[New to PT] Big East Roster Tracker

https://painttouches.com/2024/04/19/2024-big-east-roster-tracker/

We did this two seasons ago and decided to bring it back this season. An all in one resource that shows what each Big East team is losing, what they're gaining, and what's still up in the air this offseason. We'll be updating every few days.

Marquette looking very stable.

Depaul and Xavier looking very unstable but bringing in a lot transfers to hopefully come back stronger.

St. John's looking very unstable and no movement yet in the portal

Mentions Hopkins of Providence returning from injury as an addition. No mention of Sean Jones for Marquette.

Makes me appreciate stability.

I noticed that too, but my guess is that's because he is not expected to be able to play at the beginning of the season. Also, there has been speculation that he will redshirt rather than coming in later. Hopkins will begin in November.

Honestly, not sure we'll see Jones next year. If his timetable is February, is it worth him giving up a year of eligibility like freshman Junior Cadougan did for 6 weeks of playing time?

For the player, preserving eligibility is in their best interest.  For the school, it depends.

Keeping Greg Elliott out hurt Marquette's guard depth in 2019.  Then Greg used his final year of eligibility at Pittsburgh.  So Marquette didn't benefit in that scenario.

If Tre, Zaide, and Damarius are playing well then it makes sense to let Sean sit out.  But if we need depth and Sean in healthy enough to play effectively, I say play him.

Agree that it will be circumstantial, but Greg did play 4 years at Marquette and I believe appeared in every game he was available for. No one in 2018-19 knew that a global pandemic would change eligibility rules or that Greg's coach would be fired in the middle of said pandemic. I also think there was a mutual comfort level with Greg leaving after 2022.

I don't think Marquette was harmed at all in that scenario.

I do agree that it will be circumstantial. We'll see where the team is at when Sean is available, but I do think it is difficult to bring in a rotation guard recovering from injury that late in the season. Looking back at Junior, that was the definition of a wasted year of eligibility.

The assumption is that he would be cleared obviously.

Yes, obviously Sean has to be healthy enough to be cleared.  When he is cleared changes the calculus.

Dec 1 or early?  Likely return.

~Jan 1  maybe 50/50

~Feb 1 Unlikely return.

It really just depends on how rehab goes.

To me, the other questions are where and how he would fit into the roster midway into the season?

My reasoning is that based both on what's publically known and what I've heard from others about the injury, I'm very doubtful that Sean will play next season. But it is a fair point that I don't know that to be the case. During my next update I'll add him to Marquette's "In Flux" category.

Roster tracker updated. Every team except Marquette has an update this week, continuing our quiet offseason. Meanwhile Seton Hall has lost every one of their starters and all but one of their significant bench players. We also added some projected starting lineups and it is not looking good for the Pirate or Wildcats, both of whom we project starting multiple freshmen at this point.

I think it’s possible Seton Hall’s experience in the NIT won’t matter next season

Isn't there something like 1700 players in the portal?  It is certainly going to the interesting watching some of the high major teams scramble to put together teams filled with mid major players in a hurry only to go 10-20 for the year.

Trey Alexander announced he’s going pro - although this was generally expected, still a big loss for Creighton.
