after averaging 22 in 17-18, he ended up averaging 6 as we had a real good 18-19 season (till Hausershima).
Conversely, with Oso, I just want to see him play more and more. He's not quite a consistent defensive presence yet, but he's rapidly improving, and I really like his upside. I appreciated Heldt's hard work and team-first attitude -- it wasn't his fault he was the best 5 available in 17-18 -- but I don't know that anybody ever said "I really like his upside."

Sadly, there were folks on here that were excited about Heldt and his role on the team. That kind of goes hand in hand with the cult of low expectations. There are folks on here that would love nothing more than GE to flourish to be proven correct. I want GE to be a solid 10-15 minute guy and know his role. It is not because I do not GE to do well, it is like wanting Hedlt to play 6-8 minutes a game. It is a sign the program is going in the right direction.
-
Definitely just a statistical comparison in that both were pretty one-dimensional scorers on the inside but uber-efficient when called upon. I would take Oso 100/100 times over Heldt, but remembering Heldt ranking #2 in national offensive efficiency in 2018 still makes me laugh.
-
What I found interesting about the game was how lethargic PC looked for a ranked team. If that was solely due to MU putting the clamps down on defense that is a tremendous sign going forward. I said before the game I thought our defense was trending better, especially the half court defense. If we can play stifling defense like that consistently we can make the NCAAs without question. PC looked foolish and lazy out there. I really hope that was mostly MU.
I love our athleticism as well. Theo would be blocked by the rim on half the dunks that Oso makes easily. Very refreshing.

The difference is that Elliott does one thing better than most players in all of college basketball, and that one thing has become a crucial element to the game. Heldt was a tall guy who tried hard.
As I said, there will be games in which Greg either doesn't have it or isn't needed. But it's nice to know Shaka has an elite 3-point shooter at his disposal.
I don't know whether you're talking about me, but I don't want Greg to "flourish" any more than I want any other Marquette player to flourish. I want them all to flourish so the team flourishes. I did say that I thought it was dopey for some folks to be so willing to throw a 45% 3-point shooter into the trash can. Not saying you, but more than a few Scoopers felt that way. Thankfully, Shaka agreed that Greg had real value, and thankfully Greg agreed to come back.

Not having Reeves is a dent in their shot-making and passing ability. They have a ton of guys that can be the third or fourth best player, but no one else who can be Robin to Watson's Batman. I also think Watson is a guy that, if you take him out of his game, can turn from asset to liability in a hurry. Having Watson out of sorts and Reeves out period put a lot of pressure on the rest of their team and none of them have shown the ability to consistently step into that alpha role.

I'm not picking at any posters in this thread but I chuckle how giddy scoop is after wins like this vs. the posts after the last 4 games.

I wish we had wins like this more often.

Interesting….not even a peep (so far) this morning about the game in the Providence Journal.
There is an article for subscribers only.
Second newest article is one from yesterday morning titled "Friars are the hottest team in the Big East". ;D

It was Marquette’s biggest margin of victory versus a ranked team in Marquette Basketball history.

Cooley seems like a great dude and I kind of felt for him last night.
This was one of the best years in the programs history up to that point in the season and they were coming off of a lot of momentum, so a game like that is really painful.
He looked pained too.
I always love Shakas energy and I think it’s good for the program and the team, but I didn’t like that sprint out to mid court to give slap of the 5s for that reason. It was sort of near Providence’ bench when MU was throttling them, and Cooley is a class act.
Call me old fashioned, and I know coach Smart is allowed to get excited, but he should be a bit more mindful of these things going forward.

It was fine. I doubt Cooley gave it two thoughts. It's how Shaka coaches.
Anyway, I think Cooley knew his team was going to struggle with this game. Brian Butch mentioned that Cooley told him something like he hopes they are ready to play. I think in retrospect his concerns were legit.

I believe it was at the 4:14 mark of the first half, Ed Croswell fouled Justin Lewis. The arena was naturally silent as Justin was taking his free throws. Not sure if it came over the broadcast, but Cooley yelled "Ed, what the hell did you do?!?" at Croswell. My entire section started laughing and talking about what a good dude Cooley is. Absolutely hilarious.
-
Interesting fact brought up by the announcers was that Providence’s starting lineup is really old - the average age is 23*. To put it into perspective they are (on average) about 1.5 years older than the Oklahoma City Thunders starting 5. I guess they should be good.
Re Shaka’s enthusiasm - I generally like your posts Doctor V, but you are being old fashioned. And I’m 73.

That’s fair, I’m 38 I think.
I’m all about showing people up, but I don’t like doing it when I’m whoopin they arse. I really don’t like doing it when I’m the new guy in the room and the other guy is an established good guy.
I don’t think Shaka was intentionally showing anyone up. I actually think Shaka is a great guy and the other coaches in the conference will see that. He’s a very bright guy that seems to just get it and very rarely does the wrong thing, almost always does the right thing when it comes to respectability.
I’m just saying if I’m Ed I’m thinking “tone it down a touch there, chief. You’re walloping me as is.”
Instead Ed was probably thinking he wished a bat would come out and just cancel the rest of the game
-
I don't think showing enthusiasm is showing someone up.

He must’ve not talked to Vander Blue
-
I can guarantee Cooley was far more annoyed with his team getting throttled and not playing well. He was very excited when Shaka came to Marquette and said as much in the off-season. He’s a fan of the guy and I’m sure his enthusiasm and energy is part of the reason
-
The forum was quiet last night. Got some great audio courtside.
Cooley was hilarious. His commentary and f bombs cracked up our entire section behind bench. At 1 point in first half he said sarcastically after Oso scored “it’s the f-ing Harlem Globetrotters”.

Cooley said something last night to his team like You are making Marquette look like the Harlem Globetrotters and everyone started laughing too haha.
Watched the tape today and felt Shaka was on point during a timeout saying something like you can put it down on the floor too and be aggressive among other things. Marquette followed that timeout with a 20-0 run.

But PC sucks, MU clobbered them!
The comparison to the Thunder was interesting, but by the same stats MU's starting lineup average age was about the same as the Thunder - so I guess we're basically an NBA team :-\
edit: I'm a geek and like numbers...yesterday MUs starting lineup was an average age of 21 years, 3 months, and 10 days. In March of 2021, the Thunder started a lineup with an average age of 20 years, 8 months and 6 days.
