Next 6 games huge for this team and trajectory of the program.
3 - 3 would be an overachieving miracle IMHO.
-
I predict 2 home wins.
With a lot of luck, steal one away at UCONN.
But probably 2-4.
Nova is only .500 in Milwaukee since 2007...
-
I went with 3-3. With two road games facing opponents out for blood after losing their first matchup with us plus Nova in Philly, it's a tall order for our guys to win one of those but a Providence road win is not out of the question. Of course neither are the other two games, but I think we lose them. I'm really hoping for a W in our home game vs. Nova. I think we beat Xavier. UCONN is one BE team I simply cannot get a feel for. The other such team is St. Johns, and yeah- I know. they are not in the next six.
-
I’m stuck between 1-5 and 2-4, so I went with 1-5.
MU will be somewhere between slight and solid underdogs in all of these games. Winning on the road is tough against anyone, but especially against teams in the top half of the league.
I expect MU to play teams tough, but I’m not very confident in their ability to close out close games on the road.
If you told me now they could go 2-4 without playing the games I would take it. 3-3 would be a significant accomplishment and put them in great position to pin down an NCAA bid by winning some games they should win down the stretch.
-
3 - 3 would be an overachieving miracle IMHO.
Marquette will be in a good place going 3-3 in the next 6 games, but I’d hardly call that an “overachieving miracle.” We have a big time coach now who is proven to be successful at this level and I’m confident we’ll be better the second time we face these teams.
There doesn’t necessarily need to be that inevitable head scratching clunker that happened every other game in conference the past 7 years. Consistency over a long stretch of games is actually possible at this level. I know that’s become hard to believe as an MU fan.
-
2-4 I feel that would be a solid/good outcome, despite greedily wanting more wins, it's a tough slate of games with only 2 of the 6 at home. I think we beat Xavier at home, and Providence on the road. Tight games in the other 4 but not sure I can see us winning on the road at UConn or Seton Hall.
-
I said 6-0 ... because somebody had to!
-

I am expecting a head-scratching clunker among the next 6 games and I look forward to this board imploding... lol.
2-4 among the next 6 gets us to 6-7 in the league. After that, you win 5 of the next 7 against the bottom of the league to bring us 11-9 overall - we've all gotta be ecstatic about that.

For the first time in a long time, I am only looking one game at time. The upcoming schedule is very tough and knowing how guys respond to good or bad games is tough to predict. This team has shown they are tough mentally and they are going to need all of that toughness over next three weeks. They are playing well, look confident and I hope that carries over during this stretch.

Unless they reschedule SJU, MU will only play 19 conference games this season.

Good point. Haven't read much about that - are they planning on rescheduling? Or only if necessary?

Scoop
In addition to taking it one game at time, I am nervous for the first time in nearly a decade. The boys have their tourney hopes at their fingertips and we will see if they deliver the goods. My gut tells me that they will continue to surprise on the upside, what that means over next six is up for debate. That said, 2-4 would be disappointing to me.
-
Were projected to win 1.83 games over this stretch. so the correct answer is 2-4.

Beat Nova on Wednesday. Have an oddly good feeling about it like I did the Illini game.

To repeat what I said in another thread- I hope the game is not rescheduled. St. Johns at Carnesecca is scary. If they beat us and end up maybe #9 in the BE, it's not a good look. I hope that we get out of a rescheduled game and play a team like VCU in Milwaukee in lieu of St. Johns in NY.

And risk our big men transferring to VCU and Richmond?
In all seriousness, are any other BE teams adding non-conference games? This far into the season and with a few teams with multiple games to make up, I have to think decisions need to be made soon. MU has actually been pretty lucky in postponed games so far.
-
Luck or by being careful, I am thankful MU has not had to cancel any games on account of themselves.

Yea, I meant more from other teams. I think Shaka and the team should be applauded for having everyone vaccinated and boosted so quickly.

They are also fully vaccinated which means they are tested only when symptomatic.

The fun thing about being fans is that we don't have to take it one game at a time. If we take it 3 or 5 or 7 games at a time, it doesn't affect anything! But I do get what you are saying.

Thankfully, such projections mean squat.
I KNEW it was you! I knew it!
If I've gotta be serious, I'll go with at least 3-3. I'd be more surprised by 1-5 than I would by 5-1. I'm really liking this team's chutzpah!
-
I'm pretty set on the fact that it will be 2-4. And im guessing 2 of the 4 losses will be competitive if not completely down to the wire. I think at Nova and one of the other road games we mostly get crushed.
I'd actually be pretty pretty surprised both ways(worse than 2-4 or better).
Would absolutely love getting 3 wins though. Man that would put us in good shape.
-

My only reason for going one at time is because a lot has changed in two weeks. I would not be surprised if they are in better position a week from now. I said I would be disappointed at 2-4.

