In retrospect, Marquette could have absolutely kept the Warriors nickname and simply removed all connections and imagery to Native Americans.  The Golden State Warriors did so in the late-60's, and there is little-to-no demands to change their name.  But, what is done is done.  The name is gone and is never coming back.

In 2046, Golden Eagles will have been around longer than Warriors (and many of those that associate Marquette with Warriors will have passed on).

If I recall way back in the early 90s there was a choice of keeping Warriors but with a change to a mascot that looked identical to The Ultimate Warrior from the WWE rather than a Native American.
They could have gone with the Joan of Arc Warrior angle also.

As you said, this is way past spilled milk at this point.

I don't have the backstory, but did TC really push for the Gold nickname?  That whole saga still confuses me.  Anyone able to provide a brief recap?  I remember Wade on ESPN looking absolutely dumbfounded when he was told about it and said "he needed to make some calls".
