I like his game, very similar to Travis. Great toughness, even as a frosh. He will be a handful for 4 years.
-
My dislike of Mac McClung = My dislike of JP Marcura
-
McClung has a LONG way to go to be Travis Diener. McClung is a chucker who was hot tonight. Promising offensive player. I don’t think he’ll ever be CLOSE to Diener. Diener is one of the most underrated Warriors of my lifetime.

Agreed. So far, I don't see much similarity to their games. Travis was an in-control guy who organized the offense and knocked down big 3s. McClung is a shoot-first, very athletic guard.
McClung is fun to watch, though, and I think he will be a consistent impact player when he slows down just a little bit.
-
I actually don’t mind the kid and he doesn’t seem like that much of a hotdog. Especially considering he’s kind of a freak and was an Instagram sensation with his dunking ability.

Diener is also not a guy with "a very punchable face" per my wife's assessment of McClung.

McClung = Riff Raff

That haircut, though.

Mac McClung's like-ability falls somewhere between Brad 'nutpuncher' Davison and Travis 'baby-faced assassin' Diener. But, then again, almost every human on the planet falls into that category.
So far, I don't have a strong desire to punch him in the face, but he's just a frosh. There's still time.
-
Eh,seems like a neat kid to me, I like him well enough.
-
Mac Maclung was better when he hung out with Pippen and Sam and Frodo.

Akinjo's shot wasn't very good tonite, but they will be a nice backcourt for the next few years.

Agreed
-
He’s way more similar to Dominic James. Look at some videos of his dunks, don’t think Travis could do any of that. McClung like Dominic James is a decent but not great shooter who could jump out of the gym and Diener was a way better shooter than either. I actually like McClung and knew who he was before he got to GTown, he had a ton of hype coming out of high school and his dunks are insane
-
Not familiar with McClung except for the shot he hit vs Providence and his nice game against us. I don't watch a ton of Gtown hoops and I don't know his backstory. Does he have a history of dirty play? Is he a smack-talker (like Theo)? Why is he "unlikable," except for being on a conference rival who will go against us for a few years?
-
McClung reminds me a lot of myself when I was that age. Only difference is I was better looking and more athletic😝😝😝
I think he will be a fun player for GU, but let’s see how he does when MU drops a Kobe McKewen/Dexter/Samir bomb on him over the next few years.
Nice win tonight!!

I had the exact same thought!
-
McClung had a nice game tonight, better than any I had seen him play the few other times I watched Georgetown. Honestly, I don't see many similarities between him and Diener other than the obvious one.

Yep, both are short.

Yup.
It’s just a lazy comparison by the OP.
-
Why? Mcclung played scrappy, tough, dangerous from 3, not afraid to get in the lane, seemed to be playing w a chip. Much like Travis Diener. Obviously he has along way to go and I’ve only seen GT a couple time this year, but I see a similar type player. He’s not Marcura who was a good player but a cont, and he’s nowhere near Davison who is not a good player but still a cont. And I’m not sure why Dom James is a more apt comparison, Dom was athletic but not great from 3.
-
That haircut, though.
Well, to be fair, Travis had that haircut, too - in 2003 .

McClung came in shooting 25% from 3...

The biggest problem with McClung is that every time he does something that doesn't suck, Murf is on the Dodds board saying I told you so. He is a huge fan.
-
To me, I think the OP was referring to how he was a guy his opponents will love to hate, like Travis was. I actually didn't think McClung carried himself in that cocky manner like Travis and to a greater extent Rowsey did. But if he plays like that for the next four years, he will be a thorn in our side for sure.
-
McClung hype makes him one of my most hated players. He's very inconsistent yet people who look at raw stats, a few highlights, and see one game think he is great.
Great game last night but he's not even in the same league as Diener. Last night was McClung's Jean Felix game. Try not to overreact.
-

My mole at GU says he's anything but a hotdog. Apparently, a quiet and shy kid.

I am sure he is, but even if the nicest kid on the planet starts relentlessly raining threes on your team, his face starts to look punchable.
-
So Markus's face looks punchable to opposing fanbases.

That site is still up?

Nor was his decision making. Georgetown board absolutely roasting him (and giving lots of props to the MU w/o Howard). Agreed that McClung and Akinjo will be a force.

He doesn't have a history of being dirty or anything like that that I know of. He's been a YouTube sensation for years because of his dunking ability, which is pretty amazing and worth a look if you haven't seen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PePUaQ6789k). He's a better all-around player than I expected, and a good get by Georgetown. I believe he is from VA.
-
My 13 year old son always calls him Matthew McClung which I think is hilarious.

That's his real name.

You better believe it.

That's his real name.
I realize that, but just doesn't fit, does it?

This cracks me up...my girlfriend came into the room where I was watching the game and within one minute said "I wanna punch that little douchebag in the face."
He's not yet to the Tripucka/Macura/Devendorf/Kaminsky/Gasser/Davison level of hated opponents, but by the time he's a Senior, I'm pretty sure he will be.

It really kinda is a "scrappy white guy" thing, isn't it? Not sure why, but fans love to hate these guys.
tower mentioned that maybe Markus' face is punchable to other fan bases, but I doubt it. Maybe so if Markus were white.
It's a weird social phenomenon. There probably are racists who hate black people but would rather punch one of these scrappy white players in the face.

It's apparent that those scrappy white players don't know their place.

Why does your girlfriend want to punch white basketball players?
I'm not sure the Dominic comparison is a perfect one either. Dom was a point guard from the beginning. McClung is more like a Wes / Dom hybrid IMO.
-
It's just a weird phenomenon that's unique to basketball and its fans.
We probably could have a whole discussion about it in the Superbar ... although it would probably get locked in the first few hours!
-
Why does your girlfriend want to punch white basketball players?
Not all of them, just McClung. And Davison.
-
McClung shot himself in the leg in 8 Mile.
-
McClung is a solid young player and can't help what he looks like. Has some very good athletic skills at driving the ball .The outside shooting is in need of improvement so there is upside in his game . I would not put him in the untalented but scrappy white guy category. So far he hasn't exhibited any jerk like tendency. Ewing is not the kind of coach that is going to have a punk on his team. I think He and Akinjo make a nice back court combo for Georgetown. Looking forward to some great games with Georgetown over the coming years.