Reasonable, Goose. Thanks.
For me, the level of "disappointment" in losses will directly correlate with how a loss occurred. If the team plays extremely hard, executes, plays good D, etc, but the ball's just not going through the hoop ... and/or if the other team is just making shots out their rumps, I will be much less disappointed than if we give one away via turnovers, missed bunnies, silly decisions, etc.
So I guess in that respect I'll be taking 'em one at a time, too.
-
Likely underdogs in every game, 161 votes and ZERO 0-6 votes.
Who woulda thought MUScoop is such an optimistic place.
Also, over 80% voted 2 or more wins.
I went with 2-4, and Id be pretty happy with that. If MU wins on Wednesday I’d say 3-3 is a good possibility but still wouldn’t be disappointed with 2-4.
I think 4 or more wins is a pipe dream, but pressure can either bust pipes or build diamonds.
That would probably mean a top 3/4 conference finish and pretty solid tourney seed.
Fwiw I do not think this Wednesdays game is impossible, I actually don’t have a terrible feeling about it. If I had to rank from most to least difficult based on gut feeling I’d go with
@ UConn
@ Nova
@ Providence
V Nova
V Xavier
@ SH
I really like the idea of sweeping SH this season. They have a home and home on Saturday and Monday versus StJ, who runs like hell, and then get MU Wednesday at 4PM.
Xavier on a Sunday afternoon should hopefully draw a really nice crowd (packers play Sat night so hopefully they win and fans come fired up on sunday).
Wednesday night 9PM v Nova and they get UConn on Saturday at 11AM, maybe a bit of a trap game for most teams but it’s Jay Wright.
Don’t like playing at the Dunkin Donuts Center at 330 on a Saturday and Cooley will have his dudes fired up, but they have cancellations and make up games so that might help MU.
No logic behind calling @UConn tougher than @Nova, but that game is sandwiched between road games at Villanova and at Xavier for them so they will likely want a win badly.
-
Interesting post Dr. V. You surprised me by listing SH at the bottom of your list but I get your logic. Teams that have to sandwich in make up games may be at a disadvantage and yeah, St. Johns will definitely make them run.
-
Likely underdogs in every game
How many times have we been underdogs to this point? What is our record in those games?
I am NOT being snarky. I don't track this kind of stuff and I'm legit curious after you and others have pointed this out in regards to the stretch that began Saturday.
Is it possible our team is better than kenpom and torvik and NET and whateverwhatever.com say we are?
-
I went 3-3. I agree with Dr. V's assessment of the SHU game (that's a lot of up-tempo games in a 5-day stretch), think we catch Xavier at home (we almost caught them in Cincy before they took over late), and think we're a matchup problem for Providence.
-
I went 3-3 but don't hate it if we are at 2-4.
Agree with brew that we seem to be a bad matchup for Providence and we hung with X on the road--that's 2 of the wins.
Honestly don't know where the third comes from--heart says we steal one from Nova tomorrow, but my mind says it's probably SHU.
-
Anything 2-4 or better we're in great shape. Winning the last three was enormous, and frankly necessary.
-
It’s wild. Before this 7 game stretch started I hoped for 2-5.
Now with the SHU win I can see 2-4 happening.
If you would have told me at the start of the 7 game gauntlet that 3-4 was possible I woulda shat happy bricks

Best part about the above is that I have my 2 “easiest” rated games coming up next.
As I said I hope the home crowd caries Marquette on Sunday, I think the team needs every bit of it as X isn’t a great matchup for us and is tough as nails.
Then I like what goes into that SH game on the road and I like the idea of sweeping them this season.
Odds are both won’t happen but lets get Sunday and see what happens in Joisey

Hello friend

Well, they've already met my mark. Now if they don't double it I'm going to be depressed.
The Hall will be a tough out at the Rock. I would LOVE a win @PC . Beat VU again at home and go to Hartford on a huge roll. This year has already exceeded my expectations, but God, I love gravy.

Here for the gravy as well. Think we could have a big week here. Aiken may be out and I just think we match well against Providence
-
Still haven’t reached my optimistic pick of 3-3. Now I’m hoping that I underestimated these guys.

IF you are right and Marquette wins both road games this week we are no longer talking about making the dance.
We are no longer talking about BECOY because coach smart would have almost damn near clinched it.
We are then talking about BE titles and protected top 5 seeds. We are talking about a top 15 team in all the land.
-

Might need our boys to read the SHU board.
Few of their posters think we basically suck and are a total fluke. Justin and Daryl being our only good players

Somebody has to win the BE and be a top five seed, why not the good guys? We have a tough stretch and need to stay sharp, and let’s see what happens. I would not be surprised if we were in a better position in three weeks.

Assuming the St Johns game is not made up, I’d say our magic number is 4 to lock up a bid. I find it hard to believe we’d be left out at 18-13 (10-9), assuming a first round exit in BET.
That’s a 4-7 finish even with this good run. Many on here predicted 2-4 in this stretch. That would have put much more pressure on a really strong finish.

