Title: Shaka/reporting/tough questions
Post by: Knight Commission on September 04, 2014, 10:55:19 PM
Most of us think we know what happened with the Shaka saga. While  Parrish in his own words will not back away from asking the tough question...such  as when will  Coach K retire?....why won't he ask the real tough questions as to who Shaka wanted as AD?  What did Shaka tell Doc? Why did Shaka consider MU?  Why not Howland?  Was Shaka in Milwaukee?

Further why wouldn't that long~haired hippie from the local newspaper, or the Woeful from Racine report it....they know the answers to these questions.

The whole Shaka order makes me laugh.
Shaka may or may not have indicated interest.  the bottom line is he is the sexy, young head coach that led a cinderella to the Final 4.  And he is the coach that every top program wants to be their next head coach.  He is young, well spoken, and proven.
What happened was a crap storm scenario where social media and "new age" so called reporters wanted to scoop everyone.  This may have been the first time it happened to MU, however, one only need look to the University of Illinois exactly one year before to see literally the exact same scenario play out.
It happens and we all recall how palpable the excitement was.
Where the whole situation goes from memorable, silly and comical to absolutely stupid and pathetic is when a local website ( a pay website be that) tries to scoop everyone with the announcement and the reason to join my website and pay me for the inside knowledge that is demonstrated by being the first.  Now, is this shameless?  I would have to say, no.  Obviously he was getting word from some sources, clearly the quality of them in hindsight was not what he thought they were.  But hey make hay while the sun shines and worse case is it turns out not to be true.
The thing I dont like at all is the follow up that he said "yes" and was going to fly to MU but then his wife said no and he wanted a hand in the AD choice.  That is so illogical and is probably the stupidest thing in the whole episode.
Unfortunately in todays society when people make mistakes no one wants to own up to it anymore.  People come up with BS excuses to try to save face.  Just admit you were wrong and over reached.  It's forgiveable.  People make themselves even less credible by the followup fabrications than they did by the initial mistake.
I offer up Andy Pettitte versus he other PED users as another case.

You got it all wrong.  That ain't the shaka (that's "hang loose"), and the correct wording for a surfer is "knarly, brah."

Actually that part of the story has been confirmed by others as well.

This is your opinion.  Not a fact.

And it happens that multiple people heard otherwise.  Perhaps from the same source, but likely not.

I read it.  Shaka wanting a say in the AD has been reported by multiple places.  You "don't like it" and say "it is complete BS," but I have heard it from enough places to suggest that there is some truth there.

And I also disagree that IWB reported on #donedeal just to drive traffic to his site.  He was told something and jumped the gun.  He has admitted that even here.

I'll admit it. I did read your entire post. It was a mistake.

It isn't complete bs. It is oversimplified and missing a few pieces. But its not complete bs.

Well, why not simply enlighten us all instead of carrying on like teenage girls with a big secret about who likes whom?

Big picture:

Shaka was interested, and likely "agreed" to take the job (in principle).

(IWB got wind of it, thus #donedeal)

When it came down to working out the details, Shaka's camp and MU couldn't agree on final terms.

Deal is off.

I don't think it's BS or hard to believe at all. Think big picture. This stuff happens all of the time.

And apparently one of the final terms was a significant say in who the athletic director would be.

And thank God Cords stood his ground.  Kind of tired of coaches that think they are bigger than Marquette. Thinking like that is Favre like.  Look at the damage he sustained.

Regardless, we don't need to the actual details to understand what happened. Maybe MU didn't give him the right parking spot. Whatever. Doesn't matter. It's just a detail.

- Deal was agreed to in principle
- (rumor spread from IWB)
- Details of the deal couldn't be agreed upon between MU and Shaka Corp.
- MU moved on to other candidates

Easy.

I wouldn't necessarily view it in that lens.  He had a good relationship with his AD at VCU.  He was concerned about the vacancy, and he wanted to make sure he was going to be comfortable with the new guy.

I completely understand why he had that POV.  If you don't know who your boss is going to be, it is hard to pull that trigger when you are already in a good situation.  But I also completely understand why MU said "we can't do that."
