Much like being a CEO of a large company, their compensation is great but the pressure and stress that go along with it could crack the strongest man over time.

No doubt.
And the pacing and constant diet coke sipping ain't helping the image.

Let me sum up what the other thread on this topic realized. Kenny Johnson was TC's third assistant coach. He got hired by Louisville to be the Associate Head Coach. Johnson got a promotion. No rats scurrying here.

You know better than this, TAMU. Never let facts interfere with any opportunity to bash Crean or Buzz!

I must be missing the promotion part:

Judging by his recruiting success, I have a hard time believing he was TC's "3rd Assistant".

Johnson was hired to be Louisville's Associate Head Coach. That is the number one assistant job on a staff.

Two players arrested today. Not a good off-season, to say the least.

Drunk driving a couple of months ago, underage drinking now.....nothing to see here. Kids being kids. Not a culture problem at IU. Not indicative of coach Crean losing the program. Unfortunately, sometimes students engage in minor rule breaking. Not indicative of anything to do with the coach. He can't babysit them 24/7. The onus is on the student athletes. Unfortunate that they made poor choices. If it happened anywhere else, say, Marquette for example, my attitude would be the same.

Sorry, but couldn't disagree more on drunk driving. Definitely something to see there. Underage drinking, no problem. But drunk driving can ruin lives. End lives. That is no small matter.

Wojo...wear the light blue polo, dude.

Or wear the gold.

Uh, I think Denny Crum won his first Ship in 1980 so UL was the better program even in that year

Yeah, he surely doesn't want anyone to think he's from Marquette!

Crum won his first Ship with Scooter and Rodney who were all set to sign with Marquette until the now infamous "Majerus and the Trombone Incident."

Yeah, I would HATE it if we ended up with a bunch of terrible hacks like the Plumlees, Singler and Scheyer. It's not as if those honkies ever won a title for Duke after Wojo helped recruit them.

What was Majerus and the trombone incident?
Scooter McCray was a strong MU lean, if not a verbal commitment, when Rick went to his home to continue to show the love from MU. When Rick got in the house, Mrs. McCray who knew Rick well said that Scooter was home and go on up to his room. Somehow the door was opened, and Scooter was apparently involved in an auto erotic exercise euphemistically referred to playing his trombone. Embarrassment ensued, and Scooter and later his brother Rodney McCray ended up enrolling at Louisville.
-
What was Majerus and the trombone incident?
Scooter and Rodney were solid Marquette locks. On a recruiting swing back east Majerus dropped by their house in the evening. Their Mom told Rick to go on up to Scooter's room. Majerus burst in on Scooter who was playing the trombone. Majerus was shocked to find Scooter playing his instrument, I guess because spending time with his music meant time away from honing his basketball skills. At the very least Majerus felt that investing not just the time but expending energy on the trombone sapped strength from his basketball.
I'm not sure if Majerus felt Scooter should quit music or what but Scooter was so embarrassed on Majerus discovering him in the act of practicing that he rushed from his room and fled down the stairs. Majerus was equally chagrined by the incident and their relationship was never the same. Scooter then Rodney ended up playing for Denny Crum who must have been less bothered by Scooter's musical interest or perhaps simply was unaware.
The decline of Marquette basketball can be traced directly to Majerus walking in on Scooter practicing the scales.

Drunk driving matters. I was too flippant about it in my post.

That Scooter story is a pile. MU lost Scooter when Louisville money showed up. Pure and simple, we could not pay as much.
-

Gato
Not a pile. Part of the lore. What differentiates the MU Brand is that it has always embraced eccentricity. The past is filled with characters, events, and stage props that would make the Duke faithful shudder. Can you imagine Jay Bilas whipping out a switchblade to cut down the nets? Goose Brell doing so was an essential part of the narrative. Majerus walking in on Scooter may or may not be completely accurate but it is gold filament in one of sports' richest tapestries.

At about the time of the McCray instrumental, didn't MU lose Rod Foster on signing day along with one or two other verbals that conspired to devastate the program (Ricky Olson, maybe)
-
That I can agree with. Our history is so incredibly fun, funny and epic, the stories have taken on a life of their own--but they need to be preserved. So many great stories from Al through Rick, KO even some good Deane stories. Above all, Al's stories are the best in all of sports. I do not think Dick Enberg's play did that era justice.

Marquette was a lock for a number of studs that didn't survive the transition from Al to Hank. Not just the McCrays but Foster and Bowie, too. What pains me still is that Denny Crum wanted the MU job badly but the university put loyalty first. As I understand, Al was not convinced Hank was the best replacement, despite his talk of Hank's X's & O's prowess.
Olson was later, during Majerus' time.

No, Foster was later. The loss of Scooter also lost Rodney, which was the start of the end. MU brought in Artie, Worthen, Michael Wilson, Marquardt. MU thought they had Scooter. With
Scooter they would have been pretty impressive. Marquardt, Toone, McCray, Wilson and Sam. Good team, next year bring in Rodney for Toone and they might have kept it going in the 80's.

I agree on Al's place in the pantheon. What gets little service is his role in civil rights. I have mentioned a few times that Al and Bobby Kennedy were cited by Arthur Schlesinger in Robert Kennedy and His Times as being two of the most significant players on the national stage in driving change in a society still resistant to equality regardless of race, religion, or creed.
And I am sincere in saying that I prefer Marquette's corned beef and chitlins over Duke's cucumber sandwiches every time. Al getting into fist fights with players, Larry McNeill's wife getting into fist fights in the stands, the unis, tuxes and Bentleys, sheepskin jackets, Butch nearly beating the US, Give 'em hell, Al... You could never make this stuff up.

yup ... Scooter McCray entered the Ville in 1978, Foster to UCLA in 1979 (same year as Rodney to the Ville)

UK was gonna win that battle ... that bit in Tark's book about how UK rented a room in Lebanon for an assistant coach to be with on Bowie every day was startling. That said, one of my old bosses grew up with Bernard Toone. He figured Al spent more time in their high school cafeteria than most of the students.

The Bowie case probably more money than MU was willing to, uh, invest. But we were in on him first and he gave us a hard look. Another factor is that Ray Meyer jumped in where Al left off and skimmed the Chicago cream that put MU first. Correlation of factors triggered a series of cascading effects from which we have never fully recovered. People here speak of Blue Bloods based on a single coach's stewardship. Fact is, under Al we were a Blue Blood.
-
Right here in River City, y'all.

Completely agree. The different is what makes it interesting and fun and differentiates MU. For better or worse, the Al era defined the MU brand and still resonates to this day.
