Title: Blackhawks
Post by: MarquetteFan94 on April 13, 2009, 09:17:55 AM
Wrapped up a fantastic regular season yesterday....love sweeping Detroit over the weekend.  Should be an interesting first round against Calgary...NHL's youngest team vs. a very experienced and tested team.

The UC will be a blast on Thursday night.

Go Hawks!

So does that mean hockey is tied for first as the world's most popular sport?

Couldn't be more pumped for the playoffs.  Chicago native stuck in DC here.  I'd love to see both the Hawks and Caps make runs and meet in the finals.

Hawks fan first and foremost, but the Caps are damn fun to watch.

The atmosphere at the UC has been incredible this year.  The Caps are a fun team to watch...Ovechkin is ridiculous.

Completely agreed about the UC.  Had a chance to make it to a game when I was home over Christmas break and it was a blast.  Hockey is my favorite sport to attend and it's great to see Chicago going back to it's old Blackhawks-self.  I didn't have the chance to make it to a Caps game this year as nearly all of them sold out.  Hopefully I can grab a playoff ticket somehow.

Let ME revise.....it's a tough game to understand, granted....especially if you've grown up without an NHL team to cheer for...but in terms of watching a sport in person, few (if any) sports compare to hockey.

If you're comparing the MSL (fyi, that's the pro soccer league in the US) to the NHL in terms of "US relevance"....you may be better off in throwing that Laverne and Shirley box set back in the VCR.

Hawks win 3-2 in OT!  Havlat's second goal of the night 12 seconds into OT....love it.

Awesome win.....the UC was jumpin' tonight...amazing atmosphere!

Good to see Cutler out there for the ceremonial puck drop.

NHL playoff hockey beats the crap out of spring baseball or NBA basketball. I had 1st balcony Hawk tix before having 4 kids and it was incredible. MU basketball is my favorite but a good Hawks team is a lot of fun. The UC isn't the same as the old stadium but the BC isn't the Mecca either.

I'm not a diehard hockey fan by any stretch, but there are few things more exciting in sports than sudden death playoff hockey.

Having said that, as a Chicago native, I'm THRILLED to have a reason to pay attention to the NHL again.  That was one hell of a finish by the Blackhawks tonight.

Moved out to Boston about 6 years ago, and had similar thoughts to warrior55's comments.  Started going to B's games, and they are incredible.

Sox tickets are way to expensive for the average fan, and Fenway is a dump, Pats tickets are impossible to get, and Celtics atmosphere is weak.  But Bruins games are great.

F!ck the habs!  Let's go Bruins!

When Havlat scored that OT goal, I wonder what the noise level would have been if it was at Old Chicago Stadium? Some people probably would have lost their hearing for a couple of days.

You nailed it.  Habi gave up 2 in the first....but absolutely shut them down the rest of the way.  What an incredible second period...Toews is a stud....the UC was rockin last night.

From Ditka dropping the puck to Ryan Dempster's outfit mocking Don Cherry for the 2nd intermission shoot-the-puck contest to sitting 4 seats to the left of Vince Vaughan, it was an awesome night at the UC....especially after being at Wrigley for Ramirez's walkoff in the 11th...great day.

Let's get one at the Saddledome!

I'll be at the Ducks game tomorrow hoping you are wrong.  We have given the Wings fits in the playoffs the last 2 series.....winning both series (including capturing the Cup two years ago).  Obviously we're an 8th seed so it's going to be tough, but if we win tomorrow then anything goes in a game 7 on Thursday.

Go Ducks!

I saw a stat somewhere that DET is out shotting Anaheim by almost more than 100 goals.  D has to get better if the Ducks have any chance.

Chicos, how do you like James Wisnewski?  Was a big fan of his and actually pissed we traded him for the junker Pauhlsen (sp?)

In our 11 games in the two series (San Jose and Detroit), we have been outshot in every game.  It's been crazy.  Totally relying on Hiller to save the day which eventually is a problem (shown up the last two games).  I knew yesterday we had no shot.  No energy, no emotion for the most part.  Need to get on top quickly tomorrow and hope to ride it through.  If we get down early, I suspect that will be it as I don't know if they have the legs to keep it going.  Pronger and Niedemeyer are playing too many minutes.

I like Wisnewski a lot.  The injury to him in game three I thought really hurt us in game 4 (DNP) and somewhat yesterday.  He's a load and a tough SOB.  Taking an injury like that is going to make him timid for awhile I would guess.

By the way, as someone stated, there is nothing better than in person NHL playoff hockey. Nothing.  I'm fortunate as hell to get NHL tix from the league.  I sat in front of Willie O'Ree for Thursday's game last week.  He's the Jackie Robinson of the NHL.  Unbelievable tix....I'm spoiled.

It's great to walk around on the streets and see people with the Indian head on their chest again. By the way, best jersey in sports...all time.  Just ask wayne or garth!

