All had special place in my heart and my life. Spent way too much time in bars during my eight year under grad time at MU. I guess maybe that is why it took eight years. Was a great run!

Really hard question.  I mean .. each bar had it's character.  The Ardmore was great for Import Night .. and you never went to the 'Lanch before midnight..  etc.

I think it's hilarious that the Lighthouse made it into your poll before OD's, OP's, State House or Good Times.  We were a house, rather than a bar.  We made it on the list of the top ten drinking establishments and favorite buildings on campus in the 1984 yearbook.  Many of us were from the Chicago area so we learned early on how to stuff a ballot box.  In any event, I voted Lighthouse.

Very tough call.  I went with the Gym, because that was a bar in the heart of campus which I frequented all four years (the other which was a four year bar was the Lanche) and on any given night.  Many of the others were only one night a week spots or we only spent time there during freshman year or senior year etc.

I would also support OP's, because it opened and became very popular during my time at MU; watched many Blackhawk games there; had two friends who were OPs bartenders; and it is where I had my first "Marquette Date" with Mrs. Legs.

Like choosing between your children.   Or which SI swimsuit model is the hottest.    Some questions are just unanswerable.

I actually wasn't there during this time period. I am a grad of the 2000s. Thus, all I have experienced in this list is Hegartys, Angelos and the Gloc. I had no idea what the Lighthouse was. I just saw it in threads. My bad. It shall stay in the poll.

The Circle Inn was our high school hangout in the late '70's--next to the Ardmore.  And it had a dance floor.

As you may know, the owner had incurable pancreatic cancer and wanted to make sure that the property ended up serving students for the generations to come.  MU successfully purchased the property and even the Angelo's recipes.  The sale to Sobelmen's included several conditions one of which was they were required be open before students arrived back in August 2011.  Good ending.

What about the Midget on 24th and Wells? Aptly named. Tiny. Indescribably smoky. The owner, Frank Herald, was a great guy. Sadly, it burned down a few years after I graduated.

With no Midget on the list, I had to choose State House. Good specials, crazy owner, pretty girls liked hanging there. OK, the real reason: One of my best friends bartended there so my buds and I drank for free. After closing, we'd hang out and have the "Olympics": darts, pool, Donkey Kong, Missile Command. The loser had to drink a shot. So did the winner.

After Frank died, his son sold it to Mike Dugan who ran it until it closed. Mike later died. Remember the Blatz baseball sculpture in back. Buy a round for the house and they rang the bell.  Where my Name originated. Still have a t-shirt somewhere.

Went with the Gym as Plan B.

This will come off as blasphemous:
Being of the millennials crowd on this board, I only have been to two of the above listed bars Heags and Blows.
I never really cared for either. I had friends swear by Angelo's pizza and double your dough night at Heags but neither were really my place. That being said its still unfortunate Heags closed since it severely limits students choices now

The closing of Angelo's was a sad day. Aside from great memories my family still eat there several times a year up to closing. Seldom does a month or two go by without one of my kids saying they wished Angie's was still open. While it will never be the same but would love to see Sobelman's give pizza a try at MU campus location.

Its my understanding MU has the recipes, could probably share them with Sobelmans if they wanted them.

Best item at Angelos was not on the menu...you had to ask for it...Lasagna Sticks....

I thought I had read when they originally announced that Sobelman's was going to take over the place that they intended to put Pizza on the menu, bit not right away. It could be that the burger thing is successful enough and they don't need to do the pizza thing.

By the way, the next time you go to Sobelman's, make sure you notice the orignal metal Angelo's sign in the hallway by the bathrooms.  It's the one that used to be on the East side of the building/

Blow's still has their tent at Summerfest where they serve lasagna sticks and they are glorious. We had a Super Bowl party one year and got 12 pizzas and 100 lasagna sticks delivered to our house, we were eating those things for days

I heard same thing on the pizza for Sobelman's and have been asking my son on regular basis if they serving the pizza. Hopefully one of these days it will happen. To date I have not been able to go into Sobelmans on campus because still upset Angelo's is gone. Some things are meant to live on.

Sobelman's has the recipies.  I got that word directly from the university administration some time back.  I had thought they would incorporate Angelo's product offering into the existing restaurant but so far have not.  It may be that Sobelman could choose to open a second location on campus at some point but I have not heard that directly.  Anyway, I'm always happy when a MU restaurant has 'local' ownership rather than being a national chain.

Goose, absolutely give Sobelman's a try.  Excellent addition to campus.  And know that on his recruiting trip, the boys (including DJO) took McKay there last summer.

For what it's worth, Angelo's was a shadow of its former self by the end. My daughter told us that it turned into a hangout for underage kids because they didn't check IDs quite as conscientously as the other campus spots.  And there wasn't  much pizza-eating going on.  Back in the day, I never drank beer at Angelo's unless it was to wash down my food.  No one went there just to drink.

The food was still good. It became a freshman bar after 10 pm. But it was absolutely still a dinner spot before that.

Actually funny story about the infamous underage bar Angelos became.

Me and my buddy (both of us 21) went there one night to drink because we were too lazy to go anywhere else (lived right at 16th and Kilbourn)...and the place got busted by the cops at about 11 pm. Everyone under 21 had to leave...me and my buddy were literally the only people left in the whole place...we stayed and had the place to ourselves...

