Title: Quoting Films in Every Day Conversation
Post by: StillAWarrior on September 12, 2016, 06:27:18 PM
A recent post in another thread got me to thinking about popular movie quotes in every day conversation.

The one posted was, "Boy, that escalated quickly."  My immediate thought was that I can't remember a movie quote that became quite so commonly quoted.  Then, of course, others rushed to mind.  A few of my favorites:

"So, I've got that going for me...which is nice."
"These go to 11."
"Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?"

Yes, I know I'm showing my age.

What are some of your favorites?

Caddyshack, Animal House, Ghostbusters (original), Princess Bride, Shawshank Redemption.     Of more recent vintage, after a summer of binge listening to Hamilton , I find myself applying and tweaking lyrics from that on a nearly daily basis.    "(blank) doesn't discriminate, between the sinners and the saints, it just takes and it takes..."    "southern mother-f***** democratic republicans"

When something is fairly surprising, I use "Hey Now",  from Howard Stern a fair amount, and jokingly in the office when someone apologizes for something inconsequential,  I rebut by saying,  YOU CAN PUT YOUR SORRYS IN A SACK! (from Seinfeld)

I'm old,  and nearly no one in my office gets either reference,  but at my age,  I'm there to entertain myself.

I associate "Hey Now" with the Hank Kingsley.

I am one of the fortunate people insomuch that at least one movie line can be overheard from either myself or my coworkers in the office every day.  More importantly, we keep things fresh, not relying too heavily on repeated usage of a single line or even a single movie.

And at home, there's no shortage of the long pronounciation of "nope" (reference to chick's avatar). Even the kids are in on it, and we don't even let them watch the show.

At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Others from movies and TV (even commercials) that I hear and/or say frequently:

"Doh!"
"Time to make the donuts"
"Bullsh*t" [coughing]
"We're on a mission from God."
"I said 'Good Day!'"
"The price is wrong, bitch."
"I'll have what she's having."
"Hello, Newman."
"I'm not dead yet."

"A - Always
B - Be
C - Closing"

With an 8 and 10 yr old in the house this gets said at least every other day to the point they've started saying it.  I just need to keep it up for another 7-8 years until we can watch the scene together so they can get the decade long Dad joke.

I have plenty of used movie lines, and they are all situational.  I can't think of any right now.

I do use a lot of lines from The Jerky Boys.

Here are my two favorites that - as a parent of three - are applicable to most every situation I encounter these days.

TV Show: "Children are the future... today belongs to me."

Movie: "Don't make the same mistakes I did. Got it? [turning to my wife or another adult*] Or else the whole world tastes like Mama June after hot yoga."

*If children are present.

I probably use some of these too much:

Don't call me Shirley!

It's in the hole!

Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore.

You talking to me?

What we've got here is failure to communicate.

I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore!

Houston, we have a problem.

You can't handle the truth!

I'll be back.
and of course: Hasta la vista, baby.

Lots of Adam Sandler movies (Big Daddy, Happy Gilmore, Billy Madison), Jim Carrey (Ace Ventura, Dumb and Dumber), National Lampoon Vacation movies, Caddyshack, Home Alone. I'm sure there are more.

Also, The Office, Seinfeld, Friends from TV

I regularly use quotes from Godfather, Caddyshack, etc
These top 100 lists have many of them:

PAPA (Fredo voice)
Cram it up your cram hole.
His head fell off!
Why don't you eat up and we'll tell ya.
So I got that going for me...which is nice.
It's in the hole.
I don't think the heavy stuff's going to come down for quite a while.
You'll get nothing and like it.

And basically the entirety of Step Brothers...
There's so much room for activities.
I didn't want salmon! I said it four times!
This wedding is horsecrap.
I'm not going to call him Dad. Even if there's a fire.
Luscious V of hair from my chest pubes down to my ball fro.
Stay gold, pony boy.
Investors? Possibly you!
Did we just become best friends?
Your voice is like a combination of Fergie and Jesus.
It was Johnny Hopkins and Sloane Kettering, and they were blazing that crap up every day.
Dane Cook, Pay Per View, 20 minutes, let's go!
This is a house of learned doctors.

