Crean's MU salary
Written by: Don Walker
Tom Crean, the former men's basketball coach at Marquette University, earned $1.85 million in the fiscal year ending June 30, 2007, by far the highest paid faculty member at the school.
Crean's total pay for that fiscal year also included an $8,788 contribution to an employee benefit and deferred compensation plan, according to a federal tax filing made public by the university.
Crean's Marquette salary easily placed him in the top ranks of men's college basketball coaches around the country. Crean's salary for the most recent fiscal year has not been released.
Last month, Memphis head coach John Calipari signed a new five-year deal in which he will earn $2.35 million annually. Bill Self, the head coach of the national champion Kansas Jayhawks, has a salary estimated at between $2 million and $3.5 million.
In the previous fiscal year ending June 30, 2006, Crean was paid $1.54 million. In addition, he was given a $31,528 contribution to an employee benefit and deferred compensation plan.
In 2006, Crean signed a contract extension with Marquette that was to keep him in Milwaukee through the 2016-'17 season.
Crean left the school after the season to go to Indiana University, where he signed an eight-year, $18 million deal. Under the terms of his Indiana deal, Crean will earn $2 million in his first year in Bloomington. The annual figure increases every year through his eighth and final season, when he'll earn $2.56 million.
Indiana also agreed to pay $650,000 to buy out Crean's Marquette contract.
Crean's Marquette salary was far higher than the second highest paid faculty member at the school. The second highest-paid faculty member is David L. Shrock, the former dean of the College of Business Administration. Shrock was paid $241,600.
Terri L. Mitchell, head coach of the women's basketball team, was paid $242,117 in the fiscal year ending June 30, 2007. In addition to her salary, a contribution of $5,962 was made to Mitchell's employee benefit and deferred compensation plan.

Dollar for dollar, maybe we should have given Coach Mitchell the job.

Only 650K for the buyout. Wow.

Crean had MU by the balls, no doubt
-
MU gave the departed a license to steal. Do these numbers reflect Jack's salary also?
-
Something seems wrong to be getting that kind of a salary and have such a relatively low buy out. Where did Cords fit into this arrangement? Was he TT's agent?

Maybe the better question is where was our General Counsel on this....oh wait, nevermind.
In all seriousness, I'm sure Crean said he wasn't going to sign any extension without a lower buyout and MU probably caved to that demand. Crean was in an advantageous position with the last contract extension, and he exercised that power in that area. On the flip side, in nearly everyone I have spoken to, I sincerely believe MU officials had no inclination he was going to leave so they didn't push that area that hard....they thought he was here for much longer and that the amount wasn't an issue for a buyout.

Uhhh
1) Does the head basketball coach really count as a faculty member?
2) If so, doesn't that make Terri the 2nd highest paid?

Don't get me wrong. I'm very glad that Tan Tommy is gone. His self-centered approach, recruiting and coaching galled me. Is Buzz the right man? I sure hope so, but regardless good riddance to Tan Tommy. I do have some concern about SC being in the position he is in. SC may have been very fortunate that Buzz was available.

maybe we should call him Green Tom vs Tan Tom.

Some of those professors have other streams of income (being on corporate boards and such). I'd be interested in knowing if any of them actually made more than TC. I have a hard time believing some people on this board would be the heighest paid faculty member at MU with our current salaries.

That would be quite a stream. I doubt it. Even big time corporate board memberships aren't going to yield 7 figures.

Who on this board are you referring to?

What about Schrock? Couldn't lead his way out of a paper bag! What a joke

Superbar????

Gee, I guess that means Tom netted $2 million for 2008. That makes Buzz quite the bargain.
It's ashame the University decided to go bargain basement instead of offering top shelf money to a qualified candidate.