Yeah, 18 is for real a mortal lock now with the wins we have. If we don't get there considering we the wins we have that would be a major melt down considering we have 5 games left against the bottom feeders.
I think the more meaningful conversation now is seed. I don't know if Brew,'s magic machine can do all the permutations, but it seems like a 21-10 record should be about a 6 seed which would be great to get out of the 7-10 range which makes the second weekend much tricker. We've already beaten a few teams of 3-seed caliber.
-
That said, as of right now four I-A games in a row coming up - out of the fire into the frying pan.
But about an 80% chance we win at least one. 40% chance we win 2 or more. 1.2% chance we win em all...
-
Not sure where to ask this, so I'll put it here.
Why do sites list us in 5th, when we are a game out of first, but Creighton and Uconn are listed ahead, when they are 1.5 out of first?

Those sites are wrong. We all have the same win %. But we have played 3 more games, its supposed to go to us.

I haven't rescrubbed yet, but I think (including a BET loss) 18-13 gives us a chance, 19-12 makes us a lock, 20+ gets us into single digit seed territory. 21-10 would probably have us in the 6-8 range depending on what other teams do. FWIW, Dave Ommen has us as a 4-seed as of this morning. He's typically one of the best in the business. I'm not sure I agree with him yet, but we are starting to fly pretty high.
-
Brew, recalibrate down to 30. Unlikely SJU is rescheduled. 31 means first round Big East Loss.
-
I was in 3-3 camp when the poll came out.
Hoping we can out perform that.

My original post factored in a first-round BET loss:
I haven't rescrubbed yet, but I think (including a BET loss) 18-13 gives us a chance, 19-12 makes us a lock, 20+ gets us into single digit seed territory.
I know some are optimistic about 18-13 being enough, but consider what that means. Only 4 wins in our last 10, which means taking at least one bad loss, most likely DePaul or Butler on the road. And 10-9 in the Big East probably puts us into 6th or 7th place in the league, so assuming a BET first round loss means losing on Wednesday to either Georgetown or Butler.
We're in good shape now, but I'm not sure we're in good enough shape that 18-13 with two bad losses and no more quality wins added makes us a lock even for Dayton. 19 wins is a better target, even if one is just avoiding a bad loss by beating Georgetown or Butler on Wednesday.
-

Agreed. But keep playing as well as the last 6 games, and we don't even have to worry about it :)

Agreed. But keep playing as well as the last 6 games, and we don't even have to worry about it :)
Keep playing as well as we have been and we'll be looking at a protected seed and griping about how we can't play in our home arena.

Creighton and UCONN both have the head to head tiebreaker on us.
Is that right, that the tiebreaker when winning percentage is the same goes immediately to head to head matchups? That does seem to be what's going on with MU listed in 5th.
I would've guess that the number of wins would come first as a tiebreaker following winning percentage, putting MU ahead of both UConn and Creighton. I guess you can see it as sort of penalizing teams that don't play as many games, but you might just as easily want to acknowledge when a team can maintain the same percentage over more games.
Oh, well. Just keep winning!
-
I'm not sure who's right or wrong, BE has us listed 3rd.

I'm not sure who's right or wrong, BE has us listed 3rd.
https://www.bigeast.com/standings.aspx?path=mbball
We're likely listed third due to win quantity, but if those were the season ending standings, we'd be the 5-seed in the BET. Because of the tie in winning percentage, it would go to the "mini-conference" looking at record in games between those three teams. Both UConn and Creighton are 1-0 while we are 0-2, so we're out. They haven't played, so the next tiebreaker is win over the highest ranked team in league. Neither has beaten Providence (too bad we're eliminated before it gets to that tiebreaker) so the highest win would be Creighton's win at home over #2 Villanova. So standings would be...
1) Providence
2) Villanova
3) Creighton
4) UConn
5) Marquette
We would play UConn on Thursday as it stands.
-
Thanks for the details, Brew. Interesting that most listings I've seen has MU 5th, but, as Rocky points out, on the Big East website, MU is 3rd. You'd think that would be the ONE platform that would apply the seeding criteria for their own conference to the standings calculations!
-
Agree with Brew. 19 wins pre-BET and we should be a lock. 18 is very dicey. Torvik projects an 18-12 MU team as one of the last four teams in prior to the BET. It would be close.
Get to 19-11 (11-8) and we jump up thirteen places to the best 9 seed. 20-10 (12-7) moves us to the top 7 seed.
The good news is that with 5 games left against Butler, DePaul, SJU and Georgetown, we shouldn't have trouble getting to 19 wins unless we fall off a cliff.
-
I forgot about getting 18 or 19 wins about nine months ago. Take care of business and there is no anxiety come BE tourney. If they do not win 20+ I will be disappointed.

Congrats to the 23 voters who were correct!
No complaints with this 6 game record. We're on the right path and trajectory.
