How are they this year..... Do we stand a chance to pull an upset???
-
Uh, yeah. They are #20 in country and this game could be ugly.
-
They are not deep, either, due to transfers, injuries and people getting kicked out. But they still have Dawson, Trice, and Valentine, as well as a couple of interchangeable 6'10 guys. No problem, mahn.

Butler just beat #5 UNC.... Rankings especially this early in the season are not very accurate of how good a team is, but Michigan State is traditionally good and Matt Carlino playing Pete Maravich basketball is probably not gonna happen night in and out...

They have a Dawson I heard he is the "Goods"....

They probably hammer us.
Personally just hoping we keep it kinda like OSU game where at lead it never gets out of control.
I'm just happy we are in winners bracket.

Michigan State, in my opinion, is ranked on reputation. They're still a tourney team, but probably in the 7-10 range rather than the top 4 lines they are used to.
Dawson is a stud, but sick. They aren't very deep either. Here's a write up I did on them for brewcityball:

Good Analysis.
We have enough talent to beat Michigan State. It will require Deonte to step up and be a factor.
-
We need a fairly similar situation to what happened vs. Georgia Tech.
We need one or two (or three!) of our shooters to go wild from 3, we need to pack it in on D and hope they don't go off from 3, we need to outscore them from the FT line and we need to play extremely hard to come up with most 50/50 balls.
Oh, and it wouldn't hurt if we could get Georgia Tech coach Gregory to replace Izzo if that was a good representation of Gregory's ability to run a team.
-
MSU is overatted at 20. That being said, they still probably crush us.

#mubb wins 72-70. They'll play Michigan St. tomorrow and 3 of the B1G's best in their first 8 games.
-
And the betting line is...?
-
Perhaps playing the Duke way could get us the win... I mean it worked for Duke.
-
Good idea. We will just use our all-world, 7'ft tall freshman center and his equally good freshman running mate to dominate the Spartans. Oh......wait........
-
We have no answer for Dawson. If he is playing well, we have little to no chance. Maybe if we get 48 from Carlino tonight...

FWIW, Dawson is sick. He missed Monday's game with illness and was limited to 3 points in 16 minutes last night.
-
A big game tonight will be needed by Deonte to pull off the upset. I think be has it in him.

MSU is favored by 13.5. The Vegas consensus line opened there and hasn't moved.

That was what I was hoping for.

If we play 2-3 zone again, Trice will probably have a field day from the outside. Unlike GT, MSU actually can shoot the ball. We will have to get those long rebounds if they miss from outside, get in transition often, and get to the charity stripe early and often (maybe make a few too).

This may be true, but they are still significantly better than MU at this point in the season. Dawson and Valentine are better than anybody we will have on the floor. One could even argue that the same is true of Trice and Costello. If MSU plays well and stays out of foul trouble, we are in for a double digit loss.
-
Dawson didn't look bad last night - I think he could have played more, but that game was a laugher.
Schilling is a very active o-reb, but doesn't get talked about much yet
Valentine does it all - very good passer at 6'5"
Trice shoots great vs weak teams, not as great vs good teams
Winnable
-
Not disagreeing. MSU is the better team and the trio of Dawson, Trice, and Valentine is as good as almost any in the country. That said, it's still our best chance at beating a ranked team in the non-conference. Especially if Dawson is less than 100%.
If they are at their best, they win. But if they aren't and we play well, keeping it close and maybe stealing one isn't impossible.

What type of guards does Mich St. have? Are they quick, slashers? Jumpshooters?

Trice & Forbes tend to pop from 3. Valentine will do a little of everything - very dangerous passer - but none of their perimeter guys draw contact on the drive. None overly athletic.
They score a lot by passing the ball.

I think this means we will go zone. With the way we gamble and seem to always be out of position on our man defense, they could shred us. Granted, they could still in a zone, but I thought we played much better defense last night in the zone.

That benefits MU then since we seem to be indefensible against quick guard play. My guess is MSU will pound the ball inside for the mismatch, trying to draw defenders in and then routinely kick it out to the open wing for a 3 - if they're not abusing MU inside. Otherwise, they'll just keep going down low. But -If MU can hold them in the paint, and lose by less than 10 -that's a victory in my book.

We need to go zone against any team that isn't crap. We are too small and we don't have few if any good man-to-man defenders. When we play a team that shoots it great from 3, we'll lose. But that's what we have to do. No defense can take away everything and I prefer to eliminate the kind of layup parade we saw against Ohio State and Omaha.

Too much Talent
Too much Height
Too much Coaching
But I'll try to focus on any improvement from last night. No matter if its inches, baby steps, minutes, anything so long as there is a positive upward trend. Not concerned with the final score, just the lessons we are learning.