If a day goes by without a Caddyshack quote, something has gone terribly wrong.

others:
"If someone asks you if you are a god, you say YES"

"This s#$ts chess, it ain't checkers"

"Is it behind the rabbit?"

"Hey, I'll tell you what. You can get a good look at a butcher's a$$ by sticking your head up there. But, wouldn't you rather to take his word for it?"

"Would you put on some pants, it feels weird having to ask a second time"

"Stop preparing, you're always preparing, just go"

"then they're on double secret probation!"

"What was all that one in a million talk?"

Many many others as well.

Timing and context being important..... I learned that when you tell your boss that they have managed to make your fire department into a combination of a Dilbert cartoon and the movie Office Space, comparing what they are currently worrying about to an obsession with cover sheets for TPS reports..... yeah, sometimes that can piss them off.     Who knew?

Context .....that reminds me of a conference call.

I was hired to advise some Nevada folks on buying some gaming assets out of a casino bankruptcy.

During the call one of the Nevada guys says ...."what about the related licenses...what should we bid for those?..."

I couldnt resist...

I said..."Now the price of the license is less than 20,000 dollars, am I right? ..."

The guys actually says..."thats right"

I reply...."Now why would we ever consider paying more than that? ..."
The guy is a little confused ....so (as I am committed) I go all the way...and say..." well ....you can have my answer now if you like. Our offer to them is this -- nothing. Not even the fee for the gaming license, which I would appreciate if you all would put up personally..."

Finally another lawyer bursts in.."Godfather RIGHT!!'''....

It finally got a bit of a laugh from all those on the call, but I think they thought it less funny/appropriate than I.

Yup, context can be important. Oh well..I had a chuckle, anyway.

Kid: Woah, that's a cool motorcycle
little naginiF: No.  Don't....
Me:  That's not a motorcycle baby.  That's a chopper.

Couldn't have been happier.

This reminds me of my favorite movie quote story ever.

Glow and I took glow jr. and chick jr. up to the Northern Wisconsin for a vacation.  The were probably about six and eight.

One evening, we stopped at a classic Northwoods tavern for a beverage.  The kids always loved the fact that they are allowed to sit at the bar in Wisconsin. They climbed up on their stools as the bartender approached them.

glow jr.: (to bartender)  This is a BEAUTIFUL place you've got here, Bob!

chick jr.:  They have both kinds of music here: Country AND Western!

I've never been more proud.

Blame Canada!

You know what sucks about being a Baldwin?  Nothing!

Haven't you ever heard of the emancipation proclamation?  I don't listen to hip hop.

Get Bill Gates in here!... I thought you said Windows 98 would be better and faster...It is.  Up to 3 [gun shot]...

This reminded me....nothing makes my 10 month old laugh harder than when I do the "MAP" voice from that movie right before Gates shows up...and when I do the "We are the Knights who say NEEEEE"

Another line I use all the time from movies, but at this point I can't tell if I'm doing the actual doing the movie line or all the parodies of the movie line "It's a trap!"

I bet you tell your patients with that drill in your hand, "Go ahead, make my day."

I asked my wife and she reminded me that I say these things

"summoninbetchin' bastidges!" or "fargin' ice holes!"

"If I grew up on a farm, and was retarded, Bruges might impress me.  But I didn't, so it doesn't."  (You have to replace Bruges with whatever appropriate thing is happening)

"Noonan!"

I saw her on ESPN College Gameday last Saturday.

She's hit the prime time now. She doesn't bother with our piddly stuff now.

"I ate his kidney with some fava beans and a nice Chianti." (Any time my wife drinks Chianti, which allows lots of opportunities)

"I'm your huckleberry."

Rule 45: Never say your sorry. It's a sign of weakness.

From NCIS; again not a movie, a TV show.

Not that I agree with the rule; it can also be a strength.

Yep, it's much better to do what many guys on this board do after it's been proven that they are clearly in the wrong: double down.    ;)
