Marquette Athletics sent a survey today regarding the game-day experience. At the end of the survey, there is a section that allows you to provide text feedback regarding ways in which the game-day experience can improve. My thoughts immediately turned to the Big East rule regarding replays of controversial calls. I have previously contacted the Athletic department regarding this rule, and a spokesperson indicated that Marquette's hands are tied by the league. I realize that the league is trying to prevent in-game scrutiny of officials, but these same officials receive that same scrutiny when officiating in many other conferences, which allow replays.
If you agree with the view that PAYING season-ticketholders deserve to see replays that non-paying television viewers get, please provide that feedback. I realize that there is nothing that Marquette can unilaterally do, but consistent fan feedback may push Marquette pursue this issue in the offseason. It is in Marquette's best interest to enhance the fan experience, and this is a major flaw in the current experience. Marquette would only need to convince a handful of peers in order to change the league rule.
-
I used that comment section as well. They need to do something to freshen up the gameday experience. They've been playing the same songs, using the same in-game promos (kill the Big Noggin with fire), overall it hasn't changed much in the last 10 years.
While they're petitioning the league for more replays, they should also try and oust Cahill. The replays wouldn't be any sort of issue if the refs in this league weren't so bad.
-
I also commented on the replays as well as the in game experience. Rolling fuzzy dice, kiss cam, and appliance races on our relatively new and improved jumbotron??????
That is poor for any low major program, much less MU.
-
That comment section .. asked for "what ONE thing blah blah" .. So I only wrote one. I was hoping that later there would be a section for additional comments .. nope. Oops.
Overall, with pain and regret, my ratings were pretty low. I admit it, I am simply not immune to how well (poorly) the team is playing, which means I personally value my tickets much lower than I used to. I decided to miss over half the games this year, giving away a lot of tickets, in comparison to other years where my wife and I would miss maybe 1 game a year.
It's a combination of things .. bad on-court performance leads everything, but link that to no games against Louisville, UConn, Syracuse, Notre Dame, Pitt and the entertainment value plummets.
I can't imagine I'm alone .. and that's a big problem for MU, as there was a thread that figured they lost 1200-1500 season tickets from last year. They're in for another drop next year, and you gotta figure there's just zero market for new accounts.
-
I used the comments section to complain about replays as well.
-
I really think the music needs to be updated. Other than the opening tip, we need to break tradition and get some new time out music / bits. They really need to bag the "best student section in the county" it makes me cringe every time. I think the starting line ups could also even be enhanced a little more, make it more NBA like.
-
I asked for the rebirth of a Native American dancing in a Warriors uniform to increase the fan experience.

Could you elaborate a little? I personally thought we had a pretty NBA like system there already.

Carrying a very large tomahawk?
-
Obviously, this is completely tied to on-court performance, but I felt like I had to rate the game day experience the lowest since I've started taking these surveys.
Not exactly sure what can be done, but I went from watching an often Top 25 team playing other ranked powerhouses, in front of a packed stadium, where most games fans received a giveaway. The 6 or so games I went to this year were terrible.

Does the band still play Elvira?

Welp, writing that there would have just about as much impact as telling the MUAD they need to bring back Warrior, drop prices and get UL back on the schedule.

Marquette not winning the past two years is the major problem. The Big East is still strong.

I had no idea this rule existed. What is the justification? Not hurting the refs' feelings? Really?
Maybe Val can get on that, whenever she finally leaves Office Depot, that is.

It's not so much the refs in the league as it is NCAA refs in general. These guys work too many games in too many different cities. Until the NCAA imposes a limit for number of games worked per week the quality will be bad.

Didn't Cahill just get the National Championship game last year..

I don't know. If they didn't work as many games and we had to hire new guys that couldn't beat out the current guys, things might actually be worse.

Every single time they show the cheerleaders on tv, Mrs. Legs says almost the same thing (she refers back to the "80s ribbons").

