If You were an NBA GM and Your team desperately needs a big, with job riding on the outcome which one of these guys would you pick?
-
Just my opinion ....
Davis is an unknown and at least a couple years away from having any effect.
Brice has always been known as a guy who was not willing to put in the hard work necessary.
Bentil could be a solid rotation guy, but he's a tweener - don't know if he can defend at '3' or '4'.
So I voted for Ellenson. Don't think he will ever be a star in the league, but will be a solid rotation guy and could develop into a borderline all-star.

The Cracked Sidewalks interview with Draft Express would support the notion of Davis being a high pick.

I haven't seen enough from Davis to believe in his potential, while I don't see Johnson as a high upside guy.
I like Henry, but I love Bentil. He can do everything you want a stretch 4 to do. He can still improve his frame, has size and athleticism, can shoot from outside, and has great low post footwork. Plus, he's only been playing a handful of years, so he's still learning the game.
I think Henry is a high floor, lower ceiling type guy. Worst case is a starter that gives 12/8. I'd roll the dice on the guy I feel has higher upside.

Do You think Bentil will return for another year?

Do You think Bentil will return for another year?
Honestly no idea. From rankings, I think he's the most underrated player in this draft. Granted, my opinion means nothing, but I love his game and think it translates well to the next level.

I am very surprised he is rated so low. I think the Combine may change that. Especially if he measures out to his listed height.
-
Bentil could be a solid rotation guy, but he's a tweener - don't know if he can defend at '3' or '4'...
...whereas we know Henry can't defend an NBA 3 or 4. Who can Henry guard that Bentil can't? Bentil was the better player this past season, had better shooting percentages (FG% ,3FG% and FT%) is more athletic and seems to have a better motor. He is only one year older than Henry. Henry is much smoother with the ball, and I'm sure that means a lot. I get that Henry's larger frame ultimately makes him the better prospect, but I guess I don't understand why the large gulf between them as prospects. Guys who get paid a lot of money to figure this out say so, so it is likely true. I just don't get it.
-
Bentil has a number of limitations at this point. Start with his physical profile.
He's listed at 6'9". That's short of the ideal height NBA teams look for in a power forward — think Kevin Love, Anthony Davis and Blake Griffin (all 6'10") or even LaMarcus Aldridge and DeMarcus Cousins (both 6'11"). That extra length makes a difference on both ends of the court at the next level.
Ben has some intriguing tools to work with — a good inside game, combined with decent range. He turnover rate is impressively low given his high usage. But he doesn't have the athleticism to match up against NBA small forwards — a position loaded with great athletes like Lebron, Durant, Kawhi Leonard, Jimmy Butler and Giannis. Bentil also isn't a great jump-shooter or rebounder yet.
I could see Bentil eventually finding a place in the NBA. But he's got a lot of work to do first.

Brice Johnson
He's a bit of a headcase but he has the highest ceiling of those guys. Job on the line, I'd go for broke.

No comparison at all if you use the freshman year. Bentil was 6 points and 5 rebounds a game.

Much deeper explanation of me earlier comment - "he's a tweener".
If he is 6'9" he will go pretty high. I suspect he is closer to 6'7", though.
-
Bentil won't be a very good pro. He's a smaller version of Frank Kaminsky.
Johnson is John Henson 2.0. Not horrendous, but not what you hope for in a 1st rounder.
Davis's absolute dream would be Larry Sanders with his head on straight, but he's not going to get there.
Give me Hank, who will absolutely be able to score at the next level.
-
Interesting fact, Brice Johnson never attempted a 3 pointer his entire career.

I think Bentil is a better athlete than many are crediting him for. I also think it's worth noting he's only been playing organized basketball for about six years.
-
I think Henry and Bentil are likely to go to a team that has multiple first round picks. The theory is they would pick someone that was more well rounded on the first pick and use the second or third first round pick on some one with some questions but good upside .
So Denver, Toronto , Boston, Phoenix, Philadelphia are possible landing points.

