Title: 2021 PGA
Post by: tower912 on May 20, 2021, 11:38:33 AM
What do you think you would shoot from the 7800 yard tips in a decent wind?     I have more rounds under par than over 80 this year, but I don't think I would break 100.      I don't think this is going to be a bomb and gouge tournament.

A bomber or someone who plays in a lot of wind from Texas / Foreign  may be good choices

The wind changes everything.  I usually play to around a 7-8 by early summer.  A few years ago, I played the Blackwolf River course from the blacks which is like 7400, on a nice day, and got my ass kicked to the tune of like 89 and I didn't play that bad.  Add another 400 yards and wind and PGA conditions?  I would comfortably add 20 strokes to that.

Brown Deer Park is like 6900 from the blacks if I recall.  Which is no joke.  Add another 50 yards to each hole and suddenly you're hitting long irons on almost every approach.  Gross.

LOL, given that I only started playing last year and I have to play from the women's tees (because, weaker sex), I think playing from the tips on the Ocean Course would be pretty ugly.  It would be like Kevin Na all over again, but on every hole.

Great bounce back for Koepka after the immediate double to start the round.

I had a hunch this week could be his comeback to form. Hopefully he holds up all weekend love watching him.

If your 89 from the tips was at the River Course, it is a big time round for a 7-8 handicap.

Maybe so  8-)  I was playing well at the time and I putted REALLY well.  Incredible course.  Last time I played Brown Deer was very much the opposite.

I play Brown Deer 15-20 times a year from the tips and it gets longer for me every year. I played the Valley at Blackwolf a couple of weeks ago and moved up to the greens. It was a bit short but was first time out for the year.

I've heard Kiawah is  absolutely brutal in the wind.  Who's 2nd in the clubhouse right now?  Lefty will likely have the lead if it's a sustained wind all afternoon.  Wow....just wow.

I think these guys have skills I can't fathom.   I think one or two manage their way around.   I think Phil will be either tie first or one shot off the lead.

I know you're usually right Tower but I'm going to say Phil will be 2 shots clear of the lead.  I'm pretty sure the back 9 is considerably harder.  Obviously these guys are maestros with the sticks but I just think the wind will win this afternoon if it's 20-30 mph.

It would be less amazing if he didnt pretty much literally say he only cares about majors.  He's one of the top 5-10 golfers in the world.  He just doesnt really throw it into full gear until the big tourneys

Kiawah isn't all that far from me and I thought, "Might be cool to play it someday."

Not only does it look brutally difficult, but it's also $463 for a round.

I am barely good enough to justify a $63 round, let alone one $400 more than that!

I’m doing Sand Valley, Mammoth Dunes, Lawsonia (36) and Erin Hills next month.  💸💸💸💸💸

It’s an indulgence for sure and my game won’t match up to those tracks but the experience alone will be worth it.

Kiawah is on my list of must plays even though I know it would kick my tail.

Agree 100%

I came somewhat late to golf but can now play year round so have gotten to an above average level.  But even when I was a +15, and was lucky enough to play some "pro level" courses, I generally thought they were more fun.  Now of course the people you play with have a lot to do with your enjoyment but from my perspective the best courses are in the best condition, which helps all levels from all tee boxes.  I think it's worth splurging a few times a year to go to these venues.  Just being out there is fun.

Who ya got to slam the door on this Major?  I read the back 9 could be with the wind Sunday which would make the course considerably less stressful under pressure.  Anyhow....I'm not sure who to root for after Lefty?

If the wind stays down, one of the leaders is going to get to -8 or -9.   If it increases as the day goes on, -6 or 7 leads.    Somebody going out in the morning is going to shoot a 67 and throw themselves in the mix.

The only way someone at even wins is if there is no wind until about 4:00 EDT.   They get in with a 68 or so and watch the leaders melt in the wind.

There will be no wind basically in the morning but at most it will get to 12-13 in the afternoon.  But apparently the wind will be coming the opposite direction.  I think there are several guys with the firepower to tear up the course early.  De Charcuterie is only 5 off the lead.

With Stricker and Harrington tied, they should be paired up and put something on the side.    Like a free Captain's pick.   Or the loser has to wear the other team's colors on the first day.

Stricker can still swing it.  I watched him for about 20 mins at the University Ridge range.  It's beyond belief how good these guys are.  He was hitting targets like Rowsey shot free throws.

