so now that the home and home with ASU and OSU is done does that leave us the ability to finally schedule some old Big East schools like ND, Cincy or Louisville? I hope so since those were some good rivalries that should be renewed.
-
That would be nice. Really hope we find a couple more regardless of opponent at least. Love having a couple marquee games not in tournament/Wisky.
Would be fun to get one going with Minny. Two young coaches. Another Big10 team and it's a close to get a little rivalry going.
-
Northwestern I can see as a semi buy game home and home. I would love a home and home with Iowa St personally or another Big 12 team like Baylor.
-
I wonder if We'll get IU in the Gavitt Tip Off.
-
I know Ohio State was done because of the aircraft carrier fiasco. Not sure how ASU came to be, maybe a Fox driven thing since Big East and Pac 12 are both Fox deals.
Would love to know if anyone has any insights into our non con scheduling strategy.
-
Is like to see Pitt and Louisville personally.

MU-ND at the United Center. Get on it, MU admin.

No Dick won't do it because of their overall arrogance. Louisville would be a good rival.
-
Don't expect Northwestern or the other Duke coaching tree programs. Wojo has said they try to avoid playing each other. Not sure if that will apply to Notre Dame too.

I'd be surprised if ND isn't on the schedule in the next few years. Not sure how seriously it has been discussed, but I have heard that a neutral site game was floated out there.

I met Larry Williams while he was our AD, and he told me that everyone at ND and MU was on board with scheduling games except for Mike Brey. Don't know if Mike has changed his mind in the meantime.
-
I would tell him to suck it up. Makes sense for everybody. MU is never gonna be TERRIBLE, neither is ND really. Alums on both sides are interested. Tradition, etc.
-
UL and/or ND would be great in terms of quality opponents and tradition.
I'd also be all in for a series with Minnesota...a 70-mile drive from my house. We had some great games with them back in the 70s.
-
Sign me up for UL and ND. If required to choose between the two, give me UL over ND.
-
I would like to see a home and home with UNC. Would be good for recruiting purposes.

Agreed. ND often has good teams, but UL usually has great ones.

I hope we do. I am curious to see how Marquette does against IU at the dawn of the Tanless Era

I would like one of either UL/ND and either Minnesota/Iowa/Iowa State. The UL/ND for historic rivalry purpose and the other to add in a local midwest school.
If we can add in one more, Gonzaga/Wichita State would be awesome.

So I see the double header today at the UC had reported attendance of about 19,700 (I'm assuming that means total tickets sold, since no attendance numbers are given for the OSU-UNC early tilt).
What do you think an MU-ND game would draw there in a year where, say, neither team was ranked?
-
19,700.
-
Selfishly, I'd like to see them do it with UConn.

Don't worry they'll be in the conference soon enough. ;D

I'd like both and personally prefer Notre Dame to Louisville because I hate ND but am pretty much agnostic when it comes to 'Ville.
Regarding Louisville and some others that aren't a decades-old tradition as ND was, I always ask: "What would the other school get out of it?" We'd get sellouts at the Bradley Center, but Louisville already sells out all of its games and already plays a great non-con schedule. Same is true of many other schools mentioned.
Personally, I think a Marquette-Illinois series would be a winner. Illinois -- not Northwestern, DePaul or ND -- is the most popular basketball school in Chicago, and we often go after many of the same recruits. Illinois doesn't automatically fill its arena for the crap teams, either, so I would think they'd love packing the place for MU.
And while it would be a great home-and-home, it also would be awesome at the United Center ... although Illinois would have HC advantage, that's for sure.

First off, you're a little rusty on your MU history if you lump UL with "others that aren't a decades-old tradition" with MU. We've played them 69 times - more than all but a handful of opponents. By comparison, we've played Illinois 14 times. The only schools we've played more than UL are Wisky, ND, DePaul, Creighton, Detroit and Loyola.
While I'm sure we're way behind Kentucky and Indiana on UL's nonconference wish list, I'd argue that MU isn't as far behind as you think. I suspect their fans would enjoy a renewal of the series.

Make that 2!

I could definitely see U-Conn if Diamond Stone heads there.
-
My best friend is a UL fan. We went to nearly every game between MU and UL from '96 to '13. MU I would think would be about 5th on the list of teams their fans would like to play annually in out-of-conference games, behind UK, Memphis, Indiana and Cincinnati. Being as there doesn't seem to be a great chance of series developing with Indiana and Cincinnati, it's not as far away as you think. MU is actually 3rd among major-conference opponents for UL in games played against them after Memphis and Cincy.

I'm going to hope (and assume) that we aren't creating our schedule based on what recruits from our area go where.

ND>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>any other game.

10,000'ish

Fair enough.
And I definitely would welcome a Marquette-Louisville series.
Speaking only for myself, however, I'd prefer an annual game against Notre Dame.

Interesting, supposedly Creighton scheduled a home and home with ASU starting next year as well.....
