Title: I Love Game Day
Post by: StillAWarrior on February 08, 2022, 09:29:30 AM
It is so nice to be this excited for Game Day again. The most disheartening thing to me was the time I actually forgot MU had a game and realized the following day that I had missed it...and didn't really care. That kind of apathy -- from a pretty obsessive fan -- was the surest sign of the damage that was being done to the program.

As an added bonus, my wife is just as excited about Game Day as I am these days. That hasn't been the case for a long time. She really likes watching this team play.

Same here. She had no interest in or understanding of bball at all and now is a big Marquette fan. She has gone from quietly watching games to shouting "Why did he do that?" after a MU player makes a dumb mistake.

I 100% agree. Not only am I jacked up on game day, but my grown sons are equally jacked up.What a difference in a very short period of time. Playing golf with fellow scooper today and looking forward to the golf and talking MU basketball.

Several times in the last couple weeks my wife has said, "Marquette game is tonight, right?" I hardly recognize her.

Maybe it is just my philosophy and personality, but my enthusiasm never wavered.  Then again, I rarely take losing personally and it drives my wife crazy that I can tell how IU did by her attitude, but she can't tell how  MU did by my attitude.  She knows it is gameday by the clothes I wear.   She is too busy obsessing over the Hoosiers to ask when MU plays.   Other than who is going to get which tv.

But it is gameday and I am double clad in MU swag; polo and quarterzip.

Well, for the past 7 years mostly, when I was watching games on TV my wife was in the same room, because I was pretty quiet because of what usually happened.    Now, when I watch on tv she must leave the room.   This is a good sign that Marquette is back!  Lol

So how were things in your house after our last visit to Assembly Hall some years back?

That’s hilarious tower.  I do the same thing.  I have to have at least one MU clothing item on during game day.  In a weird sort of way I feel like I’m doing my part.

She was impressed that I correctly predicted the flow of the game and the approximate margin of IU victory.

The funny thing was, I didn't realize my enthusiasm had wavered. I watched all the games. Unlike you, I got pissed at how they were playing and my wife definitely could tell by my attitude how MU did (although she generally watched something in the other room). Then I forgot about a game. I realized the next day that I missed it and my initial thought was, "That's never happened before. I completely forgot Marquette was playing." My next thought was, "Oh well..." I was honestly really surprised 1) that I forgot about the game, and 2) that I wasn't bothered.

She is too busy obsessing over the Hoosiers to ask when MU plays.

As the parent of a Purdue student, I feel compelled to say, "IU Sucks!"

She grew up in Indiana in the 80's in love with Steve Alford and his perfect hair.   Our first date had the NCAA championship on in the background and she showed an impressive understanding of the game.  30+ years later....

Yeah, I've had to pretend to hate Purdue, though I honestly don't care.

Marquette socks on gameday for me. I know it has no impact on the game...but I also always wear my Marquette sock on gameday

At home: One of three pullovers for gametime. And the flag outside has to be 100% untangled (of course it has no affect on the game...)

For in-person or specific celebratory Marquette days, I have to wear the WLAX pancreatic cancer socks (thanks Joe True) and "Marquette" Air Jordan 1 Mids (usually NMD and for this year, LovellStrong game).

I was coming to the game from a work event for the home game vs. PC. I forgot to pack extra MU clothes so I went in neutral colors. I continued to wear neutral colors during future games since it was the first win in awhile, and we ripped off 7 straight. We lost to PC and beat Nova since then. Is the good luck charm broken? Can I go back to wearing MU clothes? Or do I continue with the neutral clothes until we fail to cover?

So many tough, meaningless decisions to make!

I also wear Marquette socks on game day. I don’t wash them if they win and wear the same pair the next game. That last win streak was testing my resolve.

My mother who is 86 is having health issues so I am at her place a lot these days. We started watching the games together.  She is now watching on her own and says “I love that Shaka guy!”  Most days she asks me if Marquette plays today.

The last part makes me smile. Glad you're able to share those moments with her

Usually would have a MU sweatshirt on at the office. Work from home has me in my old Lazar or DJO jersey on game days

Back when I was a student I had a very specific order to my game day attire. That’s when we just didn’t lose at the Bradley Center. (Was home for the Vandy game so missed that debacle Freshman Year)

Navy blue Marquette DJO jersey with a plain blue T-shirt underneath, a gold Marquette warmup long sleeve over that which I would take off 5 minutes before tipoff, gold shorts, blue and gold striped knee high socks, Blue and Gold Nikes.

Have long since abandoned that OCD.

I’m not sure I’ve gone an entire day without MU gear on in the past 2.5 years. Game day or offseason, doesn’t matter.

Today as I walked to grab lunch:
MU shooting shirt, MU warm up pants, MU shoes, MU shorts under the pants, MU jordan parka, and MU winter headband

Currently back in the home office, so down to boxers and no MU gear, but it’ll be back on later

Not a gold quarterzip.? If so, must have travelled far and wide to find one.

I don't like the gold outerwear.  I have a couple old gold (now yellow) t-shirts.  Wear them under the quarter zips for contrast.

The other day, I thought I wasn't wearing any spirit gear except for an MU tee, but Glow pointed out that I also had an MU mask and an MU lanyard.

 I don't even notice anymore.

I have absolutely no superstitions. I usually wear something that says Marquette on game day, but I also wear lots of MU stuff on non-game days.

My wife and I are thoroughly enjoying this season ... but I'll still occasionally yell at the TV, usually when there's a bad turnover or an inability to grab a rebound. Sends my poor dog scurrying out of the room! She HATES game day!

I think the biggest difference between this year and the last few years is I’ll move things around to watch Marquette this season.

Last year, if I missed the game or had something else to do, so be it. Didn’t particularly care.

Just got my monthly Microsoft report for January that calls out the rare days that I don’t spend “significant time working outside of normal hours”. Bumped it up against MU’s schedule and discovered MU games are the only thing that help balance my work/life schedule.

Yeah, about the only thing I yell at my TV this year is the occasional, "Will somebody please grab the damn ball?!!"

I feel like a bear emerging from hibernation. The Wojo-era apathy set in almost from the get-go. And as time went on, I started to think, getting into my 30s, that perhaps it was just a natural progression away from caring about my college's basketball team. SO GLAD I WAS WRONG.

Just because I am NOT superstitious does not mean that it is OK for you to go back to wearing "MU clothes". You now have a sacred duty to wear neutral colors on game day. I'm not superstitious. I'm not!

When the missed rebound leads directly to an opponent's 3, as happened at Providence ... arrrgh!