I can't say enough about Quenneville this year; he brought some much needed experience and confidence to a young team.  Savard just wasn't capable of bringing that in prior years.

I'll say a few hail mary's and our father's for the Ducks...but don't count on Jesus intervening duckfans.

Wow!  Absolutely incredible last night....easily one of the best sporting events I've ever attended in person.   The UC was absolutely up for grabs....that third period was amazing....6 goals scored....4 by the good guys.  Anyone who watched that game and thinks playoff hockey is not entertaining has to have the head examined.  Kane's breakaway to seal the game was ridiculous.

Also fun to see Jake Peavy cheering on the Hawks....along with Soto, Rothschild, etc.

A Wings/Hawks Western Conference Finals series would be unreal.

I couldn't believe what I had saw on my way home from the UC last night.  There are some good articles up on ESPN about how Q and bunch had to go to hand signals at the end because the crowd was so loud.

When Bufuglyn laid out to knock that puck out of the zone, and the place went nuts...i don't think i have stopped smiling!  Hell of a series!

Best part of the night was watching Luongo sit under the net making sure not to get hit by any hats or rally towels!

How about one of the Cannucks saying before this game that Hattrick Kane couldn't play 5 on 5 hockey.

I think they just blew him off last night!  His first goal he walked in from the blue line and let a wrister go!  Then the wrap around of a Turnover created by Burrish I believe.

Kane has quick hands, and he used them last night

I read people use the term upside often...well Patrick Kane has some serious upside...I'm not sure if he understand how good he can be.

The canucks were fools to talk that way...Kane is just a kid. His 1st and 3rd goals were total skill...only a handful of NHL players could have replicated those sequences.

The hawks flourish in windshield wiper hockey...back and forth...canucks should have slowed the pace (as in game 4 I beleive).

Awesome is the best word for it.  That Vancouver series was fun to watch; it seemed like the Hawks played 4-5 different teams with the different approaches Vancouver was taking to each game.

Last night was amazing.  What a roller coaster:
Down 1-0  ::).  Up 3-1  ;D.  Down 4-3   >:(.  Tied  8-).  Down   :(.  Tied  8-).  Up :D.  Up 2 ;D.  WIN  :P :D ;) ;D 8-).

Couldn't believe some of those amazing goals, particularly by Kane and Daniel Sedin.  The Burish goal was an incredible shot.

Anyone have thoughts on the possible matchup for the hawks?

Im on the fence about this one...each brings a different flavor.  Sure the blackhawks only won 2 games v Det but if you look at last year, they dominated them!

A knock on DET all year was crappy goaltending, Osgood is not young anymore!  Hiller has shown to be amazing this year in the playoffs, but Luongo was touted as one of the best...and the Hawks made him look below average!

I think the Hawks can skate with DET but it would be a better matchup with ANA because of the Home Ice.

Looks like the Hawks get another few days off, and they needed it!

Anaheim has the best road record I think of any team in the NHL.  Hiller is a stud, but Detroit better skaters.  Osgood is their weak link.

I think we (the Ducks) look tired and from that standpoint you may want the Ducks but I don't think home ice will make that much of a difference.

Anything can happen.   Hiller reminds me of Eddie Belfour 10-15 years ago, singlehandedly keeping his team in the game and possibly stealing a series.   Osgood isn't a weak link, per se, (near the top in career playoff wins and has multiple cups), but he has rarely been able to steal a series on his own.   2 goals on 28 shots, one a rebound, one a deflection, neither one weak.
Title: Re: Blackhawks

The Blackhawks made nice adjustments between games 1 and 2.  'bulin got it going and the 'hawks actually outshot Detroit for most of the game.   We can put to rest the cliche that Osgood isn't good enough.   19 shots in the first period?   Well played, but you guys couldn't break through like you needed to.   I am worried about the Wings, however.   For the last few games, they have been content to skate fast and shoot from distance.   Rarely are they setting someone up in the crease to get in the goalie's way and get rebounds and deflections.   It was how we got the series winner against the Ducks and it is how you  guys scored last night.  Detroit isn't doing it enough right now.  Holmstrom is invisible.    Hopefully, Babcock remnds them of this.

Hawks did a great job crashing the net last night...it's a shame they couldn't pull out the W in overtime.  Good adjustments...look for them to stick cleary in game 3...he's been the hawk-killer.  Hope for the best - Detroit is a well oiled machine.

Don't think the Wings have shown the Blackhawks their best game... yet.  I doubt they will advance over the Wings this year, but the Blackhawks are a very impressive young team.  Clearly the Blackhawk star is ascending.

And while I love my Wings, the Blackhawks have the best sweaters in hockey.  Unique and colorful, yet tasteful at the same time.

