OK.....I will bring up the question no one wants to bring up.....
Clearly he is not a Shaka-type of athletic forward.....
He does have grit but he does not have other aspects of the game.....
He also "bowed out" when the team needed him the most......
Are we as a "Marquette community" OK with telling him that he will not be playing under the new regime and should look to transfer elsewhere......
Difficult discussion......But probably conversations that are going on behind the scenes as we speak......

Did he bow out? I thought someone may have mentioned something about him not being allowed to be in NYC.

What do you mean "bowed out" maybe don't make assumptions on stuff we don't know.

Big if true!

Big if true!
I guess Wojo was'nt considered part of "the "roster"......
Also I said: "are we as a Marquette community" and I mean essentially pulling a "Crean"?????
-
With 4 open scholarships, I don't think Shaka needs to free up any spots this year.
Everyone gets a chance this year to show what they've got. Then see what happens next year.

Is Shaka going to “buzz-cut” him? I would hope he’s honest and upfront with him about playing time possibilities and make it a meritocracy.

You need to step down. Let Shaka decide who plays for him.

Welcome to MUScoop, Shaka. We're also known as the Coaching Combine for MU Men's Basketball. Very little gets done in the men's program without it being approved and acted upon here first (or maybe second, or last, or sometime), so just go with the flow emanating from here, and you should do as well as can be expected (or maybe not. You'll soon find out.).

A silly criticism of Wojo were his time out talks.
And yet, so incredibly warranted — a prescient warning of what was to come. Stiff.

We do not really know, if Perez is or is not Shaka's kind of player. I suspect he is not going to start for Shaka and maybe he will not even play significant time. However, he is a very decent player to have coming off the bench when you need the 11th man to contribute. Not everyone is going to play, but having somebody in the 11th through 13th roster spot that actually can contribute, if needed, is a valuable member of the team.
-
Hell, he barely played for Woj. Only played the time he did because other guards sucked ass so badly. Adios and next man up, hey?
-
Considering Lewis and Garcia (hopefully) will be considered Freshman this year, we will likely have a lot of guys in that class already. Getting rid of Perez and signing another Freshman will lead to imbalance down the road. If they were going to replace Perez, it would have to come from another upperclassmen I would imagine. In any case, I’d be very surprised if Perez saw any significant minutes next year.
-
Is Shaka going to “buzz-cut” him?
I believe the correct term is "Shake him loose"

Why are we considering that J Lew and DG will be considered Freshmen?

Whoa whoa whoa! When the hell did this happen? Perhaps Coach Smart isn't interested in your opinion on personnel matters but many here believe their counsel to be both insightful and impactful.
Advice from the uninformed can be just as meaningful as those from one with actual knowledge. The words of a fool who presupposes wisdom is a lighthouse that cuts through the fog to steer the ship away from the shoals of disaster and Scoop has many such experts. Coach Smart would do well to check on Scoop periodically to hear these pearls of wisdom to inform his stewardship of our beloved Warrior program.
-
Why are we considering that J Lew and DG will be considered Freshmen?
All players got a year that didn't count towards their eligibility this year.
We don't know if that's going to be heavily done or not at the high level schools.
So far it seems Marquette told all seniors to take a hike.
-

Again, the assumption is that Shaka will only bring in high-4-stars and 5-stars, that he doesn't need or want any role players, any guys who are "good in the room," etc.
So adios to Perez, Oso, Elliott, Akanno, Kam Jones ... because Shaka is gonna have 8 or 9 new 5-stars playing alongside DJ, Garcia, Lewis and Mitchell this season.
Can't wait to see us win the 2021 national title, nu?!?!

Correct. Those that defended Wojo against the criticism used the argument that he said something meaningful, or tactical, or strategic in the nontelevised portion of the TO.
Results on the floor didn't support that opinion.

I didn't really "defend" what he said in the cuddles. What I said was that years and years of watching the cuddles of coaches from all over the country never gave one iota of insight into any real strategy or motivational stuff. Whether we're talking about K or Beard or Self or Cal or Wright or Wojo or any of 'em ... it was all just a few seconds of coach-speak every time.
So of all the things to criticize Wojo for, him saying the same dopey coach-stuff that everybody else did seemed ridiculous IMHO.

How dare you suggest that Wojo's televised time out exhortations were without merit!
Hearing Wojo implore his charges to, "Play hard! You gotta play hard!" took me straight back to Fallujah. I was ready to kick some ass, I tell you!

Those "reallys" ... now THOSE were inspiring cuddles!

Word is that the thought of having to deal with IWB scared the sh1t out of Shaka and chased him away. It took him 7 years to realize that 'IWB as a concept' is nothing more than a dozen guys pontificating about Marquette Hoops to each other.
Frankly, it will take Shaka a New York second to realize that Scoop offers no particular insight on anything, much less college basketball. If taken in the tongue-in-cheek spirit in which it should be intended then he will see that it is a benign outlet for the ill-informed and the Great Unwashed.

