Revisiting MU Unis
« on: November 01, 2022, 07:29:20 PM »
I just added to my MU gear collection, although I will have to alter my quarter zip Camo shirt.  Anyhow, it made me think about our unis.  It seems to me the Scoop community is pretty meh about them and as I wrote a few months ago, I think we need a swat analysis and then an upgrade.

Marquette University stands alone as the beacon for the greatest assortment of unis/jerseys in any sport, in every decade, since the United States has fielded teams.  Now, while this is irrefutable, I think the powers that be, in 2023 and forward, need to take this into consideration.   We must put together a creative team imo and go back to owning the best unis.  It's non-negotiable.  Can we revamp and reintroduce a modern untucked jersey?

The untucked jerseys were way ahead of their times…… but aren’t they still banned?

Untucked jerseys are not permitted.  I do not believe the op-art pattern is permitted, either.   So, ok.   Short shorts?   Satin finish?

I find this fascinating as now the younger set is really into untucked shirts.  Hey, I kinda like it and wear my shirts that way but not at work.  (Sorry I'm a geezer MD Gen X.)  There is a brand of shirts for Untucked.  Marquette  has a real and cool fashion history here.  Why not use it and be proud of it?  After a dunk to seal a victory I hope one of the players of the current team pulls his jersey out and leaves it untucked as he walks to the bench........

Why is this still the case?  Can we not appeal this nonsense and get a competent attorney?

Boomers made Untuckit a success (unplanned) to hide their expanding girths. As to the NCAA and their silly (and historically racist) uniform rules, unnatural carnal knowledge ‘em.

My understanding is that MU is sponsored by Jumpman and they do the designs. I do not know how much input MU has.

Basketball requires tucked in jerseys so defenders don’t get their hands or fingers entangled in their shirts. It’s that way at all levels.

The untucked jerseys are best left to history. Let’s blaze a new trail.

I kind of always felt like that was the excuse they made to force players to tuck em in.

I liked the grays.  I thought they needed blue and gold piping, like William Murray golf does with the Murray clan tartan.   I would own a polo, rugby, or quarter zip of a design like that.

That was O’Tule.

Seriously, futbol, tennis, golf, volleyball, etc. all have the untucked shirts now with the tailored style. The bumble bees are readable and allowable in soccer but not basketball. The Georgetown T Shirt, etc.  It is another overlegislated rule by a hypocritical organization out of touch with the times whose rule origin was racially based. This should be sunshined.

As long as we are doing SWOT analysis, can one be done the entrance song?   U2 is old, stale, overrated, boring….   You fill in your descriptor…

I think you're grasping at straws. How often did that actually happen during MU's untucked years?  I don't mind blazing new trails but jersey entanglement is a bit of a stretch.

I like the ones we currently have more than what they first looked like on the spirit shop website, but the last two sets of uniforms we've had are still the two of the three worst we've had in my lifetime (03-07 being the worst).

A modernized version of 71-74 would be incredible.  Modernized versions of 68-73 or 81-83 would be great as well.  Modernized versions of 2011, 73-76, 93-94, or 01-03 would be solid as well.

We need a marketing and design team.  Not sure about the one-piece but as Wade stated we have to-do better.  These are among the worst unis we've had since 2003-7.

The t-shirt rule was not racially based. In 1981-82 Patrick Ewing wore a gray t-shirt while getting over a cold, and he stuck with it. Towards the end of the next season, Nike sent over some t-shirts with their logo on the sleeve and that's when the NCAA blew the whistle.

T-shirts are legal if they are the same color and do not interfere with the jersey as a whole. But in 2022, they're out of style and college kids don't see the need.

Thank you for the clarification. The whole "racially based" accusation was crazy. It was the NBA that didn't allow them underneath but eventually relented. The main uniform restrictions the NCAA has involves colors and size and the number of manufacturer logos.

As for T's, on the men's side, yes, they are rare. However, they are very popular in women's hoops. What I don't understand is the players who wear full sleeves in games (e.g. Jordan King from MU women, Addye-Wusu from St. John's, Chris Paul did this a few times when he was with the Clippers).

See Rupp, Adolph.

And if folks don't think the push back on the Georgetown starter jackets, Kente cloth or the gray t shirts weren't John Thompson's statement, you are being naive.

Come on, the tshirts were banned (later the rule was amended) because of a Nike logo?  When shoes and jersey's had them as the schools cashed in?  A Patrick Ewing head cold?

2011 is Way too recent plus 11-14 was a modernized version already and 08-14 was essentially a modernized version of 71-74 blues.

I'd be all about a modernized version of the others though.

A) let me know when the NCAA banned Starter jackets and Gtown’s unis. And, B) t-shirts weren’t banned, they just couldn’t have logos on them. They also had to match the color of the jersey. Chris Mullin had to follow the same rule at St. John’s.So racist.