Some comments on Day 1 at the combine. Bentil had a good day.
http://www.draftexpress.com/article/NBA-Combine-Competitive-Action-Recap-Day-One-5479
Henrys measurements were very good.
-
from SI.com's story on eye-openers from day 1 of the combine...
Henry Ellenson
The Marquette big man measured in at 6' 11.5" in shoes with a 7' 2.25" wingspan. Why is this significant? Because Henry Ellenson is big enough to play center. We’ve known he’s skilled offensively with a very good feel. Scouts continue to question his lateral quickness. So, if you believe he can legitimately line up with centers on defense while functioning as a stretch-big on the other end, Ellenson becomes a much safer investment. I’d be surprised if he slips very far in this draft.

Could very well go just as high as D Wade went.
Then again, there are many Scoopers who expect him to be planted in the D League for much of the next 1-3 years so what do I know?

Remember, if your opinion comes from ignorance, it's validity in a circumstance like this is none.
Deyonta was ridiculous in his final travel bball season before his senior year of high school. Many who were in the gym, including myself, projected him to be where he is today. He's not new or 'unknown'.

I meant unknown in the sense that he played less than 20 minutes a game in his college career.
I'm guessing you knew that, but you needed to be the condescending jerk you try hard to be.
The NBA needs just a mite more evidence than watching a 16 year old kid.

So if he played 28 minutes a game, he'd go from unknown to known?
The NBA "just a mite" (sic) have seen him since age 16, since he's 19 and a half years old.
Your use of 'unknown' was poor and wrong.
Further, the idea that logging 650 minutes at Michigan State renders him 'unknown' due to lack of playing time is ridiculous.
-
Toward the end of the Big Ten Season I saw a play sequence where Davis block three consecutive shots in a row. A real rim protector.

Cmon...it certainly is implied when you are talking about the NBA draft.

Got it. So when the topic was "If You Were An NBA GM Who Would You Pick", you commented that he's an unknown... but you thought he was known to the NBA.
Lol. Get real. What an idiot.

Sorry chico.
I said he was an unknown because I don't think he will be much of a factor for at least a couple years. He only played 18 minutes a game at MSU. Of course in the NBA, he won't have to try to beat out stars like Matt Costello for playing time. He was on a size-challenged MSU team and still didn't see big minutes.
He has nowhere near the court awareness of Ellenson. Much more physically gifted and may be better long term, but HE is the better player now.
-
The more I hear about his performances, the more I like Bentil, and I was high on him before all the draft coverage. I really think he should be a top-5 player in this draft. He probably won't be, but someone will end up with a steal. The kid has been playing competitive basketball for what, 6 years? He's just scratching the surface of his talent.

Can Bentil put the ball on the floor? I seem to recall he is more of a spot up shooter so I am wondering how his game will translate to the NBA. Looks like he could be a decent rebounder and defender for his size.
If he can drive with the ball, maybe a slightly lesser version of Paul Millsap?

Yeah Dunn created a lot of open opportunities for him. Not a great (but not horrible) rebounder, not overly big, not too athletic, and for the NBA an average shooter and below average ball handler and defender.
-
Where does Stone fit in all of this?
-
Where does Stone fit in all of this?
15 -20 range, if I had to make a prediction. I actually think he will make a decent pro down the line. Good shooter, good passer, good size, pathetic defender, struggles with the offensive flow of the game; lots to learn yet, but also possesses lots of skills.

I didn't watch a ton of UNC, but from what I saw in the tournament, somebody is getting a steal with Brice Johnson if he goes near draftexpress's prediction of 30th. Is it just because he's 22 instead of 19? What's the knock on him?

He can't score the ball from outside of about 10 feet and is about as skinny as I am. I love Brice and love watching him, he's a freak athlete, but he's nothing more than John Henson 2.0.

Measurements are now being reviewed by the NBA
http://www.draftexpress.com/article/NBA-League-Office-Draft-Combine-Measurements-Under-Review-5499
This may impact certain players as it relates to measurement of vertical leap.
-
Jakob Poeltl measured a 8'9 ½ standing reach, which is very small for someone standing over 7-feet tall barefoot, with a 7'3 wingspan.
At 6'2" my standing reach is 8'. So despite Poetl having a 7'3" wingspan, his arms are shorter than mine? Yup, something is amiss with the measurements.
Melo Trimble measured a 7'8 ½ standing reach, which is very small for someone standing over 6'1 barefoot. Maybe daddy was an alligator.