No, they just know their hockey.  Ducks, at the end of the year, were one of the top teams in the NHL plus the Ducks give the Wings absolute fits (as we did this year again).  That's why they were fearful of the Ducks.  Remember, they are one year removed from being the Stanley Cup champions and went to the finals twice in this decade (losing in game 7 to the Devils a few years ago).  The Ducks have had a LOT more success then the Hawks in the last decade.  In fact, since 2003, only ONE team has a better record then the Ducks....the Wings.

Sammy filled a huge gap for us since we acquired him.  He is doing exactly what is expected of him.  Hockey is a more intricate game than just scoring.

The assist on the game winner on Friday and the goal on Friday are icing on the cake.

My prediction of the Wings in 5 is looking pretty good right now and it's only 12 minutes into the 2nd period of game 4.  What a route in this game so far.

And I quote Mike Ditka, "Losers live in the past."  As a hawks fans and a realist...I am more concerned about the future than the past...and the hawks have one hell of a future in front of them.  Ducks and wings...not so much.

The kids on the hawks are gaining great experience and the Stanley Cup will return to the Chi a few times in the next decade.  Former owner, Bill Wirtz, tried his damnedest to destroy the franchise.  New manager, Dale Talon, has worked wonders for the franchise.  The hawks have moved to the top of the NHL much quicker than anyone thought...including I.

The fate of the duck and wing is no different than the states they reside in...bleak.  Go hawks!

I made the  'wings in 5' prediction while we were still playing the ducks.    Anyway, no Datsyuk or Lidstrom and Detroit squeaked it out anyway.   Chicago is still a couple of years away.   They just need to stay together and maybe find one more veteran with his name already on the cup to guide them to the promised land.

Wondering how a 6-1 game qualifies as "squeaked it out anyway?" Or are you just being polite?

Great players will always want to play for the Wings as much as I hate to say that.  As for the Ducks, they have a wonderful organization they have built in only 15 years....two Cup visits, one title, only one of 5 other teams to go to the playoffs 4 straight years.  They're long in the tooth in some areas but have one of the best lines in the NHL and a fantastic goalie.  I like our future as well as many NHL players don't mine coming down to live near the beach and Disneyland to play professional hockey.

'squeaked it out' = irony.   The Hawks are a good young team.   The Red Wings are a machine.   It used to be they just bought the best team.   Now with the salary cap, they are identifying and locking their stars up early.   They are trying to win with the all of the talent in front of an adequate goaltender.  Osgood is only making $1.2 mil this year, a relative bargain.   And because of the way the Wings scout and develop players, you have unknowns like Helm, Hudler making contributions.    On a related note, I loved seeing Chelios out there yesterday in a conference final against Chicago.

Tower912, concur completely.

Credit to Ken Holland for identifying that talent. (And thanks to Mr. Ilitch for his support, that extends to the Tigers, too.)

I had an "uh oh" moment yesterday when they announced Lidstrom wouldn't play, on top of Datsyuk and Draper being out.  Then quickly realized that with the Wings' depth, it probably wouldn't matter. As Rosenberg wrote in the Freep:  When the Red Wings' stars are injured, they turn to ... other stars.

Blackhawks are a talented team and it will be fun to watch how they develop over the next few seasons.  Though yesterday they were defeated as much by their own emotions as by the Wings.  And if you want to talk irony... Probert dropping the opening puck.

I hate Chelios more than any other hockey player out there.  He was absolutely abused in the Ducks series.  He is a liability, a punk, etc.  Sorry, I know too much about this guy from behind the scenes and he is just a complete #$^*$@.

Not much of a future in front of them eh?  This year marks the 18th straight season that they made the playoffs, and this year will mark the 6th Stanley cup appearance in 14 seasons. While that is all a testament to their recent history, what sort of ways do you see the Wings trending away from this streak?  You might say we are old, but this post season should be a great testament to just how ridiculously deep our team is, and the youth from some of the lower lines is undeniable.  Obviously a stanley cup winning season should never be taken for granted, but with the Wings ability to sign undervalued talent and keep good vets that are willing to take pay cuts throughout their careers, it's easy to see the wings competing for a long time to come.

The 'future' of the Blackhawks is trying to catch the Red Wings.    There are few guarantees in life or sports, but it is safe to assume that Detroit is going to keep finding obscure talent and developing it.   An uphill slog at best for Chicago.

Well played, Blackhawks.   No predictions about the finals.   I think Detroit wins, but I am not confident enough to wager large sums.

I am hoping the experience from last year is what puts the Pens on top this time.  While they don't have as many scoring options as the Wings (No one does.), the Penguins can threaten with all 4 lines and I would give the slight edge to Fleury over Osgood.  Ultimately I think it comes down to who makes the fewest neutral zone mistakes, as both teams can absolutely kill you by capitalizing on those mistakes.

Pens in 7.  (On an OT winner from Crosby.)  ;)

Agree with all the above....fantastic season for the Hawks.  I'll be pulling for Detroit, should be a great rematch.

I'll be at game 4 in Pittsburgh but I'll be cheering on the Penguins big time!
