I didn't think JJJ had many WTF moments at all. Missed a coupla FTs and a coupla 3s, but he knew he had to be aggressive because nobody could hit a shot. I rather liked his energy.

Derrick is obviously the studliest one tonight, though.

Derrick's play was under control the entire game, but his biggest contribution was his leadership.  Also, great to see Steve Taylor's outburst after the defensive errors on the failed switch that caused his man to score easily.  Juan is consist in his effort on offense and defense.  Leadership is evolving on this team and the year will be fun to watch.

Commented at game that Derrick was playing the best on the inside of any Warriors.
Loved Juan fighting alone for a rebound among 4 ND players for a rebound that ultimately went OB to MU.

Yes, he must have said at least 10 times about too many point guards these days are all about scoring, but Derrick Wilson "is a true point guard".  It seemed like any time Derrick touched the ball Dickey was losing his mind about it.

Let me add one more thing.  6 assists, 0 turnovers.  Outstanding game Derrick.

Truth be told, when Derrick is our SOTG lots of other guys are having an off night.  So it'll always be less than a 'pretty' win.  But I'm not sure I recall him playing a better game during his time at MU and I believe we ran the risk of losing without his performance last night.  Kudos Derrick.

Yes, undeniably, Dickey has a serious man-crush on Derrick. He basically said -- on more than one occasion -- that Derrick was a PG he would choose to build a team around.

Of course, in talking about Luke the previous game, Dickey also said he couldn't remember when Marquette had a player capable of scoring in the low post.

In other words, Dickey either hasn't seen enough Marquette hoops the last couple of years or he's got the worst memory since Reagan couldn't recall who Ollie North was.

Related note that many have brought up in the past, but I hope we can put the annoying "best playing 10-15 minutes" line to bed.  It's fruitless and backhanded, and could be said about anyone if we had a roster full and talented enough.  36 last night, and should not have been any less.

Anyone else notice that while Junior took more 3's, Derrick is actually shooting a higher percentage from beyond the arc as a senior?

Yes, but I think the sample size is too small.  In other words, I don't think that would hold true if he was taking the same amount of shots.

Either way, any shot that falls from Derrick from the outside is a bonus.

If Derrick can give you an efficient 5, 5 & 5, that's a pretty useful PG. Sometimes he can go off like last night, but for the most part, he's going to be around 5,5&5.

He's got to get that shooting % up, but I think he's capable.

I agree with mattyv about the small sample size.  But considering Derrick entered the year 2-24 for his career, 3-13 is lights out shooting!  Heck, Dominic James was a relative marksman at 29.1% on 3FG for his career.  The bigger difference is James made over 150 career three's vs the 5 Derrick has to date.

Either way, any shot that falls from Derrick from the outside is a bonus.

I actually wonder about that. His confidence clearly isn't there beyond the arc, but he's had a decent amount this year that were in and out. While any shooter can probably say the same, I wonder if Derrick might be able to hit closer to 30% if he had the willingness to shoot more often.

Regardless, they are all bonus, but Junior shot a near identical percentage his junior year as Derrick is shooting now and took fewer threes per game than Derrick is taking this year. Honestly, I've never really believed Junior was a much better shooter than Derrick, just more willing to shoot.

His shot selection should be don't shoot ever...when talking 3s.

Ridiculous statement.  Last night Derrick refused a good shot with about 8-10 left on the 35 clock that would have been taken in rhythm.  Instead he hesitated, made a tough entry pass to Luke and got it back forcing a tough shot as the clock ran down.  Derrick needs to be selective, of course.  But just like Steve and Juan need to rise up when the situation dictates, the same must be true for Derrick.  I'm not saying that we're designing offense so Derrick can shoot (unlike Carlino, JjJ or Duane), but he has to shoot when it makes sense.

Elite game changer, aina?

Not even close. He had a good game last night against North Dakota, who aren't exactly world beaters. i give him credit for a well played game last night, but let's not get carried away.

Thing is, it doesn't make sense that is the point. He should be driving and using his strength as he did yesterday. That is where he is good. If he has room on the perimeter use it to make a move to the hole or find the open guy. Just because he forced a tough pass doesn't mean he should shoot, it means find a better play.

The 3 he made was a fine shot since we already had the game won. In a close game it's just scary.

I wholeheartedly disagree.  Compared to your average person, Junior was actually a very good outside shooter (shot around 42% from 3 in High School).  For anyone that saw the Pro-Am game where he scored around 80 pts, you would see Junior was a respectable shooter under lax defenses.

In the college game though, he was not a great shooter, nor was he allowed to shoot in Buzz's offense.  The vast majority of Junior's shots were buzzer beater shots when the shot-clock or game clock ran down.  Everyone will have low percentages then.

Similarly, Derrick's 3's last year were the same kind.  This year, Derrick has taken a few selective open 3's (I'd say about a third of his 13) and I think it has upped his percentage a bit.  He is a much improved shooter compared to last year, but still not a respectable shooter.

Interesting but, if I recall correctly, I think it was the first game where Derrick's lay-ups were not bounced off the backboard. It is amazing what a little self-confidence can do. It has been great to see Juan develop and now Derrick is showing signs as well.  I can only believe that Wojo's positive approach concerning Juan and Derrick is paying big time for the team and for them as individuals. It is great to see what Wojo has done in a few short months, impressive. Keep it coming.
