Barry Alvarez's Thoughts On MU Hiring a New Coach

http://www.wisn.com/sports/barry-alvarez-shares-thoughts-on-marquettes-search-for-basketball-coach/25166064

Alvarez has spent years building the Badgers football program in Madison, and he knows a thing or two about the inner workings of coach negotiations.

"It's a very, very delicate situation," Alvarez said.

Alvarez hired both former coach Bret Bielema and current coach Gary Andersen. Both decisions were well guarded.

"A good coach doesn't allow it to be public because if he doesn't get the job, or things aren't quite right, then he's in trouble where he is," Alvarez said.

Looking at the ongoing Marquette search, Alvarez has some advice for the final candidate.

"In the end, you really have to look at what you really want, what's the best fit for you, what's the best for your profession, what do you want to accomplish," Alvarez said.

Typically, any type of a move up the coaching ladder means more money, but he said if it's a primary motive, it's not good for anyone.

"I think if you're coaching for money, you're in it for the wrong reasons," Alvarez said. "It's gotten so out of hand, and the number is up there, and you have to be competitive, but there are other factors -- the quality of life, the league that you're in, how competitive can you be, what's your recruiting base?"

In regards to Buzz Williams' departure from Marquette, Alvarez said it didn't faze him and that it's really no big deal.

Hmmm... seems to me, what we haven't heard is what's going to happen.  Good coaches keep it under the radar.  You could relate this to Shaka Smart.  Who else out there could be a viable candidate? Chris Collins anyone?

He's right, and the department should keep it under the radar too.  I have to think they are beyond furious at what happened on Monday.

pretty reliable source in the hoops business says shaka to mu=not gonna happen.  has not been able to recruit midwest talent and badmouthing chicago a few years ago probably hurt.  said if we don't get a players coach here to stay, we will lose burton and fischer who in his opinion are future pros.

P--- on Alvarez. He's a dinosaur. He proved it in the 2013 Rose Bowl.

You really have to ask?

Not the hire we need right now and outside of Duke fans, not really well regarded....

He has a solid recruiting class coming this year and seems to recruit Chicago well.  That's definitely a good pedigree for an MU coach.

"seems to recruit chicago well"  ?

i checked vcu's previous few years rosters and no one from chicago, and not a real big presence in the midwest.  not saying he wouldn't have been a good fit for mu; i would have loved to see his style of play here!

I'm not sure where you get VCU from.  I mentioned Chris Collins, the coach @ Northwestern.
