Oso planning to go pro
On a similar note, there were two university related stories locally. Fresh off their first NCAA basketball appearance ever, U of Hartford announced plans to drop from DI to DIII to save money. There are some pissed off people.Simultaneously, U of New Haven is building additional sports facilities on campus with the intent to go from DII to DI. Their football team would play FCS, not FBS.
Traci Carter got the Hawks to the NCAA and then they drop the program. I think there should be more waivers available for schools to play D1 in certain sports and D3 in others.
Maybe if they did FCS football and played in the Spring....that'd fill a niche
The Hartford example is going to be interesting. It seems like there are a lot of these private schools in the northeast that in these one bid leagues. If they don't help you with student recruitment, then they are just cost drains.
College football is stupid. Pro football is awesome
The 20+ universities that have closed for good recently were all DIII schools
Even if it was from the bad years in the 1950s, is there any game footage anywhere? Even just highlights? You have to think the Libraries would have something.
Sentenced to 5 years at age 85. https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/2024/04/22/ex-giant-pete-hall-85-sentenced-to-five-years-in-prison/73418521007/
This guy was a one man crime wave
See, this proves we have the chops to hang with the SEC.
IIRC during my four years at Marquette, '65-'69, the Wisconsin football team won only 1 game.
https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/schools/wisconsin/index.htmlLooks like 5 with 0 in the last two years.
the crazy thing is that Wisconsin played in the 1960 and 1963 Rose Bowls (I’m not ever born yet…but love this history of college football), the later vs USC, in what is still considered one of the great Rose Bowl games. Yet, a few seasons after, Wisconsin can’t win a game! And they pretty much were garbage until the early ‘80’s under Dave McClain. Unfortunately and untimely, McClain passed, thus the program went back to vapors until they bring in Barry Alvarez from ND. Anyway, more than everyone cares to know, but interesting that success was not sustained and so far between.
When the head coach of those 60s teams, Milt Bruhn, retired, the Badgers chose John Coatta (alum and assistant coach at Florida State) over Bo Schembechler (then head coach at Miami Ohio). His negative experience is why Bobby Knight declined the Badgers' offer to coach a couple of years later.
isn’t there a story about how Bo is in Madison for an interview and the Badgers AD doesn’t even show up? Or something along those lines.
Anyway, it would be interesting to see what would have happened had Dave McClain not passed away so young. He was decidedly mediocre. Maybe the football equivalent of Greg Gard.So they don't bottom out under Morton. Does Donna Shalala come in and clean house?