If I recall Thoma's served free food Sunday mornings with your Bloody Marys.  I have sketchy recall of a pretty good pork chop there.

Can't recall the name of that bar nearby but do recall one being there. Stopped by Club Bagdad in Cudahy after the DePaul game and was disappointed that its oasis mural is no more.  My displeasure was somewhat offset by the $1 frosty mug of PBR.

I need someone to throw a vote the Midget's way since I burned mine too early on the Gym. Hate to see it get shut out.

Heagarty's was incredible.  I was a student 04-08 and double your dough night was always fun.  Friends with the bartenders and they to this day made the bet beer cheese soup I've ever had.  They also created a sandwich in 06 only available during finals week called "the final". It was a 1lb burger topped with 1/2 LB roast beef and smothered with an jous and cheese.  It was served with a basket of fries and another side.  If you finished everything in one sitting you got it free.  I wrecked that thing and the side of beer cheese soup and a pitcher of beer.  The bartender looked flabbergasted as a 5'9" 140 LB sopping wet kid destroyed that.  Great memories.

Gym was a good place to start the evening or as a palate cleanser when moving from Lenny's to a Well's Street eatery. Not really the sort of bar where you could hunker down and absorb the pathos of the cruel city or reflect on where one's mortal soul was headed.

Harp and Shamrock was our major hangout junior and senior years. The night before the MU-LSU game, my wife and I met a couple Marquette buddies there -- our first time in about 20 years. Glad it's still open, even if our old favorite bartender, Dan Fischer, no longer works there.

21st.  Its a parking lot now. Closed in 94?  Friends lived at the "North Pole" (purposely misnamed for a far point west - 2039 West Wells). They introduced me to the the Conway's/Thomas/Harp triangle.  My roommate's band played the first two.  Would have played the H & S, but couldn't figure out how to turn off "ring of fire" which played incessantly on the juke... and may still be going.

As a senior and then a recently graduated working guy I spend many a weekend evening up in that 'triangle'.  I guess I had tired of the old hangouts near campus and for whatever reason I was never much of a State Street guy.

Our two Harp & Shamrock favorites were "You Never Even Call Me By My Name" by David Allen Coe (as written by Steve Goodman) and the Elvis version of "My Way."

And yes, three decades later (as I discovered on a December visit), they are still on the juke there. Somehow, that's comforting to know.

Harp and Sham was great for those 6am sessions. Then go to Broken Yolk afterwards.

Do they still have George Webb's?

My nominee for best addition to the MU scene since 1986.

They are still around, but there's not one near campus any more.

Me and my Marquette peeps still sing The Perfect Country and Western song loud and proud when we hear it.

Yes.  There's one around the corner from the Hyatt downtown.

Back to the poll, was kind of surprised to see Hegarty's run away with it. I thought the Avalanche would have been closer.

Maybe part of it is due to Hegarty's longevity, since more people here got to experience its magic.

I think Hegarty's leads because it was the only oldtime bar still open during the 00's.  Most of the recent grads never got to experience the Lanche or Gym.  They only had one option to vote for (I don't count Angelos). I came in just as Lenny's closed, so I don't have any experience there, although I heard stories that rival the Lanche.

I am one of two to vote for Lenny's. My friend, the Lanche was that worn plantation house fallen on hard times, glimpses of her former glory straining against faded chintz, the yellowed chandeliers from Paris no longer illuminating splendid gentlemen in gray, settled uncomfortably on the veranda for the next mint julep while rehashing that field and Pickett's failure and the agony of what might have been, as the rustle of hooped skirts reverberates through darkened hallways hinting at the salacious, but the only life is in the Spanish Moss draped capriciously on gnarled cypress.

Lenny's was the tar paper shack out on the Bayou, beyond the critical gaze of the censuring eye, where the gentility slithered off at dusk to join the unwashed indulging earthier hungers, the sharp twang of the blues resonates off tin, the sorrow and pity of those words adding depth, richness, and meaning to the bourbon, there is loss but few regrets and certainly no remorse, where a man's soul is darker than the waters outside with desires more venomous than the cotton mouth, a place where dreams swirl in a monotonous languor bereft of hope.

Bernie and Melbas was the best when you wanted to mix it up with the "locals" after a few at OPs first.

What, no love for Grunt's?

Yes! My wife and her girlfriend from Mount Mary used to hold the foos ball table all night.  J.V. Grunts was a fun place.

I don't think I ever went to Grunts. It was kinda like the Kansas of the Marquette bar scene. Everyone flew over it going from the Gym to the Lanche.

We would stop in Grunts towards the end of the night, occasionally ordering food.  More than likely though it was because one of our Honorary Lighthouse Members liked to go in and "scrap."  Scrapping was walking up to a table of people, asking if they were done with their food and reaching for some at the same time.  Once he touched it, the people at the table didn't want their food anymore.....Thanks for coming Mac.

A favorite Chris Farley moved at Amigos, but it involved an appendage other than his hand.

I remember being at Grunt's a few times freshman year and, also, most vividly, senior year in HS visiting MU for the first time; that night clinched the deal.