Unwashed is, well, unwashed. In the same manner as pregnancy.
Unfortunately, the cure for being either ill-informed or unwashed is hardly to immerse oneself in a milieu characterized by ignorance, sloth, vulgarity, unbridled braggadocio, contentiousness, false humility, intense anger, despair, or unrighteous indignation.
One does not remove fecal matter from one's flesh by bathing in a sewer.

Flipping through channels this morning, Joel Osteen was on. That dude really creeps me out. Looks bat sh1t crazy.
In the .8 seconds it took me to flip to the next channel, Osteen described the unenlightened as a bunch of “uncircumcised Philistines”.

The credit that I’ll give Osteen is that he’s reasonable progressive for a televangelist and he makes the majority of his money through books. He skirts around that “prosperity gospel” but is at least moral enough to not plunge into it feet first.
Hardcore prosperity doctrine guys like Kenneth Copeland (who I think may actually be pure evil), Creflo Dollar, and Jesse Duplantis are worth 9 figures (Copeland is worth half a billion with a B) purely telling people that they are prophets and preaching how God wants them to be wealthy. Their respective defense of private jets funded by their congregations is WILD

Good reason not to tax churches:
Most churches are small and have little money. They operate on very tight budgets. The rich megachurches, which are the vast minority, can afford to pay taxes and would probably use the taxes as fundraising rallying cry.
So the taxes would hurt small churches the most, and the megachurches, which are the supposed target of the proposed tax, would largely be unaffected. If small churches are forced to close for financial reasons as a result of taxes, more people would turn to the megachurches.
The real problem is people not seeing these megachurches for what they are. If people want to donate to a church, they should be a little more discerning with their money and donate to a smaller, community focused church.
-

Really? He funnels everything through his ministry, which is tax exempt. You might want to do some digging on all the scams the televangelists run.

OK, so you make the tax code for churches progressive, just as it is supposed to be for people.
The little church pays no taxes. The megachurch is in the mega bracket.

After the last two days.....
Do you now know why I asked the question.....
Bates and Aidoo are still out there.....
The walk-on scholly is certainly gone.....
But we have players clamoring to play for Shaka......
MU in a very good recruiting situation......
I also think it is interesting he is going young with players that want to play for him, his system, and the university.....
Very little and nothing to this point out of the transfer portal......

as George Carlin once said, we could wipe out the national debt by taxing the Catholic Church on their real estate holdings alone.
Don't forget, he refused to open his church buildings to people impacted by the hurricanes a few years ago, while a dude who owned a mattress store did.
And now, back to MU basketball.

Yes, the one thing I was worried about was that most of Shaka's recruits at Texas were in state. It brings up the potential that Texas itself is the magnet and not Shaka all the time. Otherwise Shaka doesn't seem to have a pipeline all over the country which would designate him as an elite recruiter. That was a huge question mark for me about him at MU - how much of his ability to recruit would take a hit here? So far it's a non issue, but I will be wary until we get an out of state player that's top 50/top 100. Curious to see if Shaka will be limited at MU. Hopefully that's not the case.

There is a good chance he is more useful than you think he is. The team is currently made up of 5 true freshmen, five second year freshmen and one third year freshmen, That is 11 players classified as freshmen. Of that group only Garcia and Lewis can be counted on to contribute significantly in Big East. Elliot, Carton and Perez are are the old people on the team.

Sophomores?
One junior?
Akanno redshirted and then hardly played. Oso hardly played. The one transfer from Clemson(?) hardly played for Clemson. Add them to the 5 real freshmen and that is eight very inexperience players who are considered freshmen eligibility wise. The question is how many of them will be ready to play in the Big East? There are 11 players on this team that could play another four years.

Despite laughing at your Frosh designations, that is an astonishing thing to imagine. It will be interesting to see how many 2020 Frosh use their extra year in the end.
Honestly, I'll be surprised if we have 4 of the incoming frosh + sophs total in 4 years.

I won’t argue with that, Lenny. But other than the queen, it would be hard to find someone in the royal family that isn’t. And that probably goes for other royal families in Europe.

Marquette's roster is far from being finalized, so a lot of this conjecture is premature.
As has been previously alluded to your classifications of "second year freshmen" are in fact classified as sophomores and the "third year freshmen" that you mentioned is in fact classified as a junior.
Although, it is true that all student athletes that participated last year in NCAA winter sports including men's basketball will have an extra year of eligibility, it remains to be determined the extent of the players that will use the option of the extra year of eligibility.

Also, the option of the extra year of eligibility will significantly affect many programs, not just Marquette.

Do you watch The Crown on Netflix? You may have a differing opinion. It's much more complicated than this statement.
-
The Crown really makes Prince Charles look like a wussy. When the Queen dies there will be very little respect for him.

Lol, that sentiment has little to do with the Netflix show. Charles has never been well-loved. When the queen dies it will be a great time to tear down the monarchy.
-
The Crown is a drama based on real events. It’s not necessarily historical fact.
It will be interesting when the Queen passes. There’s always the rumor Charles abdicates to William, but I’m guessing that wouldn’t be the Queen’s wishes based on her sense of duty.

Oh I agree with you. It’s just funny how bad they make him look.

I hope Perez sees this thread because he never dreamed he would have a five page thread on scoop.

