Title: A hallmark of Buzz Williams
Post by: gumbyandpokey on March 11, 2010, 02:26:15 PM
MU playing a rotten last few minutes of a half.  Happens nearly every single game.

Time for your nap, Grampa.

Probably time for you to leave this board. Is it his fault Lazar doesn't understand how important it is for us that he's on the floor to close a half. When's the last time he's closed a half?

I wouldn't say rotten, but we do have a nasty habit of giving up leads at the end of halves for some reason.  Hard to argue that we don't.  Is that because the other teams are finding ways to exploit us?  Is it do to lineups (i.e. having guys out of the lineup with 2 fouls at the end of a half), is it because we're playing more conservative?  Is it due to fatigue?

Who knows, but it does seem to happen against the better competition where we leak away points at the end.

Do you actually believe in all of this criticism or do you just try to get a rise out of people?

People know we're playing Villanova, right? The #10 ranked team. They're not going to roll over. Let's have some perspective here.

I know, I have totaly perspective. Just another stupid thread dissing our coach. I'm just frustrated with Lazar.

I think we all realize that....the frustrating thing is that it happens against teams not ranked in the top 10 as well.  As stated above, why is it happening, who knows.  Could be a number of factors.

From listening on the radio it seems we got good looks at the end of the half we just weren't converting.

Agreed.

Stupid to write "nova won't roll over". No one expects that. But it's all too common to have a 4-7 minute stretch where we flat out are not impressive. We've hit the side board and/or missed the rim on 5 shots today. No excuse for that.

We let teams hang around because of this habit and we've seen it bite hard in the recent past.

This team has a lot of talent, but consistently has a 5-7 minute stretch where we don't score.  When we can't make a basket, that is on the players not Buzz.  Where we win is we play consistent defense, don't give away turnovers, and are very efficient the other 30 minutes of the game.

No, it's not stupid to write that. Some people don't get that Villanova is better than us.

People never seem to mention how we get the big leads/come back from deficits: we are a jump shooting team.  Sometimes the shots ALWAYS fall (we go on a big run), sometimes nothing falls (they start to catch up/pull ahead), a lot of the times its tough drag it out basketball.

These streaks are to be expected and I'm perfectly ok with it as long as the shot selection is good.

'Nova wasn't better than us today!

Not the 2nd half. Gumby doesn't post when positive things happen, but even he will find something negative. Like he didn't like Buzz' suit today.

We always play worse when we have a lead.  Would it really surprise anyone if we got up big against Georgetown tomorrow then blew the lead? Absolutley not, we have blown tons of leads this year.  But we have also won our fair share of close games.  It was good to see us close this one out even though we did not play particularly well down the stretch.

When does Gumby get the banhammer?

67 ignores, 165 posts...

That is a pretty terrible ratio.  But I'm sure he can find a worse one for something related to MU.

Add to this the fact that we get very few offensive rebounds (so small) and you have the reasons for our inevitable "droughts". Fortunately we play through them.

I think a hallmark of Buzz Williams is our team always playing hard and never giving up even when we are down in a game. I only was able to watch the first 5 mins and the last 10 mins, but was getting updated on my phone and it just had that feeling that at some point the wheels have to fall off, but our team kept fighting and ended up with the W. Great Win for Buzz and the team.

We got plenty of good looks at end of first half..they just weren't falling..lots of open 3's.  No surprise Gumby came with something negative..it's his M.O.  I won't ignore him, as I like to read how miserable he see things in his life.  I take comfort in knowing that even if my life deals me a tough day..there's always someone else who has a worse day.  Everyday waking up as Gumby just, must, suck.

There isn't a college basketball coach in America who gets more out of his/her team than Buzz. Couldn't be happier with him.

+1  A true sign of a leader.  He and the team work work their tails off.

To paraphrase your earlier response "That's stupid to write that".  We lost to them by a total of 4 points in two games and now we beat them...

Yeah...those were close, but they were still losses. There's no category for close losses in the W and L columns. We finally got them for the first time in 5 games.
