Another scenario where Howard was forcing a bit, but still scored 31. Got to the line making 10/11. Clutch basket at the end and free throws. Honorable mention to Jayce.

Koby - Made key plays at critical stage of game. Fouls he drew were critical down the stretch and he converted at the line.

Jayce as runner up.

Jayce

Until his late offensive rebound, Theo had two rebounds for the entire game.  They were both  on missed free throws. His inability to rebound the basketball is killing us.  Completely different defensively when Jayce is in, typically one n done for the opponent. Hopefully, todays minutes distribution is a sign of things to come

I feel like Koby and Markus drew a lot of those as well.

They did but DU had to pay attention to Jayce versus hedging up to double. Both Markus and Koby were able to penetrate the seams. On offense, Reed was pretty much a non-factor. Coming into the game, Pudner’s value-add had Reed as BE POY.

Jayce’s impact can be more on spacing than on stats.

Howard kept us in it in the first and sealed it at the end. Johnson & McEwen were huge helps, but if you use the "if any other player ever did what Markus did today would be SOTG?" the answer is a resounding yes.

So Markus.

Markus' 26 would not have mattered if Jayce did not step up big time.

Jayce. Case could be made any game Markus plays because even in off games, he scores so much.  But he went first 14 minutes without a point in the 2nd half.  That’s too big of chunk of game to give it to him this time.

Jayce was really solid on both ends, rebounded well as always; needed all of his performance to come out with W today.

Markus played all 40 minutes while wearing a mask that had to be a little disconcerting.

He was the only guy we had who could hit a shot, had 4 assists, helped seal it late, only 2 TOs, even had 1 more blocked shot than Jayce.

It's not close.

Exactly. People get too caught up in a player's performance relative to their expected output. Jayce was very good even relative to what he normally adds. Markus was ultimately the player who provided the most throughout the game. MU was struggling overall when he was not scoring in the second half.

I voted Markus but disagree with all the people saying that it's not even close.  Markus scored 8 points in the last 2:30 (6 of which were from the line), say those points got split up between Koby and Sacar (they've certainly proved they can be clutch too), Markus would have finished with 23 points.  Still most on the team, but considering that he had either 19 or 21 at half (I can't remember) it would have meant that we made our comeback largely without him scoring (he did have a few nice dimes).  Now Markus did score those points down the stretch so he's more than deserving, but if a SOTG is still up for grabs with 2:30 left to play then I think a fairly strong argument can be made that is not in fact "not even close".

Jayce

Charlie Moore - he’s awesome

Wojo - was fortunate to get invited to sit in some pretty incredible seats today. Almost every timeout Prusetti (I think) goes over to the ref and has a nice, polite, calm discussion with the refs (I think I saw some of this from Killings from his “mic’d up” section on Inside Marquette a few years ago and he talked to the refs about what they’re seeing and nicely asked them to watch whatever...). At about the 10ish minute mark Wojo snapped at the ref going into the TO, the ref snapped back and looked like he wanted Wojo to elevate it and T him up, Wojo stepped that way but just turned and went back into the huddle. I remember DePaul having 3 team fouls at the time. Very quickly we were in the double bonus.

I think it's also the 40 minutes and the busted face thing that make it not even close. Jayce played 17 minutes, not even close to Markus, and I'm pretty sure he wasn't wearing a mask.

What facial accessories you may or may not be wearing should have no impact on SOTG.  Also, yes, Markus played all 40, but I kinda wished he hadn't.  There were more than a couple of possessions where Markus ran down, sat in the corner, and didn't move for 30 seconds.  If you're gonna just take possessions off, do it tactfully by subbing out just before a media TO.

It wasn't so much the mask as it was the busted face, and I'm guessing during those extra 23 minutes Markus at least had to play defense in between loafing on offense.

If it was stud of less than half of the game, then yeah, it would be close.

It wasn't so much the mask as it was the busted face, and I'm guessing during those extra 23 minutes Markus at least had to play defense in between loafing on offense.

If it was stud of less than half of the game, then yeah, it would be close.

Once again, I voted for Markus (as much as you can vote in a dictatorship), because he earned it down the stretch, however, for the first 17:30 of the second half, he did only score 2 points (side note, had we lost, how much would people be ripping him for that).  My whole point is, had he not hit 1 shot + 6 fts in the last 150 seconds, a very strong case can be made for Jayce.  Minutes played are a very small factor in SOTG, Bailey was 2nd in minutes played, and played fine defense from what I saw, but he was no where near stud worthy.

I'm half messing with you, but seriously, Markus also has to deal with being the focus of the other teams defense so sometimes his drop in production could be a consequence of that unwanted attention. Jayce was great today but i don't think DePaul game planned specifically to stop him.

I mean, I dont disagree, but I also dont really think the scouting report is at all relevant.  I doubt K-State had any clue who Jamal Cain was, and he earned his that game.

It's just another degree of difficulty Markus has to deal with, but I respect the hell out of a player that can legitimately challenge Markus for SOTG. I think more guys have to do it if Marquette is going to do anything special this season.

I want to say Jayce because he was beastly at times, but it's Markus. We would have been dead in the water without him the first half.

I thought Markus really did a good job of getting others involved in the 2nd half which I’m sure was by design so well done Wojo. He draws so much attention that if he can get the pass off there is almost certainly going to be an open look. And he would have had 3 or 4 more dimes if guys could make open shots. Guys not making their open looks off his passes will cost him a few spots in the draft.

I cringed a bit when he started to hero ball about 5 minutes left. That drive into the trees which was stuffed down his throat was awful - but fortunately a W is a W and he’s the STOG

Another reason I voted Jayce is he was super efficient, 5/5 FG in 19 minutes. He made most of every opportunity amd finished some difficult plays. Those weren’t all gimme baskets by any measure.

Markus was 33% from 3pt. His shot selection was not good in the first half either. Hiz 21 in that half was of course critical because no one other than Jayce was stepping up offensively, but he was also part of the reason the offense struggled in the first half too and Wojo had to change their approach in his halftime adjustments.

Wojo I thought coached a good game yesterday too. The halftime adjustment on offense and especially switch to zone late were critical. We finally started stringing together stops in zone.

The game was won at the line. Markus and Koby were a combined 21 for 24.  The rest of the guys chipped in admirably at 8 for 11.  In crunch time, Markus forced his way there.  And we won as a result combined with some quality stops in the zone.  M2N.

Guys not making their open looks off his passes will cost him a few spots in the draft.

NBA scouting is a lot more sophisticated and thorough than you think. Whether Markus averages 3 assists or 5 assists is not going to mean a thing to GMs and scouts who have been and will continue to analyze every minute of video on every potential draft target.

They will not just look at stat sheets and say, "Howard averaged only 3 assists while Player B averaged 4.5 assists, therefore we prefer Player B." They will analyze video and say, "That was a nice drive and dish by Howard even though #25 missed the shot," and then they will try to project if Markus will be able to make similar plays in the NBA.

I believe that makes 30 career SOTG awards for Markus.  That needs to be on the back of his card right above all-time leading MU scorer.

Does anyone know the record for fewest minutes played while winning SOTG?

I think* it is:
Howard 30
Crowder 15
Gardner 13
Rowsey 12
Hauser 11

*meaning I looked but didn't exactly do a thorough job adding them up
