Wojo is clearly behind...Wright, Mack, Cooley, McD

Clearly ahead of...Mullen, Leitao

In the same group as Willard.

Jordan and Ewing are too early to tell.

I think Wojo has the potential to move up to #3.  Time will tell.

I'd say 7th. That's based solely on our average finish in the conference (10th in Year 1, 7th in Year 2, 4th in Year 3, 7th right now).

My expectation is that he'll eventually break into the Top 3 or 4. Displacing Wright or Mack is a tall order.

And McDermott too. He hasn't been as good in the Big East as he was in the MVC, but he's still got quite a few tourney appearances and a few conferences championships under his belt. Maybe he's past his peak, but I wouldn't count him out.

I put him at 6 out of 8.

1. Wright
2. Mack
3. Cooley
4. McDermott
5. Willard
6. Wojo
7. Leitao
8. Mullen

Too early to judge Ewing and Jordan.

A couple of good or bad seasons could completely rearrange 3-6.  Wright and Mack will be hard to surpass, and I don't see Leitao or Mullen moving up.

I rate this thread behind the one with the same theme started three hours earlier.

I'd say 6th so far.

1) Jay Wright: Duh
2) Ed Cooley: Just keeps them competitive. Slight edge for me over Mack.
3) Chris Mack: Feel like he should've done a bit more with what he's had, but always good.
4) Greg McDermott: Somehow just keeps them ticking. Not just Doug's dad.
5) Lavall Jordan: Beat Wojo twice. It's early, but returns are damn good.
6) Steve Wojiechowski: Good recruiter, still learning as a game coach. NCAA bid goes a long way.
7) Kevin Willard: His 2014 class saved his job the past 3 years. I think he's still floating above water thanks to Whitehead committing and the guys around him staying. Don't think he's around in 3 years.
8) Dave Leitao: Experience is why he edges the other two at the bottom. Not convinced he can return DPU to glory or even respectability.
9) Patrick Ewing: Beat Mullen twice and has what most thought was a garbage roster competitive.
10) Chris Mullen: They're 0-11 and it's quickly becoming his team. They should've been a NIT team this year, and at least competitive. One win over Duke does not a coach make.

The problem with this line of thinking is what happens when a good coach has a down year. Is Jordan better than Cooley right now despite zero career NCAA appearances and zero career league titles? If Xavier tumbles down the standings next year when Blueitt, Macura, O'Mara, and Kanter leave is he the 7th best coach in the conference?

Not ranking them years in the future, but right now.  It’s about right to me as it currently stands.

You are correct though, next year some coaches will have challenges, like Mack, Willard with his starters gone, Jordan losing Wideman/Martin with currently having only a two star SF recruit.  Let’s see how those coaches adjust and revisit next year.

didn't Jay Bilas mention at last years Centennial dinner that Wojo's rank amongst the BigEast coaches is the same spot he ranked among the Seven Dwarfs?

That wouldn't be so far off this season.  The only one I'd move more than a spot is Cooley - I'd put him ahead of both Jordan and Willard overall.

I think the more appropriate way to ask the question is, where to rank the Big East coaches relative to pre-season expectations. If that's the question I 'd rank Wojo low (Mullin is last imo), and LaVall Jordan higher. I'd even put Ewing ahead of Wojo.

Here's the preseason coach's poll: http://www.bigeast.com/news/2017/10/18/mens-basketball-villanova-sits-atop-coaches-preseason-poll-again.aspx

Unfair question-a better comparison would be to other coaches, say in the 1-6 year tenure.  From a won/loss standpoint, very average.  Defense-D+.  Wouldn’t diener be a decent defensive guy?  One would think defense is in wojos wheel house.  From a recruiting and potential standpoint, I’d have to give him high marks.

In the big east right now, I’d have to put him in the middle as well.  Yes, lavelle  has beat him twice, but I’d still take wojo at this point in time.  Let’s see how well lavelle recruits.  I’m sure he will do fine.

This is one of the few times I’d love to go back and play games in the old Milwaukee arena(our hinkle field house). Man that place rocked opposing players to their bones.  Hopefully the new arena has closed end zones and seats right up to the floor-let the toilet paper rain upon them, eyn’a?

No, that vote was mine.

It's obvious that Wojo is No. 1.

I'm just hoping we get 3 or 4 more polls and maybe another half-dozen threads asking similar questions.

Jordan has Jordan Tucker coming in from Duke as a mid year transfer.

Seton Hall has Taurean Thompson coming in as a conventional transfer next year.

Mack should’ve done more with what he’s had? He very well may be on his way to his 5th Sweet 16 in 8 years at Xavier.

Cooley has 1 NCAA Tournament win in his 12 year coaching career (7 at Providence). Mack has 10 in his 8 year coaching career (all at Xavier).