The on court performance could have definitely been better this year but other than that I think the game day experience is just fine. Ill provide a little non biased outside perspective.
I brought my dad to his 1st Marquette game this year(the Gtown game), and he was blown away be the experience/environment. Granted it was an amazing game and we played well but that wasn't all. He is a pretty big college basketball fan and we'd been to a few different venues together for games.[BC, Boston Univ, Harvard, UConn, Fordham(vs Xavier), Umass, St Johns(vs ND at MSG) and Seton Hall(vs L'ville, and vs Syracuse)]. He thought that the experience at Marquette was "big time" and on a completely different level. He was amazed at the crowd, and in particular the student section that filled the upper deck. He honestly just couldn't say enough about the atmosphere, and every aspect of it.
I think that as Marquette fans we know we have a great program but we try to convince ourselves that we aren't as good as others because we are a smaller school or something. I know we have had 2 tough years but our program is top notch. We play in an NBA arena, we have a great tradition of success, we have a very passionate fanbase, and we put a ton of money into the program. Most schools in the country envy programs like ours and would kill to have the resources that we have at our fingertips. We'll be just fine.
-
Didn't Cahill just get the National Championship game last year..
No.
-
What does it take to attract a top-notch band? Without being too critical, I've always felt ours leaves something to be desired. Participation and enthusiasm seem to be lacking. Can we get someone to compose a few songs specific to MU (in addition to the flight song and alma mater) instead of just playing instrumental versions of pop songs? I've always felt the band is one of the unique game day aspects that separates college from the pros in a positive way.

The gtown game was the best game of the year by far. I'm really happy it was my nephews first college game. The energy that day was there from the tipoff. I thought the Nova game would have it too, but it just wasn't there.
I definitely think we need to upgrade our timeout game though. I just came back from the Bulls-Bucks game and they had awesome timeout gags that were original and entertaining. It really kept the crowd "rowdy" despite it being a blowout.

I think that would require offering a major in music which I'm pretty sure Marquette does not. Isn't that band kind of like a club at MU?

when they run the "jump around" song" during a game they are getting their arses kicked, you know they are struggling with a tired routine and in dire need to make some changes. they've been doing the same ole stuff on cue for way too long. the pizza thing, smile cam, kiss cam....what would it take to send a committee around to different games to get some new/fresh ideas. same with the bucks up until a few years ago anyway. i haven't been to a game in a couple of years, but some of their stuff is so old, the big O, jonny mac and lew alcindor could still predict what was coming next.
-
Submitted my survey. Not as dismayed by the results as some may be, probably because I feel we knew it was coming and can see the turnaround as well.
I did raise issues with the scoreboard, my seating location, and the student section. It irks me that I get a better experience watching at home than I do at the game, and the scoreboard is a big part of that. Replays, updated statistics, knowing which players are actually in the game, these are all things that are lost because they waste the fantastic scoreboard we have. That needs to be improved upon.
Can't speak for everyone, but my seats have moved back for three straight seasons now. Doesn't really feel like my loyalty is rewarded when they are pushing me further and further from the action. Also...did anyone else notice the Season Ticket Holder of the Game that got his tickets within the past 5 or so years? Was early in the year, but that really irritated me. STHOG should be going to someone who has at least 30 years as a STH. Again, not rewarding loyalty, instead just handing it out to any random schmuck. And while I'm sure it's tied to donations, it undermines loyalty, which should be just as important.
I also griped about the student section. I think the students that do come do a great job, but how long can you say "best student section in the country" when I can count the number of students in the upper bowl on one hand and the lower bowl isn't filled? When they move the arena further north because UWM won't give up the old Mecca and the Bucks don't want to take the Grand Avenue location due to parking, it will only lessen the number of students that show up. We've seen what having an arena far away from campus has done to Georgetown and DePaul, and while we may not go to that level we will approach it. Walking 1.2 miles from Marquette to the BC is clearly already too much for some students in the Wisconsin winters, and while they'll fill the new arena for the first year, what will happen when the newness wears off? It will be a 1.5-2.0 mile walk, through frigid temperatures and often unshoveled sidewalks, and it will deter them.
At best we'll have the "best student section in Milwaukee". I'd love to see Marquette chip $50-100 million into the new arena in hopes of getting it closer to campus rather than further away. I know, some will question the investment, but this investment is Marquette's most visible recruiting tool, not just for athletes but for students and for the University as a whole. When they build on 4th and McKinley, it won't be good for any of us, and definitely won't help the long-term student attendance numbers.
-
i agree with much of what brew stated above. my experiences have been very similar. we have already been with the "warriors" thru thick and THIN. now back to THIN. how are we rewarded? i've been moved back 3-4 times over the past re-seatings. yes i know-just send some more coin...i know my story is probably much like many of you here. i spent 9 years at mu-yes they have provided a nice lifestyle for me. now i'm still paying for my 2 kids who've completed their educations and are also on their way to what should be a couple of pretty good professional careers also. but unless i give above and beyond all that, i get penalized to the point where, yes, the experience is as good or better right at home on my 60 incher, no freeway bgack ups, parking issues or waiting in lines. i just turn up the surround and wait for jump around and...go warriors!!

