Amusing. We're 153! Almost as good as our basketball ranking!

Seriously.....?

well, just one pov, but it sure ain't a good look-

"PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 21, 2021 — Prospective college students who want to make sure that their free expression will be protected should consider Claremont McKenna College or the University of Chicago. But if they land at DePauw University or Marquette University, their free speech rights are at serious risk.

That’s because DePauw and Marquette rank dead last in the 2021 College Free Speech Rankings."

for a prominent university, this is horrible!!  where's the "be the difference" thingy?  my parents, who've given generously for 50 years, just told them "no thank you".  when asked why, my mom mentioned a few things and the caller said, yeah, we get that a lot.  gotta feel sorry for the callers.  MU could give them something a little better

umm...room for improvement

I'm just going to say that when I was a part of Marquette College Dems this was going both ways. There was plenty that we wanted to do that was stifled. So this might not be the vindication that conservative posters are looking for regarding their fears about MU.

At the end of the day it's a Catholic school so that in itself was always going to set us back with free speech.

I can say with 100% certainty that I did not look up college freedom of speech rankings when I was 16-18 years old.

Yup, party rankings were likely more important. lol

Hmmm, reading the comments. Claremount-Mckenna (#1) seems way less open and free-speech oriented, than MU.

Did anyone actually look at the methodology before hand-wringing?

I mean, there's really only one post of handwringing. Maybe two posts of half handwringing. I think most recognize that it is an arbitrary ranking.

To be fair, I think FIRE has a decent mission that serves a legit purpose. But these rankings are silly.

I saw it was put on by Real Clear Politics and didn't bother with the methodology

Just having to rank schools is commentary enough on the times we live in when it comes to debating issues freely in an academic setting.

Quote
Tolerance for Liberal Speakers (16%)
Tolerance for Conservative Speakers (16%)

Ah yes, tolerance for the 2 ideas.

looking at the "rankings" I find the methodology dubious at best. There is no way MU or nearly any school should be below an Ivy or NESCAC. However, those schools are overwhelmingly liberal (I saw a poll that 95% of incoming Harvard freshmen voted for Biden) so any complaints about "free speech" would be from a very small minority of students who are legitimately shut down. At MU, you have right wingers who are conditioned to complain about being stifled by "liberal" professors. Meanwhile, you have left wing students who feel stifled due to MU's Catholic beliefs, especially on issues like abortion.

I did see an article from a few years ago saying MU was being penalized in these rankings for the McAdams issue too. That's long dead and buried.
