Good grief. That's awful news.

Early reports are odd (critically injured; hit moments after exiting car).

At what point do the program's supporters place blame on Crean for these repeated legal issues? (or transfers... or losses)?

Rough. But they can be good this year.
Thanks for ruining summer, Canada.

Why exactly is it BS? You think people are incapable of doing both?

Because it is people trying to be funny, or prove how smart they are or whatever, when a kid is fighting for his life. It has nothing to do with Tom Crean.

My response was to Teddy in a different thread that then got merged into this one.

The guy was more worried about the coach then a seriously injured player.....that's BS coming just a few hours later after an accident like this.  IMO.

Who was trying to be funny? Who was showing how smart they are? How do you know the kid is "fighting for his life?"

Was it a terrible accident? Yes, but why is it somehow out of bounds to mention the impact on the team, crean, etc? To think that this does not have an impact on Crean and his perception, given the fact he really hasn't lived up to the standards of that fan base (justified or not), you're kidding yourself.

Let's not forget about the other basketball player who hit Davis. As Crean said this morning, the Hoosier family will rally around him as well.

You're a bit short on details.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

Completely classless post. A kid is in the hospital in serious condition and you want to make fun.

Passengers in the car claiming that Davis ran into the roadway. Could be a tragic accident that wasn't necessarily on the driver...though he had been drinking underage (0.025 BAC).

Nothing but prayers for Devin Davis, his family, friends and teammates.    To do otherwise right now is inappropriate.

Not sure if it's the same incident. I recall one player leaving the other kid in the car and taking off, leading to team problems. This could be that incident, but if so it seems an early account.

You just wonder what the heck happened in the IU situation and hope everybody is OK physically, however team problems after something like this could linger.

Prayers for a speedy recovery for Mr. Davis and for the well being of the Indiana campus.  I can't possibly imagine the guilt Mr. Holt is feeling.  The kid likely had 2 beers; far fewer than many other Frosh had on Friday night.  Sure he violated rules.  So does everyone.  So did I.

This is a tragic accident; one that all parents of new college students fear.  Of course the light shines brightly because basketball players are involved.  A reminder for all is that young college students and cars don't mix very well.  Peace.

A coach can only do so much.  Can't babysit college kids 24/7.

Although this is true, it is his job to make sure things like this don't happen and sully the reputation of the University.  If it does happen, fair or not, it is usually the coaches/ADs head on the chopping block.

Part of their job is to create a culture representative of the University, if that culture fails and nothing happens publicly...no big deal.  If an occasional public black-eye occurs, that can be overcome.  But when it is repeated and often, heads typically fall.

A must unpleasant story and I pray for the kids health.  But ultimately some degree of responsibility works its way up to the coach.

I'd hate to think that the way I (and most of my fellow MU students) acted during a weekend night out represented the culture of the university.

When you are in the public spotlight, which the players are, then their actions do affect the image of the culture of the University.

How dare this go do anything other than pray for Devin Davis?

http://www.indystar.com/story/sports/columnists/gregg-doyel/2014/11/02/doyel-do-hoosiers-dig-crean-enough-to-stop-screwing-up/18373007/

Put a letter agreement in front of Crean that acknowledges five alcohol violations in a calendar year is deemed proper cause for dismissal, and when he refuses to sign it, fire him for cause on the basis that by not signing, he must be condoning the actions of his players.

Either way, it's a lawsuit.  Moral of story: Crean is going to be the coach at IU for the foreseeable future come hell or high water.

Yeah, if not for the buyout he'd likely be gone, but there are 12 million reasons for IU to keep him.

Heh, so Doyel left CBS and ended up at the Indy Star?  When he nails it, he nails it.  Not sure if it's the recruiting profile or the campus environment or what, but this stuff was the least of our worries when he was here.

You answered your own question.

If you look at the campus and predominantly "off-campus" areas of IU (basically, draw a triangle along 3rd St, College Ave and State 46) you're talking about 2-3 sq miles.  The same areas at Marquette covers about 0.25 sq mi.  So you have a little more than 4x the number of students at IU on about 10x the area of Marquette.  Larger areas with less density means more "places to hide" which can foster greater acts (in magnitude and frequency) of buffoonery.

You also don't have the "townie-factor" at Marquette.  Well, you do, but the townies around our campus aren't exactly the "let's all get drunk/stoned and friendly" types... they play a greater role in keeping students in line (and watching their six) than being a catalyst for mischief like they do in B-Town.

Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.