Marquette not winning the past two years is the major problem. The Big East is still strong.
The Big East is still strong if not somewhat diminished, but Marquette lost its two biggest travel rivals in Louisville and Notre Dame. And there were always dog fights with Cuse, Pitt and Uconn. Who didn't like running Huggy, with his velour running suit, up and down the flag pole?
-
Marquette not winning the past two years is the major problem. The Big East is still strong.
It's the best situation for them right now, it doesn't come close to the old league. That was the best hoops conference ever assembled.
-
One of MU's biggest (if not the biggest) problem is expectations.
The OBE years were beyond fantastic. Tons of great top 25 action, great rivalries, and MU was battling for the top of the league every year on ESPN. We were at the top of the mountain -- and frankly, MU could spend a ton of $$ because it could charge a premium and get eager donors.
Now, not. With the exception of the arena .. nearly everything about the program has been downgraded. (Yeah, (minority) would say we upgraded our coach.) So the value is way down, and the prices are still premium. That's gonna create discontent on multiple levels.
-
What do you guys think of the PA announcer? I know when the back up steps in there is a big decline.
Also, the pre starting up video is real weak this year IMO, this needs to improve next year.
-
I think the PA guy is fine.
.. That being said .. I went to my first MKE Wave game a few days ago. Wow, do they know how to entertain. While way, way different, the basic premise is the same: It's an arena, there's a sporting event going on. After that, it's all about entertaining the crowd, and the PA guy is the emcee of the event. MU could learn some stuff from there.
-
Could you elaborate a little? I personally thought we had a pretty NBA like system there already.
True I guess you are right now that you think of it. I'd more say I'd recommend a better intro video with music and louder PA. The best student section in the country is nowhere near NBA. But your right overall its not bad, and on par/better than other big east venues I have been to.
-
You people don't realize how many people throw crapfits when some variation of 'Streets Have No Name' isn't played.
-
You people don't realize how many people throw crapfits when some variation of 'Streets Have No Name' isn't played.
Yeah your right, but I just think it needs to be updated to something new and different. Or still use some of it somehow.
-

Number of top 25 teams on the home schedule since the beginning of the Buzz era:
2008-09: 5 (Nova, WVU, Georgetown, Syracuse, UConn)
2009-10: 3 (Georgetown, Pitt, Nova)
2010-11: 3 (ND, Syracuse, WVU)
2011-12: 2 (Louisville, Georgetown)
2012-13: 4 (Georgetown, Pitt, Syracuse, ND)
2013-14: 3 (OSU, Nova, Creighton)
2014-15: 3 (UW, Nova, Butler)
So really the last two years have seen no difference in terms of high quality teams in the BC. The problem is that we haven't been good in any of those games (0-6). Really once Marquette gets better on the floor, I think a lot of the concerns about the quality of opponents will change.
-
Come on. Yes, I said Top 25 .. but Louisville, UConn, Syracuse, Pitt, WVU, ND .. regardless of whether they were top 25 or top 50 .. they were great opponents. And yeah, go on, find out that WVU, ND, SU were out of the top 50 at points, go ahead do that.
-

Yeah, but you know as well as anyone that we were stuck and got left in a much better position than others.
We got hung out to dry due to football. Even football schools got left out to dry. Tell me, would you rather Cincy right now?
-
Lots of good comments. Someone needs to copy and share with the AD. I doubt he reads Scoop. From my point of view, these comments yield better insight than the survey.
Game day experience is critical to the long term success. There are a lot of non-alums (like me) who have been rabid fans for many years. I have a rather large group of friends who are in the same boat -- aging and not being renewed by new fans. In order to keep the joint filled, we need to be the best game in town and draw from the community. Keep the seats full even if it means scouring the local grade and high schools and send buses when you know it isn't going to be a sell out. These kids are the future fans, student and in some cases players.
Every time out should be electric and unanticipated. Do the stodgy recognition programs at half time when we get to enjoy a $6, not $8 beer.
-