Why would he transfer if he was on the boarder as to whether to turn pro or not? Improve enough in the offseason and have a nice sophomore season and you can play in the NBA in a year. You're just guaranteeing putting the NBA on hold for another year this way.

Below we take a look at the player or players most commonly picked by the experts at each spot.
The experts: Chad Ford (ESPN), Andrew Sharp (SI.com), Scott Howard-Cooper (NBA.com), Aaron Torres (FoxSports.com), Jonathan Givony (The Vertical), Derek Bodner (USA Today), Sam Vecenie and Gary Parrish (CBS Sports), Ed Isaacson (Yahoo Sports), HoopsHype, Kevin O'Connor (SB Nation), and Jason McIntyre (The Big Lead)
No. 9 Toronto Raptors — Henry Ellenson, F/C or Marquese Chriss, F
Experts: 3 out of 12 each
School: Marquette (Ellenson), Washington (Chriss)
Other possibilities: Deyonta Davis, Jaylen Brown, Timothe Luwawu, Jakob Poeltl
Key quote from McIntyre (on Ellenson): "The Raptors are only shooting 28% on 3-pointers in the postseason. But the move here is to replace likely-departing Bismack Biyombo, who will get paid by someone after a nice postseason."
-
I can't think of two big men with more opposite games than Ellenson and Biyombo. You could easily have both on the floor at the same time.

I agree there is not much comparable . However, It may be that the author was focusing on Henry's inside offensive game. It appears as if many of the pundits seem Henry made be playing the 5 position at times.
-
"Playing the 5" is an anachronism. Biyombo and Ellenson could be on the floor at the same time. Check out OKC tonight with Adams and Ibaka playing together.

It's....very.....simple.
All things being equal, who would you take? Who do you think is best on the board if all these guys are there. Seeing as you're the only person who can't figure it out, pretty sure the understanding problem is on your end, not the thread creator.

Henry keeps falling. Out of the lottery now in two mock drafts. Will be interesting to see what happens, all it takes is one GM to overvalue someone.

I think he will be drafted by a team with two first round picks. They would use their second first round pick to select Henry . The theory being they would use the first on someone more NBA ready and Henry would be in a position to develop over time with less pressure.

Definitely a possibility.

Or all it takes is a couple of GMs with a need at his position to undervalue him and have him fall. Works both ways. How many passed on Aaron Rogers?

Interesting that Bentil is the 2nd choice in the poll.
I'm guessing that means more people saw him than Davis or Johnson.
-
I think Henry will fall to later in the first. I'd take Brice Johnson from that pool.
-

Yup. Bentil was a great college player. He won't be able to shoot from 3 in the NBA and he won't be able to beat guys off the dribble in the NBA and he won't be able to overpower guys in the NBA.
I think Henry will fall to later in the first. I'd take Brice Johnson from that pool.
Hank wasn't working out with the team that has the #2 overall pick because they think they can get him in the 2nd round. He's a top 10 pick. If he's around when the Bucks pick he's going there. Bucks front office was talking about how he shot the ball better than anybody who has worked out with them in the last 7 years or so.
Johnson is John Henson 2.0. Long, athletic beanpole who will get beat up by bigger posts and can't score outside of 5 feet from the basket.
-
Johnson is 10x the athlete that Henson is. If Johnson can improve his 15 footer a little more he can be a double digit scorer. He's got the most upside which is what I'd be looking for.

Agree to disagree. They're nearly identical players coming out of UNC, except Henson was younger.

Henson = shot blocker; not going to ever give you much on offense.
Brice = can give you offense.
I think these two are quite different in their offensive abilities... with Brice being far, far better.

We'll see. Brice was my favorite player to watch this year but I just don't see him being a highly productive pro. I see him as a high energy rebounder who gets beat up by bigger and stronger bigs.
PS I'm guess it's Baldwin to the Bucks if Hank isn't around. I wish it was Luwawu to the Bucks if Hank wasn't around, but wouldn't hate Baldwin. Better than Poeltl. M

I disagree as well. I think he probably has the least upside. But he is a good, young, active player who could become a part of a team's rotation
-
I think Marquese Chriss is this year's Paul George.
There was a lot of talk back in 2010 that George was the sleeper pick in the draft and he had a real chance to be a superstar - yet he lasted to #10 behind studs like Even Turner, Wesley Johnson, Epke Udoh, etc.
It will be interesting to see where he goes.

