Brian Snow tweeted today that we are involved with sg Melvin Johnson who decomitted from Miami earlier this year. Johnson is a top 100 player and is in the 2012 class.
-
Well that'd be a nice save from the TJ Taylor situation.
-
It puts Buzz in a tough spot because MU is in on a lot of good players in the 2013 class. But at the same time, MU needs more depth in the backcourt this year.

A bird in the hand...

@PaintTouches
Per @BSnowScout, Marquette is looking at 2012 SG Melvin Johnson, who de-committed from Miami recently. Top 100 player. #mubb
@PaintTouches
Even if Marquette doesn't get Melvin, it shows they want another player for '12. Loaded '13 class isn't excuse to be short-handed this year.
@PaintTouches
So while there may be better guards in '13, REALLY tough for #mubb to go into this season with 11 schollies + Thomas.
...not claiming to have broken any news on Marquette's interest in Johnson, but let's mix the discussion up instead of essentially C/P'ing ideas.

Melvin Johnson
School: Newark (N.J.) St. Benedict's
The Buzz: His previous high school (Rice in New York) closed down but the Miami-bound shooting guard has made an easy transition. He's got one of the better mid-range games in the country and is a scorer cut out of the mold of Missouri's Marcus Denmon.
Old man Hurley???

if you're going to pass on a top 100 player in a position of need (Johnson) you had better be damn sure that you're getting the guy thats the reason you passe (Nunn). with Nunn waiting for UK, UCLA, this is a no-brainer. what a rabbit out of the hat it would be
-
But if Nunn doesn't commit rather soon, do you wait and let good players pass you by?
I say, in most cases, "No."

my bad, i realized my response was incredibly ambiguous. I totally agree with you - meant that you can't afford to pass on Johnson while waiting for Nunn.

Sorry PT,
Didn't know you broke the news that there is a lot of talent in the 2013 class and that marquette is in the mix with a lot of them. I just read what recruiting guys are saying on twitter. And I assumed that with TJ Taylor leaving and Todd Mayo being an unknown, there will be 2 less guards on the roster. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to make those statements.

No way. From what I've seen, Johnson is not a scrub. He's a top 100 talent. If he's interested, you grab him. MU can't wait around while Nunn explores other opportunities. If Nunn wants to hold out for a UCLA or Kentucky offer, that's his business. But MU can't sit around waiting if a top player like Johnson is ready to commit.
-
Correction: Mel is from St Benedict's. Bob Hurley Sr. is at St Anthony's
-
Thank you kind sir. That's good imo.

Is that why your website uses PT's RSS feed? I'm not trying to act all high and mighty, but let's be real.
Getting to back on topic, Johnson would be a welcome addition, but I think this might show you what Buzz thinks Jake Thomas can give the team this season. If Mayo returns, they're likely down 1 perimeter player. If it isn't Thomas, Buzz will want that spot filled quickly.

Nunn is ranked in the 50's. I have to wonder, if he is not overranked, because why would UCLA or Kentucky not offer a guard ranked in the 50's. Maybe UCLA has limited scholarships availabe, but every year Kentucky losses several players to NBA. Kentucky needs some players that will stick around for more than a year.

I use your twitter because the tweets are Marquette basketball related only. No other accounts that I have seen do that.

I think Kentucky and their fans are ok with recruitng one or two year players ranked in the top 20. They did win the national championship this year.

I really believe it's because the top 50 is beyond them. As crazy as that is, they don't need to lock past the top 30 or so players in the country, unless they have a serious need. It's incredible, but true.

I think this is way more than just Thomas. They don't have any depth without TJT...not just this year but moving forward.

Going after a SG in general is in terms of depth, for sure. Going after a SG for the 2012 class, though, could have Thomas ties. There are a lot of 2013 players Marquette is in on, and they have never (to my knowledge) been tied with Johnson until now.

So you think this only occurs with TJT leaving?

Never read that either. First I heard of it was after the departure of TJT.

We did have a St Benedict's alumnus though - Dwight Burke.
As far as Johnson, absolutely we should want him. Who are we confident returns in the backcourt next year? Derrick Wilson, Blue, and Ferguson. We can't rely on just them for success. Duane Wilson will be a freshman, and after that we're hoping for Nunn to commit. Count me in for wanting a little more insurance...if Nunn doesn't commit and we get a freshman who just isn't ready to contribute right away, if there are injuries, if there's a transfer. A top 100 guard who can come to campus in a few weeks and join in, let's hope he's interested.

so much for that... to VCU

Wait - I thought Buzz ran off TJ so that he could bring in Melvin.

Yup. Damn. Must be closer to home.

I don't think Reggie Smith found a home for this semester yet.

So he's just going to sit at home watching old movies on video tape?

Committing to VCR is definitely old school and a very rare thing to see from a kid nowadays since kids generally prefer DVR. Fortunately VCU still has a supply of video tape as this is now becoming in shorter and shorter supply.

He must be traditional.

My thoughts exactly. Nunn may be waiting for an offer that may never come.

Johnson committed to VCU (Shaka Smart) last night.