You seem upset that a key piece of your discontent platform with the program has been refuted.
-
Video replays are an easy way for the Big East to differentiate itself from the other big conferences. We should be a little more edgy and grab people's attention with stuff like that. Almost all the teams play in an arena with great video capabilities, and we should take advantage of that. Conflict and controversy help build rivalries, which is something else the conference desperately needs. If the refs can't take, get new refs, they can't get much worse.
-

You said three things. "Tons of great top 25 action, great rivalries, and MU was battling for the top of the league every year on ESPN."
The first was addressed by my initial post.
The second has been hampered, but some of the rivalries are still in tact while others will have to develop.
The third, and I don't know why it matters what network the games are on if you are attending the games in person, is the main reason IMO. The games against Butler and Nova for instance would have been a lot more fun if both teams were ranked.
-

No, I'm not joking. You can do that.

Do away with the "Dice" promotion. Its horrible.
Season "Schmuck of the Game" is senseless. It adds zero to the experience and causes general indifference for most.

Could not agree more on both. No more guess the lyrics game that is new this year it's pointless as well. Also, I think the smile cam is getting very old.

The dice game is bad, but I love the Season-Ticket-Holder of the game promotion.
-

It's a great situation. Football makes the money. It was a fun run but I like the Big East. I like the likeminded schools and being on FS1. Notre Dame should be playing Marquette anyways in the non-league as in years past.
-

Xavier, Butler, Villanova, Georgetown, PC are great teams, problem is that things suck the past two years is Marquette is not winning!!!
-
We also played Rutgers and South Florida too, but they were cupcakes (at best) in the Old Big East. Seton Hall, DePaul and Providence were also bottom-dwellers in the old conference, but they are now very competitive in conference play.
It comes down to wins. Nothing more. You win, more fans come. Our schedule could have featured Duke, North Carolina, Indiana, Syracuse, UCLA, Arizona and a boat-load of other top programs, but the decreasing attendance (from MU fans/alumni) over the course of the season would have continued.
With the rivalries that are being built in the New Big East, the competitive games will be there. It's up to Wojo and the team to win those games and for us fans to support the team during down times (like this year).

Agree. Just filled out survey and used the entire allotment of characters in the comments section as a result of reading through this thread prior to filling it out.

I thought they should try to schedule some Friday night or Saturday night games next season.
-
I did not read all of these posts, so I do not know what others are saying. I posted that I wanted them to announce the opposing team's heights.
-
Whether you think MU"s game day presentation is good or bad, the fact is, not much has changed since TC revamped it in the early 2000s. Imagine if we hired Quinn Snyder instead of TC.
I think Crean did a lot of good for the gameday experience but we shouldn't be stuck with a program that is 10+ years old.
-

Very unlikely. FoxS1's focus is Saturday late morning/early afternoon. Plus both the Bucks and the Admirals have priority. The only exception might be a night game against Bucky and what will almost certainly be an evening slot on New Year's Eve where showcasing HE might be part of the game plan.
-
On the replay topic, I was at the DePaul creighon game last night and have been to Allstate before for MU but didn't notice that they show the live FS1 feed on the jumbotron during the game, complete with being able to see many of the replays. Maybe they usually cut them out, but at least last night I saw many replays.
-
.. Admittedly, there've been a handful of times that they DID show a replay of a controversial play at the Bradley Center this year. My immediate reaction: Did they really just replay that? -- They'd only do it ONCE, though.
-

So Lens, you'd change what? I'm told that the students today absolutely want the pregame music traditions to remain as is. Now the in game promos could certainly use some improvement. That damn dice roll is horrible. And the fact that it seemingly always ends in a tie is even worse.

Especially with the "prethrow tie breaker". Come on, Qdoba. Forget the rock paper scissors game the crowd didn't get to see and just pay for burritos for two rows. As though the extra 14 burritos will bankrupt them.

I went to the Marquette-DePaul game at the Allstate on NYE this year. Remember that late charge against Luke Fischer? They yanked the FS1 feed as they started to replay it.