Mickelson got through three rounds with decent scores each day. He has the ability to shape shots in the wind, so I think he will be there at the end. Koepka and Oosthuizen also strike the ball so pure, so they are good wind players as well. I think the winner will come from one of these guys.

Your wants have very little to do with the outcome.   The low round for the week is 67.   It would be a shocker if somebody shoots better than that today.   The odds of all three of the leaders spitting the bit is slim.   All 3 know how to win.

I hope somebody makes Phil sweat because I love a dramatic finish, but if not this is a tremendous story. If Phil holds on to win, it might end up being the top sports story this year, and that hole-out from the bunker will be a legendary shot.

I thought there was a bit of gagging Herman to be quite honest.  I just didn't expect all those loose shots.  It's possible the fans being back played a role?  Now the wind did change , but no one really shot a great round that was in contention.

I wouldn't call it gagging. Two groups of people in the final group, those with a lot to lose, and those with nothing to lose. The first group played it safe, leaving few birdie opportunities. The second group was aggressive, some of those it worked for and they put up lower scores, others it backfired, and they dropped back.

That may be accurate. Koepka complaining about his knee and the crowd seems pretty lame.

Almost 51 year old beats all the young guns on the longest course (7850 yards) ever at a major. And he was driving it as far as Brooks, Bryson and Rory. F’ing amazing.

Saw them put up the stat that he had the longest drive out of everyone on the Par 5 16th, damn impressive.

I've always liked Phil, really happy for him.

I’m a little surprised how Koepka has performed down the stretch the last few majors he’s been in contention. He was a borderline robot and just imposed his will when winning. But lately he seems to be pretty rattled and struggled when he was in contention.

I don’t know how much is the knee or he’s feeling pressure now that he’s the hunted.

Regardless if his knee got dinged by crowds like he talked about, he’s barely 2 months from a non-minor knee surgery on his knee cap and ligaments.  He had trouble moving well at the Masters.  The fact that he was contending this week is frankly pretty remarkable. He’s not been healthy consistently since 2019 which I think has contributed to some of his results.

The announcers kept saying he had a hard time getting through the ball with his swing because of the knees. If that ends up sapping a little bit of his confidence and commitment it could end up costing him a stroke a round .
Which is the difference between winning and second.

Were you watching him squat to read putts?   That showed the range of movement and strength he currently has in his right knee?
It was his force of will that got him that far.   He has a lot of work to do before Torrey Pines.

I was watching on my phone on a plane, so didn’t have a great view. I had forgotten about his injuries. Plus, for some reason I thought his wins were more dominant in the final round.

All in all, not my greatest take. The price you pay when using a faulty memory.

Guys like him already have generational wealth secured. They are all about the majors and their "legacy," nu?

As someone who actually likes both of them, this is hysterical. Koepka’s lack of filter and inability to put on any sort of facade when it comes to any antiquated “etiquette” make him a great interview.  The blatantly loud “clack clack” was just perfect

Brooks called out Bryson for slow play a few years ago.    Bryson confronted him.    Stylistically, they are oil and water.    Bryson is so meticulous in his course prep, pre tournament prep, and then shot prep.     Brooks is more along the lines of 'see ball hit ball.
Two things I have contemplated before.    1.   Is a secondary reason for Bryson bulking up to keep Brook from kicking his ass?
2.   Was Phil's pre shot routine also an attempt to slow play Koekpa?

Anyway, looking forward to the first time Brooks and Bryson are in the final group together on Sunday.     And, if Phil can make the Ryder Cup team, he should be paired with Bryson.

Finally, I watched that video three times and laughed harder each time.

I really like Koepka. His GQ interview awhile back painted a great picture of him. He reminds me of Cutler a bit, but Koepka wears it better because he doesn't play a team sport.  Also I think Koepka has much more invested in his own success than Cutler, but at the same time, I wouldn't be surprised to see him walk away from the game earlier than most that have had his level of success.

I think Koepka also made some comments about DeChambeau looking for relief from “fire ants” in a tournament not too long ago.

I think Koepka can be a choad at times but thought that video was hilarious.

And then there were none.

I think Phil has slow played Brooks out of his rhythm.

Koepka referenced Phil's gamesmanship in his interview.    I thought I spotted it.