So trading one of their good pieces and hanging onto their terrible pieces in order to pick up a question mark. Sounds like the Bucks.

If i was an NBA GM i wouldn't even pick up the phone when Ainge called or make eye contact with him at the draft. whatever happens might not screw you but it'll definitely help him.
(ditto for Spielman if i was an NFL GM)

That might be the most in depth scouting report on a prospect and how he fits with the team's needs, that I have read in quite sometime.
Henry won't last past the 10th pick.
I've been thinking about the possibility of Henry being drafted by the Bucks. Clearly a lot of pros with that move (close to home, ambassador for MU bball, etc), but are there cons?
-
Sounds like Giannis. And probably hundreds of other professional athletes.
The fact that a NBA guy knows Wally's name, means NBA teams are talking about Wally in regards to Henry. Probably not a positive.

I'm not sure I get it. So Wally will hang around his brother? Is that a bad thing?
-
I'm not sure I get it. So Wally will hang around his brother? Is that a bad thing?
I could be looking at it more negatively than most. I just thought it was odd that Henry was mentioned in a discussion about the Bulls draft and the only tidbit to be added was bringing up his virtually unknown brother.
-
I'm not sure I get it. So Wally will hang around his brother? Is that a bad thing?
Better than hanging around with those thugs at Roc Nation
-
I guess I don't understand the context in which Goff mentioned it. On the face of it, I don't see much harm in a 19 year old millionaire having his brother hang around with him. I don't think Wally is a bad influence by any means.
And I don't get the Taylor Griffin reference. He played in Italy last year.
-

Yeah, I'm with you on it. Odd.

The fact that a NBA guy knows Wally's name, means NBA teams are talking about Wally in regards to Henry. Probably not a positive.
I could see it if Wally had a criminal background or is someone who they feel has held Henry back from reaching his potential or from working hard on his game, but Hank credits his family with his gym rat mentality and with forcing him to build his ball handling and shooting skills from a young age. And Walter is a college educated kid who, as far as I know, does not have a criminal history.
If an NBA team passes up on a player because he's hanging out with a guy like Walter Ellenson, I'm thinking the pool of players they're limiting themselves to is very, very thin.
-

Jason Goff ... NBA expert?
Uh, since when? The guy has been a radio producer/host in Chicago for the entirety of his career. He's as much an NBA expert as you or I.
-
People often don't realize but teams do consider players family situations when prepping for the draft. It's not a major factor but it is a consideration. A person I trust told me that Bobby portis fell a few spots last year due to his family situation.
A lot of potential NBA players have brothers who will be hanging out with them. The fact that this guy felt the need to mention Wally, is probably closer to a bad thing than a good thing. However, it probably won't affect Henry's status at all.

Those years he had his own NBA radio show...and all the guest appearances he does in other cities...guy is NBA connected.

Ah, my bad.
I don't know. Family certainly isn't a main factor but it can have an impact on how a players pans out for a franchise. Different level but look how Jeronne Maymon's family completely derailed him. Can happen at the pro level as well. Don't know anything about this situation and from what I do know about the Ellensons, it shouldn't apply. They seem enthusiastic but hardly anything I would call a red flag.

I guess that's my point. I know it happens at all levels. But it's Walter Ellenson.

Just heard Wally Szczerbiak on sports talk while driving home from the grocery store. He was discussing the NBA draft with the hosts (Gio & Jones on CBS). They asked him for a sleeper pick. He likes HE with his "Dirk-like" game and improving outside shot. Wally stated that HE had "slipped from 10 to 13"... FWIW

The two guys who dropped big time - Deonte and Skal - were also the two guys who played the least in college.
In other words - it was unknown what they will become. They were not able to beat out much less "talented" players for minutes in college, so how will they be able to compete once they have to go against pros every day.

Bentil was a fun college player, but ultimately his pro upside is something like a poor man's Marreese Speights. Not surprised by this.

Young is still on the roster. They only released Hunter. I don't think you fire your scouts because they didn't nail a late 1st Round pick. Check out the 2015 Draft, it's not like there were a lot of strong options still on the board at 28.