So Lens, you'd change what? I'm told that the students today absolutely want the pregame music traditions to remain as is. Now the in game promos could certainly use some improvement. That damn dice roll is horrible. And the fact that it seemingly always ends in a tie is even worse.
The presentation needs a revamp. Get a new light show, maybe some new material on the scoreboard during time outs, new music, get rid of the big heads, just a new look all around. It's stale as hell!
God knows I hate our mascot, but if they're going to spend money on the dumb thing then have it do something other than deliver pizzas and stand in the corner.
There is a lot that can be revamped without breaking the bank.
By the way, here's hoping Wojo recognizes that the way we have done senior day in the past is awful. That needs a revamp as well.

Notably, the band played 'You Suck' (or whatever it's called) at the Pep Rally. Upperclassmen were totally pumped (although there was nobody to chant at) and Frosh had no idea why the crowd was all excited. I must admit that my son takes great pride in ignoring the famous Larry email and counting himself among those loudly gesturing directly toward the Presidential skybox that fateful day (DePaul game?) after which it was forever banned by the powers that be.
Ya know what? The students were ahead of their time with that evaluation. ;D

Does anyone know why the "Big Heads" get smaller every year? They were basically just the size of real heads this year.
-
Never got a survey. How are they supposed to get to me? I have season tickets since 74 and have never gotten a t-shirt, pizza or anything in my row. The price of tickets per game went down but the total price stayed amount the same because of added costs. You can't keep on reducing the number of home games and increasing the total price of tickets. We have to have a chance in most games. I understand this is a throw away year. We have all the nice facilities, conference ties and other recruiting tools. We have to be able year after year get some good players.
-
The cost of tickets for single game tickets are by three price points. Season-tickets are paid by the lowest price point.

Excellent point on Senior Day. How in the world does MU not do that before the game? Been way too many Senior Day's in the last 15 years after they'd lost a heartbreaker, which killed it, a lot of times for guys who you had a decent idea were going to be in the NBA the next year.

Played out like the uniforms. Time to switch it up.
Perfect time now since we suck.

My first year in the department I was responsible for much of this stuff. The animated videos, the lights, the music, mascot, etc. Impossible to please everyone. The old bluehairs would say it is too loud, or the band should play more, while others wanted lasers and God knows what.
Crean was very involved in the game day atmosphere....I had left by then, but friends that remained in the department would tell me how overly involved he was. No thanks...just coach and let the game day people do their jobs.

I use Gmail, and while all of my official MU ticket correspondence hits my main inbox, I found the survey on the "Promotions" tab. I would check any folders you have for junk mail or spam.

They've been doing it after the game for at least 25 years if not longer.
The answer is simple, they wanted to make it special and not totally scripted. Also, they know how many "fans" don't get in their seats in time anyway so moving it before the game when so many people are still milling around, having their duds and cabernet is equally problematic. The other reason is timing. When you have it before the game, it is tightly scripted because of TV, so you are limited in your options.
I had one coach tell me at the time they also wanted to avoid the over amping of the athlete. In other schools he was at the kids would do the pregrame ceremony, became way too emotional, to hyped up and were a basket case for the first half of the game.

That's funny, I could have spoken to your class this year. We got the invite, but had to decline. I spoke at the class probably 20 years ago.

That's a damn shame, Chicos. Could've treated you to some Real Chili afterwards.

I would have humbly accepted it. Took my son to a Packers game a few years ago when he was probably 12...we went up to Michael's for breakfast, but didn't do Real Chili. My wife makes it here at home at times, but the real mccoy is missed.

The Athletic Department posted some pictures on Facebook of various National Marquette Day parties around the country. The one from San Diego showed a chalkboard of the special menu the restaurant put together. It included "Marquette Chili" for $10.99.
Eleven dollars -- for fake Real Chili. LOL California.

That is funny. I missed it this year....my son and I were on the road driving to the Kings Sharks outdoor game at Levi's Stadium that day. I was tempted to have him pull off the road and find a bar in Pismo or something to catch the day.

No promotions at all this year (bobble heads, trading cards, media guide, pizza coupons) but we did get a plastic cup!
What a joke for what we pay! Saw Providence fans got bob rheas!

Tofu and quinoa are expensive.

Wife made some real chili on Sunday night...it was frigid out here at 62 degrees and the chance of rain. She does a little California flair and adds slices of avocado on top of the noodles, chili, cheese and sour cream. A nice touch.

Are the noodles made outta black beans or zucchini?

If I read the gamer e-mail correctly today, looks like it's been moved to pre-game on Saturday.