Watching Perez run the court made me wonder if he has problems with his feet.
I have to think that Perez looks like Usain Bolt compared with how Prince Charles must run. I understand the Prince of Wales purses his lips while cavorting around the Polo Pitch with a loping gait.
Now, Andrew can run all day and never break a sweat. Blue Blood maintains a patrician nobility of temperature control that we plebeians neither possess nor comprehend. I understand that he also does not perspire while fornicating with teenaged girls, even while engaging in especially vigorous exertions.

Well done.

I won’t argue with that, Lenny. But other than the queen, it would be hard to find someone in the royal family that isn’t. And that probably goes for other royal families in Europe.
They're all so inbred, its really the same family.

True. Kirk Cousins doesn't get near as much cousin-love as the cousins in Europe.

Sometimes this board is goofy...
I can never be guarantee to open a thread and read anything closely related to what the title thread says!
It wastes a lot of time...lol
What does any of this have to do with Perez?

Home of the Saga Relief Meal.
Did they name a sammie after Charles? Or Perez, for that matter?
The Le Royale avec TRO. Don't come within 500 feet!

I think we've got one available if Garcia is back. Two if Garcia leaves...assuming the Scholarship Table was accurate before the Perez announcement.

Glad for Jose. He definitely has the mental skills - just didn't think his physical skills were High-major ready.

Yeah, we were back to even once Carton announced he was leaving. Perez leaving gives us an opening, and if Garcia leaves, we'll have two openings.
I think Perez's shoes get filled pretty quickly, but I don't think it'll be Morsell. I have a gut feeling that Garcia leaves in July, and Morsell is announced soon thereafter. Mark it down!

I really don't know - if that previous flurry of incoming transfers last month is any clue, it'll be a complete surprise and not someone an insider tweeted as having heard from us.
I also wonder if we'll see a new "batch" of players hitting the portal now that the semesters are ending, so it could very well be someone who hasn't even announced yet.
As you can tell, and as is the case with everyone on this board, I have no clue. But hey, guessing is fun!

i don’t disagree re: Garcia. I don’t see him drafted. However, working on his game against pros in the G-League is better than against college boys. No pizazz in the minors, but can’t fault him if that’s his plan. (btw, hoping he returns to MU for one more go)

I watched Henry struggle against athletic 6'8 guys in the G-league. Please list the ways that Garcia is better than Henry.

He gets the slightly less easy rebounds 😉
But more seriously I don't cringe every time Garcia shoots from beyond the arc and say "his form is great so he's going to hit one eventually"

Chill. I didn’t bring up Henry. You did. And I don’t think Garcia is better than Ellenson. Where you goin’ with this?

Now that MU may have 2 openings, there will be a lot of disappointed kids not going to the NBA, probably another group will be in the transfer portal who are pretty good, I was Shaka I would then pounce. Only a short window before school starts in the fall

Good thing that restraining order expired so he could enter the city limits.

Good luck, Jose.
Restraining order is in the pantheon of all time worst scoop takes.

How did I miss that? Wow.

For me it will be interesting to see how our transfers out do at their new schools.
If they perform well at their new schools than I was underrating our talent level.
-
Who are you thinking fill Perez's shoes?
His shoes will be easy to fill.
His body armor? That may pose a problem.
Good luck with the Jaspers, Jose.

Per Ben Steele's article today it sounds like he and Shaka aren't exactly amicable.
That said, necessary pain point of a new coach and new system

Perez:

Peter Principle Perez was fortunate to spend one season at MU

I get it. It is what it is though.
Anyway, I hope he gets a waiver to play immediately.
-
I didn't realize he was 6'5". Somehow in the limited run he got he gave me the impression that he was more compact, stockier. More of a Cadougan (6'1"ish) build.
-
Perez:
"New coach came in and said what he had to say...It is what it is. It's a business."
Yes, it is a business.
Doesn't mean Shaka is a "bad guy" for saying what he had to say. Doesn't mean Jose is a "bad guy" for say the above. (Nor did you say or imply that either is a bad guy, Lazar.)
-
In the old days, we'd say that Perez got "buzz-cut." I would Akanno and Perez in the "out-Smarted" category.
-
"New coach came in and said what he had to say. People love him. Can't say nothing about him. It is what it is. It's a business."
Perez seemed a bit slow that wouldn't match up-tempo D Shaka plays.
That being said, I feel like he crushes it at Manhattan.
-
Jose will do well against teams where he is one of the taller guys on the court. He had little chance again bigger, more athletic players.
That being said, I doubt we saw anywhere near the best of what Jose can offer. I wish him the best. I hope his spot goes to a big time transfer that can help immediately, because we need it for next season.

Started this thread knowing this was going to happen.....
Shaka wants a certain "skill set" and Perez was not "that".....
Yes.....It is what it is.....
Perez seems like he wanted to stay.....But Shaka probably had to have that "frank talk"
Every team goes through this when a new coach wants to bring in his "system".....
I wish the kid well.....Clearly Wojo was desperate to fill out the roster......
In my opinion Perez was fringe at most D1 Big 6 conference player.....
