Title: Best recruits
Post by: Afroman on June 18, 2019, 11:04:38 AM
Who would you say was the best recruit for each MU coach going back to Rick Majerus?

Majerus is easy.  Rip Van Winkle.

Best as in highest rated? Or best results after their college career was over?

Whatever you think ... most impactful/most notable (i.e. for Wojo, I pick Howard over Ellenson).

Buzz:  DJO, overall career slightly better than Butler and Crowder
Wojo: Howard

So per your question, is Hutchins considered a KO recruit even though he played for Deane?

Majerus is easy.  Rip Van Winkle.

For Majerus I'd go Tony Smith--recruited by Majerus/played for Dukiet & O'Neill
Dukiet: Tyrone Baldwin
O'Neill: McIlvaine
Deane: Wardle
Crean: Wade
Buzz: Crowder
Wojo: Markus

KO: Tony Miller
Deane: Wardle
Crean: Wade
Buzz: Jimmy
Wojo: Markus

Key and Mac were great, but without Tony getting them the ball, I don't know if we'd look back at that class with the same fondness. Went with Jimmy over Jae/DJO just because he set the tone culturally, and those guys kept it going.

Wade is the obvious choice for TC, but Dominic would be second for me. Statistically, an all-time great, and helped pull them out of that two year funk after the Final Four.

Lazar set up the culture moreso than Jimmy in my opinion. The whole reason that jimmy became obsessed with defense after 2010 was because he let Pondexter get an easy step on him against Washington.  He said so in an interview in that docuseries

This is a great topic BTW.  My choices:

Majerus: Tony Smith
Dukiet: Trevor Powell
O'Neill: Tony Miller
Deane: Wardle
Crean: Wade
Buzz: Crowder

As far as guys who set the tone for those who followed, Ron Curry is a great example. Was the leading scorer (14.4 ppg) and rebounder (8.1 rpg) during KO's first 20-win season at Marquette in 1992-93. Have to think some of his toughness rubbed off on Mac. Loved watching him play.

Majerus - Tony Smith
Dukiet - Trevor Powell
O'Neill - Tony Miller
Deane - Brian Wardle
Crean - Dwyane Wade
Buzz - Jae Crowder
Wojo - Markus Howard

Tough time deciding between Miller, Hutchins and Key for O'Neill and Crowder/Butler for Buzz and I think I would have taken Sam over Howard if he and his brother stayed.

You don't have the guy who Bazz stopped practice to pray with the team after he scored his first basket...in practice...during the second semester of the season as Bazz's worst recruit?

By the way, a 9 game World Series winning streak?  What an odd dude.

Yous may have been bad, but Reggie was just a dumpster fire.

I limited all my selections to guys who actually stepped on the floor and played minutes.  That eliminated TJ Taylor as well.  And Gabe Levin in the case of Wojo.

Fluffy, you are a bad man.
I kind of missed Jamail Jones as one of the biggest MU busts.

Reggie Smith actually went on to have a decent career at Eastern Illinois. Averaged double digit points for them IIRC.

Jamal Ferguson was the one I thought was the biggest stretch.

Is there a limit to how many guys we can select as "worst recruit" by Dukiet?

Second runner up Nick Noskowiak.

Second runner up Nick Noskowiak.

From the reporting at the time, it sounds like he lost a promising career to mental health issues. I hope he got the help he needed.

Jamail and Jamal were loads better than Erik Williams.

Eh...Erik Williams went on to have a solid season at Sam Houston State and had better stats than Ferguson when he was at Marquette. Ferguson ended up being a back of the rotation player in the MEAC.

I find the results interesting from Buzz's tenure.  Obviously Wade would be Crean's more multiple reasons - he was an elite college men's basketball player at Marquette, led the team to the Final Four, and became an elite NBA player for over a decade, winning multiple NBA Championships).  For Buzz, there was a mixture of very strong collegiate players (who, like Wade, were unheralded recruits), that had deep runs in the tournament at Marquette (S16/E8), but had varying degrees of success in the NBA (Jimmy became a top-10, Jae became a very solid long-term rotational player and DJO only had a cup of coffee in the NBA).

While Jimmy is clearly the best NBA player of Buzz's tenure, DJO and Jae were much more polished and valuable collegiate players IMO.  However, long-term, I do think Jimmy has helped elevate Marquette's brand and reputation to a similar position that Wade had (while not nearly at a high-level though) due to his success in the NBA and for his efforts to market MU outside the NBA.

Wojo's tenure still has time to churn out future players, but - right now - it is undoubtedly Markus.  With his skills on the court, and his role as an ambassador off of it, he has been Wojo's best four-year player hands down.  I don't know what his future NBA prospects will be, but there is no denying that he has continued to carry Marquette as a top-level basketball program with skilled players.
