Von Trier circling drain..
« on: July 22, 2009, 09:46:34 PM »
OUCH!

If I remember correctly, Von Trier was the first bar I ever drank underage.  Eventually, we became regulars, and they never carded us, often going 3-4x/week.  Certainly not your typical college bar.  But that popcorn and Hacker Pschorr weisse sure was tasty.

Von Trier Tavern faces foreclosure suit, sale
By Tom Daykin of the Journal Sentinel
July 17, 2009

Von Trier Tavern, a popular east side tavern and beer garden, is facing a foreclosure suit and is in the process of being sold, the owner said Friday.

The suit, filed in Milwaukee County Circuit Court, says Von Trier Tavern Inc. borrowed $275,000 from Heartland Financial Corp. in October 2008. The suit claims Von Trier failed to make loan payments on time, and now owes $301,936.

The loan was personally guaranteed by Von Trier owner Mark Eckert, the suit says.

Eckert said Friday night that he's in the process of selling Von Trier, but declined further comment. The tavern, 2235 N. Farwell Ave., remains open for business.

Heartland is seeking a foreclosure judgment on the tavern property, a 4,100-square-foot building that has an assessed value of $539,300. Eckert said he fell behind on loan payments because business has slowed during the recession.

Von Trier opened in 1978. It's known for its decor of stained glass windows, German beer steins and a mural over the bar. It's also known for its large selection of beers, including several imported brands.

Haven't been by there in a while, but I never would have guessed that place was even still open.

Should have sold the chandelier (sp?) for a half mil when (or was it 250k?) he had the chance.

MU_Hilltopper, is it safe to say that you were the one to introduce HKP to Von Trier?

He dragged us there a couple of times and introduced me to Hacker Pschorr.
