St John's
« on: February 08, 2018, 08:15:31 AM »
A team of slashers and wings.    Greg and Jamal are going to be needed.    Hopefully, Theo is healthy enough to play.   Well, hopefully he feels better, first and foremost.   The flu sucks.      But I am not sure Harry and Matt are going to be quick enoughwith the style the Johnnies play.    Not deep.   But remember, of MU's nine, 3 play the same position and that position may not matter as much as it did against Delgado.   Dam up Ponds and win.

If Mullen keeps his team focused to beat Marquette after knocking off Duke & Nova, he should win coach of the year.

Meanwhile Wojo has the best bulletin board material out there.

I like how this sets up from an emotional standpoint.

Hoping 1 of 2 things.

They fall into a lull due to their 2 huge wins and we catch them riding way too high.

Or 2) they are crazy exhausted. stJ only plays 6 man rotation. We are able to play sometimes 9. We will be a bit more fresh with the bench.

Ponds has gone all 40 in their past 3 games. Hoping he hits a wall on Saturday.

Drain the Ponds.  52% of their points come on twos, not our strength defensively.

Yeah, really need Theo to get healthy. He's our only rim protection to speak of.

I would guess they put a combination of people on Ponds.  Need some length on him.

They DID something. Bulletin board: SJU 81, #4 Duke 77...SJU 79, #1 Nova 75.

This is the one team of the year where I will advocate heavy use of zone. They are undisciplined and like to slash. Use a 3/4 court press to make them work and wear them out and fall back into a zone to contain their slashers. Concerned that they love to get steals and transition and we have had some really ugly turnovers in the last few games.

I do know, Newsie is right on you knowing ball.

Last 2 wins aside, one typically doesn't forget the feeling of having lost 11 straight games. I don't anticipate that they are suddenly enamored with their own press clippings. They will come ready to play.

With SJU's last 2 games, they are now a quadrant 1 road game.

If we win on Saturday, we'll be 4-8 in Q1 games.  That smokes the rest of the teams around the bubble.  Add in no bad losses...and well.
I would take the Rick SLU program right now.

Before the two wins in a row St. John's previous 10 games were for the most part, very close. We all knew they were better than 0-11 in BEast but I didn't think it was this close
@SH 70-75 (L)
@Creighton 71-78 (L)
DePaul 74-91 (L) Second to worst loss
Georgetown 66-69 (L)
Nova 71-78 (L)
@Xavier 82-88 (L)
@Georgetown 89-93 (L)
Creighton 63-68 (L)
@Butler 45-70 (L) We feel your pain
Xavier 68-73 (L)

Take out the DePaul and @Butler game and they are losing games by 5 points.
Hopefully they are not getting over the hump just in time to play us.

Noticed this too. Glad you pointed it out.
I'm having flashbacks to last year where we were a hot mess of turnovers because we couldn't handle the pressure and athleticism of Ponds and Co.

Hope Theo gets better and is ready to play. We'll need him.
One key to their last two victories was being efficient from deep (40%+) and some very clutch makes down the stretch. Ponds takes the most 3s but is 23% on the season. He was 2/5 and 4/8 last two. Hoping he comes back to earth a bit.

Yah, we need smart and conservation Rowsey.  If he's making dumb passes, he may have 10 TOs.

The real question is to we hang a banner if we beat St. Johns: "Beat Saint John's*" (*Beat Duke, Beat Nova)
Assume what I say should be in teal if it doesn't pass the smell test for you.

Does the Q1 status for St John's remain for us if they slip in RPI standings in the final weeks of the season? Or does the fact that they were in the top 75 when we played them stay on the resume?

St John's is horrible at defending the 3 and really good at protecting the rim.....hmmm

St John's is terrible at rebounding and at shooting in general but especially 3s.....hmmm

St John's plays the same 5 players 84% of the time....hmmm

If I were to use my Magic 8 ball, it'd come up pretty consistently as "all signs point to yes" on the question of whether or not we win.

Nova was 8-33 on 3s last nite.
